At that point in the story, the main character hadn’t completed his arch, which was to grow some balls and use violence for n self defense. This wasn’t the fricking Iliad anon, it was written by Stephen Kings son who makes slightly improved versions of his dads stories by removing all the fricking cringe humor.

When I watched it all I felt was the need to keep her safe. If you don't have a paternal instinct you are a broken man and need to reevaluate your decisions.

I think he gets off on them being naughty. He just likes punishing them. Maybe that's why they had the girl who said daddy all the time get spanked so hard in the film so you could feel a connection with the killer's desire to punish for sexual reasons.
Movie alludes to the grabber being sexually abused as a child, also alludes to him being a "naughty boy" by explicitly mentioning him spending lots of time in the basement since he was a kid (he makes a mention of the phone not working as long as he can remember since he was a kid). He punishes children for being naughty the same way his dad punished, without the sexual abuse of course
so they were alluding to the fact that the girl would grow up to like BDSM. I knew it.
