Even original Shogun was somewhat respectful to the Japanese. Chinatown, authentically, treated the chinese like trash. Any netflix slop will 100% make the Chinese characters powerful masterminds.
The original Chinatown takes place in 1937, which means a prequel set say a decade earlier would put it right at the tail end of the Tong Wars. A realistic adaptation of those years with the Tongs clashing with the LAPD and all kinds of rival gangs would genuinely lend itself to having more than a few masterminds running around. It was a very exciting and chaotic time and place to be around by all accounts

Fincher is hands down the biggest brainlet, overrated, director working.
He's good if he's working with a good script, but he often doesn't and absolutely can't salvage bad material.
