Though it aired in mostly the 90s Seinfeld even had an Abortion episode, an episode about gayness being fine. The only reason it felt less woke back then is because of the lack of widespread use of the internet and social media

I think that episode may have gone over your head

          Anonymous

No, the episode went over your head. It was the perfect take to make conversations of gayness tolerable to the general public. Because there were so many barriers of insecurity back then. The joke allowed one to proclaim they're not gay, while simultaneously proclaim they're not against gays either. In the 90s, everyone was pushing for "tolerance". And that's what the joke allowed for. Tolerance of gays. Nowadays, everything is about "acceptance", which is the next step after tolerance. It was actually a brilliant stepping stone in social acceptance. Because it was a step that everyone was glad to make.

Were the '80s this woke? Asking for a fren.

I'm no 80s kid. I was born in 86. But I wasn't even a conscious person until like 1990. So I consider myself a 90s kid. And yes, the 90s were woke. You guys just weren't privy to what was going on back then. Ask yourself why every 90s children's show had a mix raced cast, and at least one disabled kid.
Sitcoms were addressing issues of homosexuality and even trannies. Which they called "transvestites" back then.
Rupaul found his fame in the 90s. His late surge of popularity in the 2010s was a *return*, not a start.

But also, when I was about 6-8 years old, I knew a black kid who was super into Star Trek The Next Generation. That was what he was known for. Liking Star Trek. We all thought he was weird. Nice. But strange for liking such a show. In retrospect, he was smart as frick. Got straight As in school too. He was a classic smart nerd.

But kid-me was being a hypocrite. Because I was a black nerd too. I just didn't realize it at the time. Because I liked playing outside like all the normal kids did. But my household was also really into video games. And we would invite the other neighborhood kids over to play video games. Since our neighborhood was mixed, we had a the older black kid who was good at everything. He didn't own any games, but he could beat all of them somehow. The ginger girl would bring Kickle Cubicle(NES game), the white boy would bring Legend of Zelda. We had a Korean girl who just spectated. And while my sister wasn't too much into video games, she would still hang out sometimes, along with her blonde friend.
So you might have a room filled with: black, asian, white, and we're pretty sure the Star Trek kid was gay. Nothing is guaranteed at such a young age, but he had a swishy way about him. Oh, and my mom babysat a disabled kid too. So she was there sometimes.

So yeah, on one hand, the media was absolutely woke back then. But on the other hand, it wasn't that far off from the realities of my life.

I think largely it's presentation. This was always present even in old Star Trek had "woke" shit. I think the difference now depending on your definition or tolerance of "woke" is that older shows and movies didn't make it the narrative of the product. You had the Cosby's but every episode wasn't "this is what it means to be black in America" kind of unlike Blackish where most episodes are framed around Dre making sure his kids have some kind of "black" identity or knowing their roots, or old Power Man or hero for Hire comics vs Netflix's Luke Cage that has him sitting in a barber shop for a quarter of an episode giving a lecture to some punk about Marcus Garvey. So many shows and movies now, this being my definition of woke, forget about or betray character or story progression to preach about some social issue that's taking place right now in a one to one context. Making the show kinda shit. Because they do very little to make the show enjoyable. Because it seems that between making a quality show and pushing an agenda the latter dominates most of the time. Once again with Luke Cage whose signature look is a yellow shirt gets replaced by a black hoodie the entire first season.

You're right that the concepts have always been there but the execution, now, is extremely different. And I think the intent now, is extremely different.

But that's not Stranger Things. There's hardly any lecturing. Even the lesbian just hangs out with Steve and they bond over chicks.

Yea but, that's me, my definition. So I guess I would agree. The show isn't that woke to me but I'm not inclined to force my guidelines on others though. In reference to the original post it's more about the actual 80's vs the show and to that, considering they're in some small out of the way town, not that you can speak for one hundred percent of people but their attitudes towards a lot of stuff seems fairly liberal. In a not that no one would accept some of this but the lack of just casual intolerance in the background is weird in comparison. Even the shit this season with DnD,witchcrafts, cult shit is neutered into just calling them freaks. Bullying is really toned down. It's not the focus of the show to me so I don't care that much and didn't give it much thought but no the actual 80's weren't that woke. And it's not they'd drag the lesbian out into the streets and stone her or anything but just like even Steve doesn't casually say dyke while still being her friend because who cares?

