It being political isn't the problem, the problem is how poorly modern Star Trek implements its politics. It's all just plain badly written, when the writing used to be one of Star Trek's strongest points.
90s Star Trek used to at least consider different points of view, that was one of the best things about it. While it would usually come down on the left-leaning side of things you would get characters like Worf, O'Brien, or Quark who were comparatively conservative in certain aspects and who were very well liked by the audience. You don't get that sense of subtlety now, like you said the writing is really the cause of why trek has gone to shit.

In Star Trek: First Contact, Picard travels back in time, and ends up explaining that the philosophy of his time period is "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" which is straight from marxist ideology. I think the best example of even handed political trek is the Voyager episode were they help transport some criminals and one of them is a condemned murderer has some brain problem that makes him a psychopath that they're able to fix it and they want to get him clemency in light of his newfound empathy but ultimately the families his actions have hurt are against it. I would say Gen X is doomed universally, not just people that go down this path.
