A bit slow but the movie has soul, way better than the last Ultra show.

I like that it was more emotional than comedic. The trailer did not make it justice.
Yeah, Del Toro suggestion to add the intro bit really helped. Hope this doesn't get lost in the Netflix sea and enough people watch it so we can get a sequel.
Frick you, Blazar kicked ass.
That said, I haven't watched this flick yet. I'll try to check it out tonight.
I'm afraid to dip my toes into Ultraman media. There's just so much history behind the franchise
Well, a lot of the recent ones seem like their own thing just using similar concepts.
Honestly the best thing to do is maybe get through the shorter shows to see of you enjoy it and then from there maybe try the longer media or start with some of the movies which are usually an hour and half long at most
>There's just so much history behind the franchise
They literally made this show precisely to help new people get into the franchise since it's an anniversary series meant to celebrate Ultraman as a whole. The whole thing is up for free and subbed on Shout TV
Plus you can also just watch the whole show on youtube at the moment
JUST
Mebius came out 20 year ago.
By now theres as much history post-Mebius as pre-Mebius.
>I'm too stupid to watch costume fight monster man baby show.
Just pick a series and watch it you sped.
What the frick is this shit? If you're on Cinemaphile you are fricking obligated to reject Jap shit. What's wrong with American superheroes you need to watch Power Rangers shit for Jap children?
It was cool. Now do a Kamen Rider movie next.
Bruh, we just had shin kamen rider.
I need it animated
I can’t recall if Kamen Rider ever had an anime, I know Kikaider had one and an ova I think, Ultraman has a few and that one short adapting the Demon King Jackal stuff from one of the manga’s
Ignoring the 90s SD Rider OVA and the barely animated promo stuff they've been doing since Zero-One, Kamen Rider W's sequel manga Fuuto Tantei got an anime 2 years ago
Huh didn’t know that, figured they woulda tried more anime adaptions honestly since they have done a few films retelling the first series in different gritty ways like Kamen Rider the Next or Shin Kamen Rider not to be confused with Kamen Rider Shin
And we're also getting Shin Kamen Rider as a mini series.
I kinda liked how nuanced the film is in that the villain isn’t pure evil but more misguided or blinded by their own issues and ultimately his methods are why he is the antagonist. Also this film made me feel for Emi, they really did perfect in making her cute and actually made me cry for lil bugger. I’m hoping the next film has some more kaiju or aliens from the series showup, I still want Red King to pop up to be a nasty bully to Emi, as this film’s original elements and plotline worked well as an introduction for newcomers
The paint-like colors from the classic Ultraman opening appearing in certain scenes was very cool
Watching this now (it’s absolutely phenomenal so far) and I am in awe at how well animated the baby monster is. There is a level of awkward weight during her movement that is extremely well-defined. I am beyond impressed.
That element also does a good job of making her more empathetic and they do a good job of making it easy to see why she is so frustrating for Kenji but never to the point you don’t care or stop liking the lil goober
Theres a post credit scene hinting at a sequel.
What happened?
Kenji's mom calls his watch from M78 asking for help getting home
>Father Son Spacium Beam
I’m generally surprised the previous series haven’t had that before with how many father and son Ultra’s there are…lack of onscreen Ultra-Wives is a shame to
The Ultraman manga by Shimizu and Shimoguchi did that first. Hell, that scene even made it into the Netflix anime adaptation.
Is there any kaiju or alien you would like to see in a sequel in particular?
Gomora proper and or Red King.
I think Geronimon would be great to use on a Kaiju Island setting as a villainous kaiju to contrast the human villain of this movie and also cause he's an underrated monster
So I take it that Red King doesn’t even show up as a Easter egg in the movie?
A little Easter egg at most but not to the extent of other monsters, honestly saving him for a sequel where he can be more prominent isn't a bad idea
My understanding is that the director had an original idea and that the Ultraman IP was stabled on to sell it better.
Is that reflected in the final product or what?
Only in the how Ultraman vaguely works in this movie, everything else flows pretty well.
Doesn't feel forced at all, but I guess the movie could work with other generational superheroes.
It was obvious to me, but only because I knew that beforehand. The majority of the movie could be done without an Ultraman overlay, but it doesn’t feel like a CHEAP overlay. Once they were told it was going to be part of that IP, they did a good job incorporating it into the story and adding lots of references.
Yes:

