I'll play the devil's advocate here: For me, it was Margaret.
Mordecai was simply not enough of a man to handle CJ. Her destructive outbursts and emotional stability should also be a net negative for any other man. But she still had more "character" and compatibility with Mordecai than Margaret, so I also understand CJgays.
While I acknowledge Margaret was bland, that's because she was introduced as a mere overarching plot element in the guise of a character rather than an actual character and had to be slowly and subtly built as the show matured. Still, she was a nice girl and her adaptability would've made both Mordecai and her happy. She and Mordecai were, figuratively and literally, built for each other.
You know I thought it was kind of fricked how CJ got mad at Margaret for lying about having a boyfriend but it was clear she was trying to deescalate a potential deadly situation that CJ put her in. Like CJ is a better girlfriend for Mordecai but I thought it was weird how people just look over her temper.
She was able to control her temper over time. CJ not just fricking killing Mordecai for the shit he pulled at MM's wedding is testament to that.
Anyway as for question CJ I suppose. As mentioned Margaret is boring as frick and had a thousand boyfriends. Besides, gotta find out how CJ's blowjobs are.

I don't really think CJ is that much more interesting honestly. Margaret at least had clear goals (a job, school, a dream career she's working towards) whereas CJ didn't have much going on. Hell CJ doesn't even seem to have her own friends she had to take over hanging out with Eileen when Margaret left.
Now CJ did have more chemistry with Mordecai than Margaret so she made the better girlfriend - I just don't agree with the Margaret hate.

CJ got involved, stood out more with her flaws and personality, and as said had more chemistry with the group. Most of Mordecai's relationship drama was because he was fundamentally unable to resolve his feelings towards Margaret and dragged them into his relationship with CJ. His lowest moment was him saying he still had feelings for her at MM's wedding.