You guys were just ignorant to the back door decisions. But people who saw it for what it was called it out. They recognized it "tokenism". A lot of black characters got their roles, because some meddling executives thought "we need a black guy". Or they thought, "black guy / white guy buddy movies would be funny. Two different people from two different worlds." They didn't just write a generic buddy film, and then by happenstance cast black guy for the role because he was the best performer. No, they knew they wanted a black guy from the jump.

I think once Bruce Jenner trooned out (which, mind you, had been speculated for years prior), that's when you started to see a bunch of the modern nonsense associated with trannies. Before then, it was just crossdressers like Ru Paul, and like the only transgender person you would maybe occasionally hear about was Chaz Bono.

I don't remember there being such language police about trannies until 2014. The whole "trans women are women" and having to call them proper pronouns is a relatively new phenomenon. There have been trans people for a long time, but we used to be able to acknowledge that a chick has a dick and is a dude.

But it was one of those Maury/ Ricki Lake/ Oprah kind of shows. In the episode, some homophobes are being confronted by gay people. And they're calling the gay people "gays", and the host is asking how does that make the them feel. And the homophobe is unrepentant. And the gay guy is expressing how much it hurts him.

Here, you can easily find video of old shows featuring drag queens and trannies back then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjg8tVfrxhs

There was pride shit and talks about acceptence (not rights) etc but I remember them getting pelted by eggs and stuff. Nobody gave a shit.
Also funny that back then they often cited the slippery slope fallacy when conservatives said that it will all lead to further degeneracy. That has not aged very well.

              Anonymous

You still put too much importance on 2014. We were already talking about gay rights before that point. And "pride shit" was discussed in the mainstream. Some egging incident doesn't change the cultural shift that was happening.

By the late 90s / early 00s, you could listen to Howard Stern talk to George Takai about his sexual exploits, and then switch to Loveline where they would give advance to gay callers, then catch an episode of Queer eye for the straight guy, before catching a rerun of that episode where Homer learns to accept a gay man.

But to hear you tell it, in 2014, someone at tumblr suddenly flicked a switch and everyone was magically accepting of gays.

Reaganite conservatism was the cultural backlash, it began in the 70's as a response to the riots/drug deaths/general social termoil of the hippie era and was in full swing by the 80's.

Being a leftist in the 80's was like being a conservative under obama.

Obviously they weren't, the 80s were nothing like Stranger Things.

The 90s were not that woke but the thing was not to care what other people got up to.

Post 9/11 there was a sort of conservative backlash in terms of interfering and then woke is a backlash to that, which is progressive politics with interfering. 90s were the best really.

      >Obviously they weren't, the 80s were nothing like Stranger Things.

Could have been worse. It's like a snapshot of the '80s filtered by the selected culture which survived from it it due to being protected by boomers. And as someone who was fully alive during the '80s I can say that as snapshots go it's not bad for something which isn't actually from the era. But sometimes it's really, inevitably, achingly modern despite insisting that we're watching a retro show, and honestly the thing which gives it away the most is that it's so incredibly derivative to the point of outright unapologetic theft.

D&D was popular in the late 70s/early 80s and then died down by the mid-80s. The Satanic Panic about D&D was fairly early on and the mid-80s Satanic Panic was actually about pedophiles in daycares.
Funnily enough, if Stranger Things went on another year or two than Lucas' sister's friend group would be playing TMNT&Other Strangeness, which completely supplanted D&D for the middle school crowd due to the comic being cool and ninja turtles being ok with born-agains.

D&D was always nerd shit for guys with acne and greasy hair that listened to Rush. It was like that in the mid to late '80s too. The only thing that really replaced it was Magic: The Gathering cards around 1992 or so. That was huge. Middle school and high school girls weren't into TMNT. Not sure what you are basing that on.