So how many kaiju/alien cameos did the movie end up having?
Bemular shows up at the beginning.
Neronga gets a fight.
Gomora, Skydon, and Baltan show up as toys.
Gomora also gets namedropped a couple of times.
Kaiju Steps is flat out is shown.
...Emi does Godzilla's Monster Zero dance.
The mech from Abaranger is there too
Guesra's on a baseball add.
>Skydon
I’ll give the movie props for remembering Skydon’s existence.
Is Kaiju Steps popular or something?Because it showed up in Rise of Ultraman too.
I don’t give a shit about Ultraman. This was pretty good though. I liked that all the main characters were adults dealing with adult problems.
Movie was stumbling a bit after the prologue, but eventually found its footing. I didn't like a lot of the dialogue either, most of it felt really stiff and not like a natural conversation between people. Despite those issues it's a fun movie that gets Ultraman well. I also like that it's family friendly but not without some sharp conflicts I winced hard when Sato accidentally broke/dislocated Emi's arm. Dr. Ondo comitting suicide by self destruct and watching his daughter's last video was so intense Love the visuals a lot and it ends on the right foot. Neat little sequel hook at the end, I'm down to see more.
>Kenjiro Sato is now basically married to Gigantron
I haven't watched the movie yet but I know that the movie was originally a scrapped Sony Animation movie only later being repurposed into being an Ultraman movie, so I'm curious how much of the original story is intact before they shoved Ultraman into it
>I know that the movie was originally a scrapped Sony Animation movie only later being repurposed into being an Ultraman movie
Interesting, you got a source for that? It would actually clear things up for me, I kept wondering throughout the whole movie why they were being so vague about Ultraman's origins, to the point where I became confused as to how their power even worked in this continuity. The idea that it wasn't meant to be Ultraman to begin with makes a lot of sense
The movie was called Yoona, it was originally just about the baby monster guy. You're not going to find a whole lot of documentation about it if you look it up online

https://shawnscottpalmer.com/sony
>The movie was called Yoona
Apparently it's first title that it had since 2001 was "Made in Japan" https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Ultraman:_Rising
Joe?
He was called Gamma Man and again, this picture was drawn in 2001 when he was a Super Sentai pastiche, 2 years before Joe came out. He's just a generic version of Battle Fever J's red ranger like most of the parodies are, including Joe.
You can tell because scarf.
Interesting to know. I guess that means this idea went through three different studios before getting made. CN probably let him keep the rights after pitching it but since Sony actually started producing the movie I imagine Netflix had to buy the rights from them just like they acquired Nimona from Blue Sky. But it still seems like Ultraman was never part of the idea until Netflix stepped in.
Ultraman wasn't apart of the movie till Netflix, but the movie was inspired by Ultraman in the first place, to be more on point. Made the shift flow well, really.
Tvtropes is already acting like the KDF in the movie are designated villains lmao
I kinda disliked the extremely basic storytelling style (show AND tell, and then tell it AGAIN very loudly just in case they didn't get it), but it was fun enough. The visual style of the human characters is pretty unappealing though, but the effects look really cool.
>show AND tell, and then tell it AGAIN very loudly just in case they didn't get it
This is supposed to be Babby's First Ultraman (US version no less). I kind of expected it to overexplain things in certain areas walking in, so maybe that's why I personally didn't mind much
Idk, "it's for kids" feels like a classic cop out. I'd say as themes have gotten more sophisticated in animated movies technically made for kids, storytelling has gotten less and less so. There may even be a straight correlation, as the more big-headed the writers and directors get about the importance of their theme or message, the less likely they are to trust their audience with it. There's nothing particularly wrong with this movie in particular, though the news coverage in the movie literally describing the different stages of the main character's arc was pretty comical ("THIS MORE MATURE SATO IS BETTER ISNT HE") ; but that sort of thing is just the standard right now. There were little bits here and there that I did like BECAUSE they were cheesy though, like picrel.
Clarity hits diminishing returns pretty fast imo, it's not something you can boost indefinitely for a proportional boost in the strength of your message. In fact, the more obvious and double-underlined your theme is, the more likely your audience is to feel preached or lectured at, rather than presented with ideas the movie trust them to process based on their own intelligence and experience.
Shows have a targeted demographic, so they obviously science down the traits to be acceptable, if they make something aimed at kids but a sizable amount of adults end up liking it suits would probably consider that a failure.
>THIS MORE MATURE SATO IS BETTER ISNT HE
That's one of the best ones, though. Baseball commentators commenting on Sato's change is really natural.
yea if you follow sports at all you'd know this is a frequent type of commentary
Seeing how the mainstream public has to watch "movie explained" videos cause they get easily distracted , I say it wasn't over explained.
>better than Blazar
Into the bin it goes
um based
This character ALMOST looked good, in a conventional kind of way and at least doesn't have angles everywhere that just don't work on an animated figure, but then there's those stupid irises on their eyes. First time they were shown on closeup on her daughter iirc I though she was a cyborg and that was a plot point or something.
I think you’re just moronic. Drop that false confidence of yours.
To be fair, you need to be capable of looking people in the eye or yourself in the mirror for that matter to realize how silly that design is.
Why didn’t she frick him
Saving that for sequel where she becomes an ultrawomen clearly
Sato’s mom will be Ultrawoman
Why have only one ultrawoman, there’s not exactly a overrepresentation in that field
Still waiting for when Shin and Rise Sr. and Jr. appear in a stage show to help Ultraman '66
