Obviously this guy is a moron if you take it at face value, but if you look at this specifically through the action genre then it’s obviously true. There have been so many feminist power fantasies and chick flicks disguised as action movies that the men who are the primary audiences for these types of movies have no interest in seeing them. Women don’t line up in droves to watch action movies by themselves or with other women, anybody saying otherwise is suffering from ideological brain rot.

Actors are generally athletic men. Actresses are generally unathletic women. The last MI movie was the perfect example. Even when the stunts are real, the female actress is fricking awful and clumsy as she scrambled around trying to keep up with Cruise who has made it his profession to do the stunt exceptionally. Compare that to the last Fast and Furious movie. Theron and Rodriguez are two of the best female actress stunt performers. Earned through hard work. Fast is filled with CGI, but the girl fight was kino because they fricking earned it.

Compare that to this version of Furiousa. Filled with CGI and a girl who is so unathletic you can't stand to watch her for more than 5 minutes play boy games.

Especially Rodriguez consistently delivers solid action scenes, always confused me because she has no MMA background.

      > Women don’t line up in droves to watch action movies by themselves or with other women,

Agreed. There was a blogger by the name of Roush or something I can’t recall his name, he was the lead writer for the now defunct Return of the Kings webpage, anyway he would always talk about how feminists have to realize before they invest money in women only spaces is the fact that women go to where men go. He said that will never change. He was right about that.

If you were an actor or actress in the film getting points off the back-end, that's exactly what the studio would tell you when you had the temerity to ask for a check. The guys with stellar agents, like RDJ, get points off the gross for that very reason.

I'm not wholly anti-union but Hollywood unions are basically ripping production budgets asunder. You want to get a couch for a scene? You'd better pay the union rate for it. No you're not allowed to make a couch yourself or use someone's couch that they were willing to lend, that might put the couch guys out of the job.

      >It’s more along the lines of the economy being shit and people being willing to wait the 2-3 months for it to hit streaming. The theater was probably the first thing people cut from their budgets along with restaurants.

You're not wrong necessarily, but Dune 2 did well in theaters and didn't have this problem.

Dune 2 had much heavier star power than Furiosa, followed up a successful first movie, and is generally sterile and bereft of the source material's stranger qualities that would make it alienating for viewers. The story and setting are stripped down to such a point where they're digestible for mass consumption. Something like Furiosa is really weird and offputting to most general audiences by comparison. It presents a ridiculous world with ridiculous characters, presumably confusing audiences when the movie wants them to take those things seriously

I'm late to the thread but:
    >people are sick of female protagonists
    is just
    >people didn't see this female led movie because they hate women!
Equally moronic and is refuted the same way:
People are sick of bad writing. Nobody spergs about Ellen Ripley, or Sarah Connor. That's because they are well-written, likeable, and give the audience a reason to care about their stories. Shit, I've actually heard nothing but good things about "Prey" from the few people who actually watched it. Maybe if people weren't primed to expect trash, it would have done better.
Sarah Connor is actually an excellent example because people loved T2 but hated Dark Fate. Literally the same character, in the lead role, but one movie was good and the other was bad.
Furiosa flopped, presumably, because it's a trash movie, and people can't be shamed into watching trash by being accused of being sexist. Similarly, this does not mean people actually are sexist when they don't watch trash.

A lot of bad movies make money. A lot of early MCU was mediocre to bad yet it made money. A lot of shitty comedies make money. Average normalgay doesn't care for actually quality writing.
Also I saw Furiosa and it was okay. Nothing particularly egregious in the script that could turn people away.

I agree, lots of mediocre movies make good money. Usually those movies have some sort of charm to make up for being mediocre. That is to say, if your movie sucks but people will like it, you don't need to resort to idpol to shill it.

          >Usually those movies have some sort of charm to make up for being mediocre
that "charm" is the secret formula of men behaving in masculine roles and women behaving in feminine roles without any real deviation. trivializing the dichotomy that is at the literal foundation of our species appeals to the dwindling percentage of the population still invested in a cultural revolution, but everyone else learned to tune this shit out.

