I don't want to join in on blindly shitting on Refn because I enjoy his films but they're massively overrated, The Neon Demon feels like some really cool aesthetic ideas with themes and plot that only exist to string them together, like man two hot girls showering blood off would look cool as frick, using some vain themes about the modeling industry will give me an excuse to shoot it. It works and they're fun to watch but people act like he makes these 10/10 substantive art films

The movie is ugly and has no technical mastery. all the shots are flat and the colors are so muted they're a bore to view. And you can say that was intentional because of the time of year but that's moronic there are many films that have done that exact thing and were at least enjoyable to look at.
The performances are fine i guess, the choice to keep the dialogue authentic makes it feel a bit more stilted but it worked because the family is obviously barely holding together. But their conflicts are boring as frick its just the same looping arguments over and over it gets old immediately. And when the goat started talking i literally laughed out loud that they were actually going there.

Refn's got much worse in his catalog, but even that setup's upstaged by Under the Silver Lake & Once Upon A Time In Hollywood not long after.
If i want to see artshit I would just go to /film/ and ask. This was a pure style over substance movie and it was awesome for that, I really enjoyed it, the chicks were hot, the visuals interesting, the score was also decent. I enjoy kino of course but movies like that and crank are my favorites.

I also don't understand how Dave Franco's character was getting away with beating his boss the crimelord's daughter. At first I thought due to his resemblance to Kristen Stewart with the hair and body type, that he was supposed to be her brother and Cryptkeeper Crime Boss Ed Harris's son. And his wife was a personal friend of Kristen's character that perhaps she held unrequited love for.
That would have made more sense and explains qhy Kristen Stewart and Ed Harris wouldn't touch him because he was still family. How did these higher up gangsters tolerate a lackey like him harming their family? In the Godfather it was established that Don Vito's old fashioned values thought that the man of the house is the head and has the right to beat his wife and children if he feels it as necessary and that these matters should be within that specific couple/family. But I never got that impression or any reason here.
