Yeah, it really is garbage. It was for long a question of whether Cage's eccentricity was genuine or that of a mere poseur, now it is clear.

damn he didnt even list one of his uncle's films. He coulda given Apocalypse Now or The Conversation a shoutout

Those movies don't need shoutouts, (and neither do the ones he picked).

maybe he just wanted to say what his favorite films are and doesn't care what "needs shoutouts"

There's really no way to win here, is there? If he listed super obscure titles he's pretentious and a poseur. If he lists "safe" classics he's a poseur.

Just like on Cinemaphile. You can post your favourites list here and the same list will be called pretentious, entry-level or good by different people in the same thread.

It’s either Space Odyssey or Citizen Kane
      Definitely not Coups or Juliette
Kane feels like the odd man out to me.
I don’t know if it’s the older style but I just never liked it that much and don’t understand what the fuss is about

You don't understand what the fuss is about because all of modern cinema is built on Kane. The only way to truly grasp its profound impact is to watch a bunch of films made before.

          Anonymous

I get that. Im not standing here trying to persuade you that it’s a meaningless movie that had no impact.
But at some point I do have to take into account how watchable something is.
          Kane is a slog.

Kane is one of those movies that "media literacy" people tell everyone that they have to worship

You are as close to objectively wrong as you can get about film if you dislike Citizen Kane. It's like saying the Mona Lisa is a bad painting. You are entitled to your opinion, but nobody will respect it.

I don't dislike Citizen Kane, I'm saying it's a bad pick as a favorite movie of all time

no it's like saying i understand the mona lisa is important but i personally don't consider it my favorite painting

              Yeah but that’s the thing
You can acknowledge that the Mona Lisa is an important and foundational work without liking the actual painting that much.
              I prefer Miro and Kandinsky

Ok, I think I understand your point. Yeah, Citizen Kane probably wouldn't be in my top 4 "favorite" films, but I don't see it as pretentious if someone genuinely loves it that much. It's a very good film.

        >don’t understand what the fuss is about
It's a filmmakers favorite movie. You watch it, and it captures your imagination. It makes you want to make a movie. Anyone who is some kind of creative can't help but be transfixed by it and inspired by it
Conversely Vertigo is a critics favorite movie. It has so many levels it can be interpreted, so many lenses you can apply to it, even the most hackneyed and amateurish of critic can come up with something
The fact that the latter overcame the former as the top film in sight and sound poll was a sign of things to come in the moviemaking world. And now we are supposed to believe that Jeanne dielman is the best movie ever made
