any recs on a film, era doesnt matter, where there's lots of smoking and investigating archives of news papers/records either physically or on computers.. mostly shot at night with very little chase sequences if any. can be heavy on dialogue. language doesnt matter. hard mode: detective dies at the end.
I love The Big Sleep and Laura the most. Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, Memories of Murder and China Town are great too, even Brick. I greatly enjoy Agatha Christie's stories but hate the adaptations.

what does Cinemaphile think about shows like Columbo, Midsomer Murders and Poirot?
There's an episode of either one of these going on TV at any point in the day but i've never sat through a full episode i think
columbo is kino. real comfy watching

The Poirot and Marple series are pretty great.
It's the english part of it that I don't like. When reading the books I imagined everyone less revolting.
not a detective movie technically but it's about a guy trying to solve a murder and uncover a conspiracy
