it's an anthology, every season is about something different, but generally you have a midwest small town, some cops, some criminals and some normal people ruining their lives
it's partially a crime drama, partially dark comedy with few occasional surreal elements and its main motives are truth and stories
i highly recommend the first three seasons, season 4 was meh

Amazon did such a shit job at advertising they even had a streaming service at the time, let a lone a show on Prime. IIRC They Boys was the first thing they really pushed. Like I said S1 is my favorite thing ever. I love the dark humor and depression the show has. Pretty much every character is flushed out and has some kind of arc or pay off and people are never exactly who they seem at first.

I felt like season 3 got back to the creepy feeling of season 1 and the bond between two people in the true detectives. The ending felt unfulfilling and I would compare it to a SVU conclusion. But otherwise it built up well. It lacks the actions but had the tone of s1.
I’d recommend it.

Two is about how corruption and rot can flow through an entire city and it's politicians/powerful elites and how they operate to shutdown any meaningful attempts to stop or expose them
Three is about how not every crime against children is some grand conspiracy. Sometimes it's just one or two wackjobs doing wackjob things. It's a subversion of the other two seasons. It was just the rich mans wife wanted a kid but couldn't have her own, so she had her simp husband snatch one. No grand conspiracy, just a wackjob family
