It's worth noting most Plats "cope" by falling into some kind of magical delusion through their khert connection or just generally living careless lives with their own people. Quigley himself is unusual in that he kind of actually gives a frick about his shitty lot, even if time and his own cowardice have blunted any real passion to do anything about it. Him not wanting to teach Matty pymary is something he's doing, or at least said he's doing, to honor Vienne's wishes and seems to largely agree: maybe if people didn't want to rely on Plats tremendous pymary potential, they might actually bother to try and fix their shitty lifespans.
Of course the plats being how they are is no doubt the intention, so good luck there buddy. Anyway, Quigley is emo causes he's actually bothering to grapple with his early death, whereas most plats just hide from it to avoid having to confront it.