Satanic Panic was pretty big all through the '80s and lasted up until the '90s (watch Paradise Lost about the West Memphis Three. That was def Satanic Panic in the '90s) There was also the Marilyn Manson panic in the mid to late '90s. I definitely remember parents not letting kids listen to Motley Crue in the mid to late 80s because they were "satanic." I also remember there was a panic about subliminal messages in records all through the '80s.

I'm basing it on my own experience of my sister and her friends constantly trying to steal my TMNT toys to play with and pretty much every guy in my 4th and 5th grade high achievement class spending their lunch breaks rolling up TMNT characters. This transitioned into Rifts around '90 or so.

Bullying of El would be a lot more subtle. They wouldn't fricking arrange a tightly choreographed skating circle and have the entire class laugh at her.
Have Mike dress in OP after getting to California. Really only their sports clothing was national before 1987.
Color monitor on Dustin's girlfriend's computer.
Nancy's outfits all need to have shoulderpads. For one thing, you wouldn't have even been able to buy blouses without pads in 86, for another she's the type of woman who absolutely would have had shoulderpads.
High school kids in the 80s were very much trying to appear adult. Even the nerdy freshmen would have stopped watching cartoons and buying toys. Having a jock say "I thought we were watching Thundercats" is insane.
        Not enough denim.
The Hellfire club shirts would have been a single color and the logo would have been on the back of the shirt rather than the front. Multi-color shirt printing was expensive as frick. Unless they had them silk-screened, in which case the older members' shirts would be distressed as hell.
No one used fancy names for weed back then. It was just pot or weed.

That's just what I've got from watching the first two episodes.

Mike was dressing in knockoff OP. Can't remember when OP became a thing, but OP, Quicksilver, and Bodyglove surf clothes were a thing by 1988. Vision Street Wear too.
People called it "grass" or "dope" sometimes. But yeah mostly "pot" or "weed"
Don't think high school kids would watch Thundercats. More likely reruns of Facts of Life, Diffrent Strokes, or even the Brady Bunch

            Anonymous

I'd say it started in '86 but like in summer of 86. Like nobody was wearing it and then suddenly everyone was in bermuda shorts. In my experience C&C Surf was first because their cartoon characters caught on with kids, then OP came next and stuck around until the early 90s.
Mike and Dustin would definitely be reading TMNT at this point as it was already a cult hit and didn't become "kiddy" until the cartoon in 1987.

The first three seasons had characters smoking cigarettes all the time. In this season the cop is in a gulag so it makes sense he doesn’t smoke but one of the teens begins to light a cigarette and another grabs it out of his mouth and yells “gross!” This was probably done because of parents complaining it made smoking look cool (even though it’s accurate to show more people of the era smoking). A few teens smoke weed but they’re are never shown directly doing so, it always cuts to them right after for comedic effect to make them look ridiculous

        Anonymous

        >This was probably done because of parents complaining it made smoking look cool
There was a pretty heavy anti-smoking campaign in the 80s. Public shaming is incredibly effective at stopping degenerate behavior. We stopped doing that (shaming in general) and people got fat, started smoking more, and even became more open about their drug use.

As an oldster born in 1980, I think it's pretty accurate. I don't think lipstick lesbians were common until the '90s. There were lesbians in the '80s but they were like kd lang or Indigo Girls tier. Like jean jackets and mullets type lesbians. Black girls weren't into D&D games. The ones I knew wanted to start R&B bands and become the next Janet Jackson. Sometimes black boys would hang out with whites, but mostly it was pretty segregated. I remember hair metal being way more popular than Stranger Things portrays it. Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Motley Crue were all huge. I guess the Billy character captured that. Lots of New Wave girls into George Michael and INXS.

