There are similarities. The story is about a coalition resistance fending off an overwhelming opposing force. Specifically for me, it is the drive of the film which relies on unfolding spectacle and set pieces rather than the individuals taking part in these events. There is really nothing connecting the viewer to the resistance in the picture other than the fact you're watching screen. It seemed a bit presumptuous for me that the audience is expected to engage with the plight just because the plight by its nature is in pursuit of virtuous ends. It's played deadpan, and all the courage, valour and passion is implicit. The effect is not preoccupied with storytelling or the humanity. Seems a counter to the films of Demy and Godard in this way.

Both District B13 movies. So you can understand the French really aren't much different than anyone else.

Le Doulos, by Melville with Belmondo, Un Flic, another Melville. (All of Melville's movie are worth a watch)

Buffet Froid and Trop Belle pour Toi by Bertrand Blier (his filmography is hit and miss)

Le Retour de Martin Guerre is pretty good.

Some good comedies: Le Père Noël est une ordure, Les Tontons Flingueurs, Rabbit Jacob, Le dîner de Cons, La Soupe aux Choux.

I've been enjoying Rohmer lately, Claire's Knee and The Green Ray especially are excellent.
