No, the problem is what they were trying to do was stupid, Druckmann was wrong. No doctor would kill an immune person like that, without tests after tests and clinical trials.

Expecting a writer to understand the actual science behind virology is like expecting a black to not steal

one of my coworkers has been watching it and says that removing her brain was unnecessary because drawing spinal fluid would have been able to accomplish the same intended effect the doctor wanted in checking on how the spores worked in her body

is this accurate? was the brain removal unnecessary?

Yes, spinal fluid is all they would have needed. Almost all gene therapy is done through the spine

If they have sophisticated enough lab tests to determine the composition of the cerebrospinal fluid, then comparing Ellie's to a random non-immune persons would tell them if there is some chemical might confer immunity. Doing that first would also tell them if their theory about how her immunity works is right.

I mean, what you'd really want to do is find a way to grow the fungus in a culture medium; go loot every anti-fungal medication, and hell, every medication in the pharmacy, and introduce a concentration of that medication into the culture to see if any inhibit fungal growth.

Also, you'd probably want to know that you can keep a fungus from someone's brain alive in a culture medium anyway; since it'd kind of suck if you split Ellie's weird potato noggin open, pulled the fungus that made her immune out, only to have it rot like salad bar lettuce.

More generally, this is the short of shit you have to show if you want people to think the fireflies are the good guys. You need to show that there is a fungus in Ellie's brain makes her immune; that they can culture fungus taken from a human brain; that they can isolate and purify whatever factor produced by the fungus that makes Ellie immune; and they can scale up production to a significant fraction of survivors. Then and only then can you pull the utilitarian argument.

Spinal fluid sample or brain tissue biopsy, both routine procedures that were widely practiced before shit hit the fan, would be more than enough.
I still don't fully get whatever bullshit explanation they had for her immunity, but it sounded like the fungus in her brain was producing a chemical messenger that somehow neutralized infectious strains.
How they found this out in less than a day I've no idea, but if it really is the fungus inside her that's special, culturing it would be undergrad tier trivial

the second game objectively starts way too late, with us expected to like Jesse and Dina when they have no development.

I'm assuming the people who think the show is good are basing their opinion on the plot elements that are actually in that show, rather than the plot elements you wished were in that show that would make the finale's ethical dilemma morally ambiguous.

I understand the moral dilemma that druckmann is trying to set up. The problem is he sets it up in such a way that a bunch of very obvious plot holes get in the way of people actually treating it as an ambiguous situation. Yeah, the muh science explanations make for a significantly less interesting story, but it's the story as written, and it's the story as written three fricking times now by druckmann.

The issue is that in Druckmanns mind, it is not a morally ambiguous situation at all. Joel is just entirely, and objectively in the wrong. This is why he is fumbling here nonstop.

True. She straight up brutally murdered a man who killed only to defend an unconscious minor from murder.

Not at all. If killing to save your surrogate daughter is right, then so is killing to avenge your actual father. Plus Joel already murdered innocent people as a raider and so deserved to die many times over.

it doesn't matter for the story if people would have done the same thing as Joel, all that matters is that the TV audience not hate Abby to the point that they do the equivalent of intentionally getting her killed.

Craig already made the Fireflies science less moronic and Marlene more sympathetic. all he has to do now is show that Joel didn't have totally pure motives for saving Ellie and it'll be fine.

gamers are failing to recognize that the TV audience hasn't PLAYED as Joel, so we don't feel like we "own" his actions in the same way.

In the game it was 100% she was gonna die too

and it's shown as far worse because the fireflies lost a ton of people on the trip and they're desperate for anything since they're fricking guerilla larper losers

There are also a bunch of logs from the doctors suggesting they think it isn't a sureshot cure either, and cutting her brain open is just a last resort to try and figure something of value out

He says he doesn't know the cause of the immunity and that they must find a way to replicate it. I don't think the creators intended it, but they look like absolute morons.

Nevermind the "don't wake her up to ask her" or not even thinking for a second "let's keep her alive for a few months or years to study it for longer before flat out killing the only source of immunity on the planet"

People now say "but the writer said the cure was 100% gonna work" to make Joel's actions even more morally bombastic, but it's just infantile

It is spread out across a bunch of logs. They try using her blood, extracting small bits of the fugal growths from her brain to try and culture outside of her, the doctors can't isolate what is causing the immunity from any of that. Cutting her open to remove all the fungus to analyze is their last resort option that they don't even seem super confident about it.

            >trying to headcanon your way out of the trolley problem
I don’t know why everyone feels the need to do this. If Ellie dies, there’s a chance for a cure. If she lived, there isn’t.
Joel did what anyone in his position would do but obviously from a pure utilitarian perspective it’s wrong. That’s the whole point. Acting like his choice was 100% correct and had no moral ambiguity to it is moronic cope.

            >Headcanon
Its information provided directly in the game moron. Same goes for assessing the capabilities of the Fireflies to actually carry out a plan to mass produce and distribute a cure assuming they managed to develop it. The moronic cope is from Neil Druckmann who retroactively tried to turn a morally ambiguous ending into an objective one because he could never get over the majority of people disagreeing with him.

Source? According to the notes you recover Ellie is the first immune subject they’ve found. Nothing to indicate making a vaccine is impossible.

Yeah this is headcanon. The note you find starts with "i've never seen anything like this". a lot of dumb people who didn't understand the first game made up a whole backstory about other immune people.

The same log also says they have no idea what the actual cause of her immunity is

Even the smallest chance of preventing the spread of a deadly disease is worth killing one person over. Joel did the wrong thing for the right reasons. You don’t have to like it but that’s the objective truth.

The whole point is he does the wrong thing because he cares soooo much about Ellie because she's his replacement daughter and he'd do aaaanything to protect her like a mama bear. It just falls flat in the show because he's a blubbering pussy in it. He's like a male Karen compared to the game

    >fireflies have failed to make a cure over a dozen times in the past
    >fireflies lack the resources/infrastructure to mass produce and distribute a vaccine
    >most of the world lacks power grid which is required to refrigerate said vaccine so it can be stored at a safe temperature to remain effective
    >yeah bro Joel doomed the world lol
if you apply even the smallest amount of critical thinking, there is no doubt that Joel did the right thing.

None of this even matters because it's not like Joel did a statistical analysis of the viability of a vaccine and weighed the options neutrally, he was a broken, jaded old man who'd seen the absolute worst of humanity and didn't believe the world was capable of or even deserved to be saved. He didn't give a shit about the vaccine, he just wanted Ellie. That's what made the ending so interesting and why people still talk about it

There should be a third option. It is morally ambiguous in the game but you understand both sides.

I think he did the right thing, but it's not clear cut like people are saying. it was selfish too and then even worse when he lied about it.

it was bad when he lied about it and the actions werent 100% good, but I would say it was utterly selfless. Contrabandist selfish murderous Joel would be fine with Ellie's sacrifice.

But the show really made it into a creepy relationship where HE needs HER (so far as literally verbalizing it out loud, almost going "if you leave me I will kill myself" which is not only absurd it's beyond bizarre considering he's unloading his feelings to a child)

In the game it's more of a matter of "the world doesn't deserve her", it's not so much that he needs her, but that he loves her enough to feel she shouldn't go out and deserves better

That was another weird thing, they baked into the lore that the fungus zombies have a lifespan. They eventually decay to the point where they drop and become these giant spore growths. If the survivors wait it out long enough the biggest threat is over with.