Here they're fighting Vecna four years before the module was released.
Here's a bunch of high school jock seniors watching Thundercats.
Here's a bunch of high school kids with college rock music tastes instead of listening to Tiffany and Madonna.
Here's a kid from the midwest dressed in Ocean Pacific.

woke in what sense? Will is still in the closet and the dyke only opened up to Steve which makes sense as you even then you'd only tell that to people you trust will not judge you (and given how lesbians are usually perceived differently, it is not a surprise that Steve just accepts it; maybe he wouldn't if it was a guy

also this kind of representation is nothing new on media, Mysterious Skin (2004) by gregg araki was set on the 80s with some gays and it still was plausible then

      Anonymous

Gregg Araki was making movies about fans as early as 1987, they existed they just weren't mainstream like today.

The 80's were incredibly conservative compared to today, the satanic panic was in full swing and Christian fundamentalists had way more power than today. People thought heavy metal bands were unironic devil worshippers and had backwards messages in their songs.

Go back less than a century and US society was openly racist, sexist, homophobic etc. These were the normal positions a respectable politician would support by default. Now their great-grandkids attend BLM protests, kneel and apologise for being white, put pronouns in their bio, begin meetings by reminding everyone they're on stolen native land. Bravo conservatives for losing all cultural and institutional power so quickly.

        >US society was openly racist
the fricking deepest truth is that this word did not exist. ideas like jim crowe had their place, not saying it worked 100% but there were reasons behind it that weren't even brought up with malice. sometimes I wonder what society from back then, even blacks, think about the blacks of today.

Point is it signifies a progressive worldview antithetical to conservatism, and it's normalised to the point it's officially encouraged/required by many large companies, government departments etc. Just another sign of how the right wing has lost power. Not 10 years ago declaring your pronouns was some weird thing tumblr users did that ended up in cringe compilations, now it's a social norm.

“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

In the 80's you could genuinely be beaten to death for being gay. That was rare but happened. What was relatively common was for gay people to be beaten to a pulp. If you were Transgender it was highly likely you would have to abandon your family and friends and move location to transition.

Just check the actual movies from the 80s.
Gays were supposed to be kinda tolerated, but they were the butt of all jokes and kinda gross for example.
Movie heroes were real men and usually kind of an actual role model.

Romantic movies were 99% WMWF because that's what audiences wanted to see, plus the biggest actors were still whites(or israeli, but you get the point).

Music wise, that's where CIA has always pushed for degeneracy the most(70s Rock for example) so you got "ambiguous" dudes like David Bowie, Boy George, George Michael(not ambiguous at all but yeah) but that's what the radio passed.

Socially it was a death sentence to "come out of the closet", and they had to frequent each other in their own communities.

No of course not. The 80s in Stranger Things is a vibe, an aesthetic. It's not the reality. It's the pearly white, Tower of Babel, idealised version of the 80s. The Duffers are on a nostalgia trip but a 1-1 copy of the 1980s as they actually were wouldn't be easy to commodify because of all the bad shit that happened in that decade, so its just ignored and modern attitudes and sensibilities are injected into it to make it more palatable for audiences.

I mean, I do have to admit there was one family on our street that we thought was racist. The kid there wasn't allowed to hang out with us a lot. There was always some excuse or another. We caught on to what it was when were like 12-13, and the only kid that his parents would allow to hang out with him regularly was another white boy. Which was very odd, because that kid had clear behavior issues, as his family was trashy as hell, and just happened to be able to afford a home where we lived.

Well, one day, we're having a snowball fight. And the trashy kid puts on a big show as if he's hurt. But he always did that. He was so dramatic. You would think we bullied him, but we really didn't. He was just a sore loser, and always feigned injury when he couldn't beat us at something.
So, trashy kid goes to the other white kid's home, and later police show up. The trashy kid put on such a convincing show for the racist family, that they called the cops. The claim was that one of us stuffed our snowball with rocks. Which nobody believe happened. I sure as hell didn't use rocks, and the other boys sounded convincing in their denials.

After that, there was some bad blood between us and that racist family. But the kid wasn't truly racist. His parents maybe. But the kid was just under their thumb. As a teenager, he tried to make amends and play football with us. Everyone forgave him. They were all cool. Not me though. I was still holding a grudge. But in retrospect, I was being a huge b***h. I should have just forgiven him too. I've always felt ashamed about that.
