Animated sitcoms work because no one ever gets older. The kids stay kids and the hip 20 somethings remain hip 20 somethings.

Live sitcoms almost totally change their outlook and feel when the actors start aging out of their character role. The happy family sitcom works for about 4-5 years until the kids grow up and then they are awkward teens and high school graduates still hanging around at home. Workplace comedies also have a good 3ish years before it gets weird how they are all in the same positions and getting older.

They are not exactly related fields. Same reason people who take years of their lives to learn how to build boats is not going to just start making airplanes instead despite there being more money in selling planes. It's not in their personal interest or their education at all to do that. They don't want to do that.

Animation to live action is not the natural progression. People working in industries for a long time and moving onto other industries is what is natural (especially if you get forced to move on via getting fired or your job getting eliminated).

It's not. Satoshi Kon was one of the greatest directors of all time and adamantly refused to do any live action. He had the chops, he had the reputation and he had the offers but he refused because he preferred to work in animation. Live action does not validate animation.

Also, Tom doesn't seem like a guy who really cares that much about getting more and more famous. The man sang in a jazz band for years at the peak of his popularity without even trying to plug it to his fans until people started asking him about it. It's actually really refreshing to see.

Voice acting seems to have a better work-life balance than a lot of other paths in show business, so I can't fault someone for taking a pay cut for a more comfortable work environment. And let's be real here "paid less than Simpsons and Family Guy" is a pretty broad statement that could apply to most VAs, because the Simpsons and Family Guy actors are some of the highest paid in the business. It's hardly a mark of failure if you're not pulling in that sort of money.

        Anonymous

Yeah, Tom Kenny was never going to be a Hollywood leading man. He would have been a character actor. Voice work was a good move for him and he can still actually go out in public and go to restaurants, bars, concerts, beaches, theme parks, etc, without getting absolutely mobbed like an A-list live action celebrity would.
People wonder why celebrities get into such depraved shit, but when you think about it, they can’t do much without having idiot fans constantly hounding them. Might as well build a fricking huge house that is big enough to not feel like a cage, do tons of drugs, and get into increasingly more bizarre sex acts.

Same reason people who take years of their lives to learn how to build boats is not going to just start making airplanes instead despite there being more money in selling planes. It's not in their personal interest or their education at all to do that. They don't want to do that.

Reminder that Seth MacFarlane switched up to live action and has been better than ever. Genndy chose wrong.

Really just proves how fricking moronic Avatar and One Piece fans are. All the live action attempts have been awful and anyone with 2 brain cells can see it, but only Avafart fans and Slop Piece fans have so little entegraty for their medium that they are willing to consume anything put in front of their faces.

        >Live action Avatar and One Piece end up becoming huge successes for Netflix
That’s mostly because America doesn’t value animation as an art form like Western Europe and East Asia do. Cartoons are automatically seen as a children’s thing and media doesn’t truly become art until it graduates to live action format. That’s been the case since the sixties when Peggy Charren declared war on the slapstick/sexual cartoons of the Golden Age being reran on television.

        >Live action has soul
It did before 9/11, now it’s utter crap. The Oscars don’t mean much either, just look at the embarrassing stunt John Cena pulled. It’s a total clown show where celebrities kiss their own asses and expect praise for it. Is it any wonder why ratings for it have dipped each year?

People, and Hollywood israelites do not just choose against making more money in a better field anon. That is not a conscious choice to them.

Sometimes people’s morals vastly outweigh wanting to make money. Sure Genndy could become rich by making live action films, But if they turn out to be shit like those anime adaptations. It just ruins his track record. Genndy usually has hit after hit in terms of quality. He’s not going to throw his good résumé away just to receive praise from the Hollywood elite. That alone makes him more respectable than so called “animators” like Seth Macfarlane who stopped caring about good animation once FOX offered him a job.

      I finished watching netflix ATLA
      overall I'd say it's decent
I don't expect same story to be told exact same way so changes are expected
when you deviate from something like atla, which has both things that were done well and not so much, you can easily walk into a mixed bag territory
some things are better than original, some are worse
what I like are the actors, I think they all did pretty well with what they were given

The live action attempt was mediocre at best, even with Oda firmly at the helm of this thing and lauding the actors. It literally doesn't matter how good or bad the actors are because One Piece doesn't fricking work in a live-action format without significantly reducing what makes it good. The whole eight episodes felt like a shitty stage show you'd see at a theme park.

I'm fine with just reading the manga but when the reboot comes out I will obviously check it out. I never had any faith in the Netflix shit, though. The whole appeal is that it's a live-action adaptation of an anime that's not shit, and that's not enough. But at least Oda's making money off of it.
