Lalo was also the only character that pushed Gus to its limit (if you don't count his death in BB), which allow us to explore a side of Gus we haven't seen before, a more fragile and human side
it is shown perfectly with Gus' last scene with the sommelier
you already saw gus's more vulnerable side when walter exploited that to kill him and he also pushed Gus to his limit. Everything you described had already been done before.

I feel like the key moments in the lalo arc were well thought out, but most things connecting them were kind of meh. the most capeshit about him imo was his behavior, like body language and speech. The fact that we got to see Mike so much made up for it
The cartel storyline was unnecessary but Lalo's performance injected some needed charisma and tension. It would have been 10x better if he was not related to the BB cartel and drug shit, so he didn't have to die.
