Tons of people watched it - Netflix canceled it despite it's success. They claim because it was too expensive (ironic considering how much they're throwing at shows now), but I always felt it was personal. Someone high up at Netflix did it for personal or political reasons.

Hollywood has never been respectful to literature. They have always been arrogant and think they can improve on the source.
There are book series that would make insane shows, with the right budget. If you got an a director with the autism levels f Jackson, and WETA levels for CGI and props, the Oz books would make billions. They're public domain, too, so no family trust to pay off. But only if you stay true to the source. We got lucky with the Wizard of Oz as it is, if you read the books on the making of it, it was handed around like a Wiensten actress and had the most ridiculous scripts written for it, before going back to mostly the book.
But these days, I want Hollywood to keep their filthy hands off everything in the book world. God forbid they get their hands on Niven's stuff, after he kicks off, and his wife starts selling movie rights.

    >Don't they have that with Stranger Things, The Witcher, Squid Game, etc?
I think they mean a potential movie franchise that has the ability to branch off into it's own continuity and lore and by having their own expanded universe. I'm sure they could do that with the TV shows you mentioned but I don't think those shows were built for something like that. And the Witcher isn't really their own property..

But the problem is I don't think it's really up to them if they want the next Star Wars or Harry Potter the fans make that happen.

  31. 2 years ago

    Isn’t that Stranger Things?

      Anonymous

They want something which has extensive lore with the potential of millions of spin offs. Stranger things is set in the real world so there's not much potential for that. The only difference is you have demons effecting your main characters. With star wars you literally have tens of thousands of years worth of lore you can work on. Same for LOTR and GOT. Even with books set in the real world, there's enough content potentially there for decades of films and TV shows like with Harry Potter you have the entire wizardry world or with Percy Jackson you have the whole olympus thing going on. DC and marvel have hundreds of thousands of comics to pick from. There really isn't many of these types of stories left that haven't already been taken by a competitor. Now do you really think netflix has the potential to make anything near what they want? They're only good at singular unique stories and don't have the creative potential for this. We're talking about the most successful stories out of the tens of thousands of failures that tried do the same thing in the past century. Sure it's possible but they'll probably have a lot of flops to go through before an eventual W.

Well they did make some Witcher spinoffs already, the problem is they're fricking garbage. Netflix produces almost nothing but shit and hires almost nothing but hacks (like the old hag they gave Witcher to for some fricking reason). All their shows are pozzed. Another issue with the Witcher is a lot of people expected the Witcher 3 game on screen - but they can't touch any of that. So they had to start over, in terms of costumes, props, etc. And they put the least amount of effort into it that they could.
I noped out before it even premiered, because of the casting, but the few scenes I've seen, they didn't even try.

I'd say HP is still massive, it's the SW/LOTR of gen Z.
I do agree it took a hit with these piece of shit Beast movies, but SW and LOTR are both getting railed so much harder ("You have not seen... what I've seen"). I don't even know why israeliteflix would bother to emulate SW at this point.
tbh they had Cowboy Bebop on their hands to build a whole fricking universe around it eventually, but they just couldn't fricking resist, as I already stated. It could've been massive given time.
Same thing with Witcher, but of course, of course. Let's turn that intersectional feminism up to mother fricking 11 in a franchise targeting (teenage) boys and manchildren. Let's piss off all the existing fans we paid for by acquiring the IP as well while we're at it.
Crapflix will never achieve anything greater than Stranger Things until they completely ditch their garbage "the mEsSaGe is more important than entertainment" mentality.
