Luke really emphasizes the bastardry problem that his family has run into. He realizes it before Jace does, asking Rhaenyra about Harwin being his dad when the Strongs go back to Harrenhall. Likewise, this early recognition and frustration at his position fuels his anger towards wounding Aemond later on. This also works to show how despite the fact that they could've all gotten along well with one another, in many ways the children inherit the malice between their parents. Luke furthers the problems that come with Rhaenyra's relationships with his insecurity to inherit Driftmark because he knows he's not actually the heir to it. Ultimately he finds the will to take on the responsibility of something he is not worthy of, even more so with his engagement to Baela, but tragically dies before he can fulfil it. Ultimately, I think Luke shows how much this war will take from both the Targaryens and the kingdoms as their strength is torn down from its peak.

Loretist here, there wasn't a real point in the show. What it should've been was a symbolic representation of the tragedy that is this civil war and wars in general. The fact that he died due to Aemond being instilled with hate based on grievances neither of them had a role in starting is sad. Even the incident with the eye was rooted in the quarrels of the parents. If family members raised under the same roof can be manipulated into killing eachother, then how easy would it be for the masses to be instilled with the same bloodlust and murderous intent for people who never did them any ill.
Lucerys was the first casualty and with him died any hope of reconciliation between the major players. The retaliations came next and with it the inevitability of war.
All this strife because of a political game of thrones, decisions made by special interests far away for their own personal gain. Houses split apart, the Kingsguard split in two for the first time and brothers who shared a room killed eachother, and for what.
This is how wars usually go, you'll be conscripted and forced to kill a random civilian conscript for reasons above your pay grade. Sometimes in civil wars you might end up being tricked into executing the baker your family used to get your loaf of bread for generations because of a political disagreement.
Lucerys' death and the events that resulted from it are to let the audience know that there's no limit to the actions which we can be conditioned to do out of hate, even kinslaying. Or at least that's how I saw it.

Loretist here, there wasn't a real point in the show. What it should've been was a symbolic representation of the tragedy that is this civil war and wars in general. The fact that he died due to Aemond being instilled with hate based on grievances neither of them had a role in starting is sad. Even the incident with the eye was rooted in the quarrels of the parents. If family members raised under the same roof can be manipulated into killing eachother, then how easy would it be for the masses to be instilled with the same bloodlust and murderous intent for people who never did them any ill.
Lucerys was the first casualty and with him died any hope of reconciliation between the major players. The retaliations came next and with it the inevitability of war.
All this strife because of a political game of thrones, decisions made by special interests far away for their own personal gain. Houses split apart, the Kingsguard split in two for the first time and brothers who shared a room killed eachother, and for what.
This is how wars usually go, you'll be conscripted and forced to kill a random civilian conscript for reasons above your pay grade. Sometimes in civil wars you might end up being tricked into executing the baker your family used to get your loaf of bread for generations because of a political disagreement.
Lucerys' death and the events that resulted from it are to let the audience know that there's no limit to the actions which we can be conditioned to do out of hate, even kinslaying. Or at least that's how I saw it.
