There's a throwaway line where they explain Paula adopted the baby

Why would a divorced single mom with no job adopt a baby?
Also how did she have her own giant house.

She might've adopted her with her husband shortly before they divorced.

Divorces usually take many years to go through.

she is a professor at the local college before she get fired in season 2 iirc. plus her parents lend her a ton of money.

She was an adult education teacher for creative writing. It's the kind of class working people take because they are bored. Those teachers do not make great money.

Why would a divorced single mom with no job adopt a baby?
Also how did she have her own giant house.

She probably got the house in the divorce and it was the 90's homes used to be super affordable back then. She also had a shitty job teaching creative writing. But your right why would an adoption agency give a single woman a baby?

Maybe when your parents did because they squabbled over shit endlessly. My parents were divorced within a couple of months.

The average divorce takes a long time. Even in Doctor Katz, it took two years for him to get divorced. Though they were separated during that time. It is possible to have a quick divorce but it is very uncommon.

              >black
They were some kind of Middle Eastern, I though? Melissa's grandfather sounded like an old israeli man.

Race is weird in cartoons sometimes because it's hard to tell the difference between an Indian or a middle eastern person or a light-skinned black. Like that black kid from bob's burgers who the Bulcher children hang out with sometimes, no one really knows his race. As for the grandpa, he doesn't sound israeli to me at all. He just sounds old. Anyways regardless of their specific race, it would be reasonable to assume the baby shares at least some of Millisa's family's race.

Personally, I despise the "Bill is Bobby's real father" theory, because it was literally only started because of how they promo'd the episode where Bobby asks Bill about how they got Ladybird.

I like the Bill is Bobbie's dad theory because it is a fun and interesting theory but when people act like it's canon or the truth instead of an interesting thought piece gets a little annoying. I am sure the real reason the baby is black is the showrunners just wanted to add racial diversity but didn't think about how weird it was that Joucy was black so retroactively just said she was adopted.

I have a Home Movies conspiracy theory. Okay, so Paula is divorced. She is white like her ex-husband. So why is the baby black? Brendon does say she is adopted. But if you think about it. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How could someone adopt a baby while going through a divorce? Adoption agencies are usually pretty picky especially with babies cause everyone wants babies so the agencies can afford to be pickier with who gets them.

Paula would either be going through a divorce or be freshly divorced with a lower middle-class income by the time she got Josie. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

You know what does make sense though? Paula cheating on her husband with a black man and becoming pregnant and choosing to keep the baby and this being the impetuous for the divorce. And then just lying to Brandon by telling him she was adopted. This sort of lie would make sense because who would want to burden their child with this crazy situation, plus she would want to look good in his eyes.

Now I know what you are thinking. Who is the father? Melissa's dad. He is divorced and black and they know each other. Maybe the reason both Brandon and Millisa have divorced parents is because after Melissa's mother found out about the affair and pregnancy she dumped her father.

Brendon is a young boy and is pretty naive about many things, but could he possibly miss his mother being pregnant and giving birth?

I think it's more likely it was meant as an edgy joke and they chicked out later.

She could have just told Brandon that she got fat. It's not like weight changes are uncommon in the show. Remember the episode where everyone got fat? Brendon is smart but he might not have put two and two together and it's not like Paula would have brought him to the hospital when she gave birth. That's for stepmoms.

Jokes aside I get where you are coming from but I could see Brandon just being told she got fat and lost some weight or had to go to a hospital for some reason and not really think about it super hard. And on the other hand, it would be possible for Brandon to know too. I think both possibilities are possible.

That wouldn't explain why every time Melissa's Dad hits on Paula, she turns him down as though he they never did anything. Like yeah your theory is possible but the character interactions would have reflected that better.
Paula shrugs off his flirting less like an ex-lover and more like someone who was never interested in him.

Personally I think the baby belonged to a friend of Paula's who died, and they were close enough friends Paula didn't want her baby to go through the orphanage process. I don't think Brendan's Dad ever really mentioned the Baby yeah?

Yeah, they don't really act like people with a history. I'll admit the theory isn't air-tight. Kind of like the KOTH theory. Although you could come up with justifications for the way they interact with each other. I do however like your theory that it was a friend that died. Although I think the only way this makes sense is if Paula was the godmother to the kid ahead of time.

Which certainly makes it seem like it isn't his baby.

Their race doesn't really matter or is explained. Melissa has Afro puffs. And her dad has competedly straight hair they're just drawn that way.

more to the point, who adopts a kid when they already have one?
is it like "Well i'm divorced now, but i want another kid, and it'll take too long to marry another guy, so frickit let's adopt"

I'm pretty sure that Paula wanting to adopt Josie WAS part of why they got divorced. Brendon's dad really only reconnects with him so that his new wife knows that he already had a kid; outside of that, he never seemed to particularly interested in having kids.
