I remember like 1999-2001 I had a fun job doing light construction and was making really good money. Rent was 400 bucks. Felt like I had life by the balls. Then I made a terrible choice to get a corporate desk job. I should stuck with the construction. Literally did a little work and just joked around all day. Went home without anything lingering, didn’t have my fricking email go off 200 times a day when only about 10 require any response from me. I shoulda listened to office space

One of my favorite examples of this is that video from the early 80s where a guy goes and talks to people at the 7/11 outside Disney World. Everyone has so much every and life (maybe they were on coke). He goes back 30 years later and the people are shifty and run down. Huge demographic changes too.

The Woodstock '99 documentary is pretty good, if just for the compilation of festival footage alone, but the commenters are so insufferable it adds a layer of unintentional comedy. The festival was extremely mismanaged as they outline, but they really go out of their way to revise history and blame "angry suburban white kids" for the bulk of the problems. My favorite is the guy who says shakes his head and says "talk about white privilege" at the cops not tear gassing the rioters, never considering that when the cops told them to disperse everyone politely left without incident. The black nerd giving a pseudo-Freudian Marxist overanalysis of why white kids would sing along with DMX is also a highlight, since it has no connection to reality whatsoever.

The "angry whites kids" theory is also immediately disproved since large festivals like Ozzfest were 100% whiter, angrier, trashier (and more based) and had none of those problems that '99 had.

That's exactly it for the HBO one. The Netflix one is more balanced but directly references buzzwords like "misogyny" and only alludes to the mismanagement while failing to examine it in any detail. Overall they blame the zeitgeist more than the organizers.

They also try to blame Durst for inciting a riot when he was really just saying the exact same rehearsed lines he does at every show during "Break Stuff." They try to do it again the RHCP for covering Hendrix's "Fire" as fires were being started, when that was already planned as the last song in their setlist.

To be honest, we tend to overfetishize happiness in this country. Maybe its because I am Gen X and therefore a fricked up boomer but my take on the festival is that it caused arguably MORE memorable performances then the original Woodstock.

People suffered through it but 99.999% survived it. Those who survived it lived through something that is entirely unique in the history of this country and only has ever been matched by Travis Scott Juiceworld or Altamont Rolling Stones. Very few people experienced a certain vibe of epic destruction like this ever or since. Think of rape and violence next to some of the most rage filled and soulful bands of all time. You could never recreate it its impossible with TikTok shit would be shut down in 4 hours tops.

Seriously its fun to go on youtube and see every performance once in your life. Even Dave Matthews Band is cool somehow. The amount of soul, performances its outrageous, Red Hot Chili Peppers best performance is there.