Furiosa is actually pretty decent, but I think the character of Furiosa just isn't a selling point for most people.
Coupled with the fact that Hollywood has been shitting out consistent fricking trash for over 10 years at this point, people just aren't willing to take the risk and pay for it. At this point Hollywood has tainted "strong female action lead" characters far too much that more people are willing to write them off immediately now.

Because they fully control those and can decide what's popular and what isn't. It doesn't matter if nobody is actually watching it, it's very easy to just add 1 mil views to the counter every day, just takes the press of a button. If you want to be a little less brazen, there's another billion ways to cheat it:
      >put it on the front page of the app to ensure the most misclicks
      >count any amount of time spent watching it as a viewer (misclicked and watched 100ms of it? that's an extra viewer)
      >put it on auto-play to catch those that start the app and then go take a piss
      >raise the odds of it being the next thing played once the one you're watching ends
All of these will easily add up to ensure millions of views one way or the other.

Cinemas on the other hand are much harder to manipulate, even just paying them off to say it's a huge success or buying tickets yourself is much more onerous.

I don’t think it has anything to with it being a female protagonist though I do think an old Max movie with Mel would perform better. It’s more along the lines of the economy being shit and people being willing to wait the 2-3 months for it to hit streaming. The theater was probably the first thing people cut from their budgets along with restaurants.

Yes, and actually WOMEN went to see it with all their friends. You should be mad at all the women that avoid movies like Furiosa like the plague. Women dont like these kind of movies in general and dont care if a stronk wimmin is the leading character. Is this something Hollywood is too dense to understand? Men, want manly men in leading roles to self insert themselves into. Ok, Furiosa has at least the heroes journey and she is not a Mary Sue BUT why arent those progressive females flooding the movie theaters and plant their butts in those expensive movie seats? Because they are grossed out by a movie like Furiousa. They sure celebrate it as a win in the culture but thats it.

Movies are basically over. You need a big grassroots push, smaller budgets, and some kind of meme factor to make money. Dune, GxK, and I think Kingdom of the Apes were all notably successful. None of them got within what big movies were making pre-covid. Coupled with inflation, the results are not looking good. Yes the money is fake and the economy is fake, no it does not go indefinitely. Debts build and then things collapse for people. Movies like Furiosa or The Fall Guy would have at least made their budgets for production and advertising back before 2020.

Also because of inflation - no one wants to fricking go to the movies anymore. Any man in a relationship isn't going to blow his cash on films when he could get food for his stupid prostitute gf who needs him to entertain her childlike brain by spending money on her. At least then he can feed himself. Frick doing movie dates in 2024.

It was an ok flick; like in Fury Road, the stunt work, cinematography, set pieces etc are all top notch on top of doing some really cool world building... HOWEVER, whereas Fury Road was a great film, as I said this movie was just "ok". The pacing feels weird, and even though the movie is 2 and a half hours it still falls into the trap of trying to cram too much into that time frame. Unironically, if this was a TV mini series of say... 7 episodes, with each lasting like an hour and 10 minutes, I would argue it would have been fantastic. Then there is the obvious problem that even though Furiosa is cool, he is not Max. And a Mad Max flick without Max is like a cheese burger without cheese. In the end, I had fun and I think I got my money's worth. But am I excited to see this movie again? Naah, I'll watch Fury Road instead.

All in all, what these old directors and Hollywood in general seem to forget (besides actual talent) is that the format of your story matters, I can name countless films that are mediocre or even outright shit, simply because they would work infinitely better as TV shows.

Hollywood is notorious for using creative accounting to reduce tax bills. Inflating the cost of a movie while reducing the revenue.

They marketed it as a spin-off. That's a massive risk. At best, it won't surpass a main entry, at worst, people ignore it cause they think it's unnecessary and/or lower budget.
