Perhaps it is impossible to make a good cartoon show these days if it's a big well-known brand like looney tunes. The megacorps behind them are scared shitless about taking any risks whatsoever, so anything they produce with these intellectual properties will be heavily sanitized in a way that fails to create any lasting impact and is guaranteed to alienate its existing fanbase the way it happens everytime. And from what i've read they appear to have put people in charge who are not that familiar with the source material as was the case with

No you can, it just takes someone who actually is passionate about the original and wants to keep the same spirit while doing a unique take with it.
The thing with Tiny Toons and almost all revivals is the people in charge either hate the original or don't give a shit about it, and really they want to either "fix" its flaws or really put their original story on tv but throw on the skin of whatever IP they have lying around.

I fricking hate how hypocritical the line "investors+executives these days don't take risks" is when these imbeciles do not but GUARANTEE THAT THEIR PRODUCT IS SHIT. Hiring people from this generation and talentless hacks IS A GUARANTEED RISK.

          Anonymous

          >HOW THE FRICK DO THESE LINES PRETEND TO NOT CONTRADICT EACH OTHER?

Settle down anon, not that type of risk. You're thinking of the risk that the existing fans don't like it, that's not much of a problem because they will see it regardless if it's any good or not, that's the built-in audience that comes by default with popular IP. Even if its terrible, they're guaranteed to continue watching it at least until the season ends in the hope that it gets better or at least so they're able to form a cohesive opinion.

The real risk is offending any blue-haired trannies who don't even watch the show over something political that causes them to organize a boycott. It's not just that you can't make jokes about race, gender or ethnicity anymore, it can be over something you *don't* do - like for example "why are there not enough female characters in this show" or "why are they just acting like normal people and not parading as being strong and independent the whole time". You can already tell they're likely considering these sort of things with the focus on Sweetie in the promo material, i mean look at

"The Showrunner is a politics Podcaster" says it all, my dude. That's practically her whole career. The few YouTube sketches she did were mostly about Michelle Bachmann. 'Nuff said.

          .

The end result probably won't be something completely terrible, but rather an animated show that's mostly forgettable and just sort of "meh".

So you're fricking telling me companies instead of actively going out to murder these trannies they cater to them? what the frick is this? 2012 Tumblr?
And cartoonists instead of getting tough and protecting what they love they shut the frick up and take it up the ass with sometimes a rant on Twitter and 0 threats of making that person's life a living hell? THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

              >And cartoonists instead of getting tough and protecting what they love they shut the frick up and take it up the ass

The cartoonists who do it out of love for the craft are normally on the internet at indie-ish channels where they have more freedom and don't have to worry about brand image. The ones who get put in charge of big projects with established IP are the suck-ups who care mostly about the money and the prestige of saying they worked on such a production even if they ended up turning it into hot garbage. You're not going to see a show like MeatCanyon's monster lab come out of warner and be aired on multiple tv channels. Maybe on one of those that air stuff for stoners like Adult Swim or Comedy central...

Other than than that what do they have? Buster is just "the main one" and Babs is a very annoying attempt at a Robin Williams routine

          Anonymous

Buster was based on Bugs Bunny from Chuck Jones' classic shorts, especially in terms of his personality. Babs is based on Bugs Bunny from the classic Bob Clampett shorts. That's probably why it came out as if they were brother and sister, but they weren't. There are already a couple of episodes in which Buster and Babs have different parents, and in the first episode where they first appear, they already indicated that they are not related, and Babs kissed Buster when Babs disguised herself as Jessica Rabbit.

          >the "no relation" joke

I don't think that was a joke, just something they repeated on purpose to establish that there's no relation. Since they're both the fission product of a decaying Bugs Bunny atom which has split into smaller male and female equivalents it's easy to assume they're related, so the writers probably deemed it necessary to make it clear they're not. Repeating something over and over in a cutesy way as if it's a catchphrase doesn't make it a joke IMO.

It would make more sense with them looking alike and having the same last name if they did it in the 90s, but we can't go back and change that they were a romantic couple. It's far too late to change it without it being really awkward and universally hated of a decision

Sweetie was a side character in the original show. She was kind of a antagonistic c**t who harassed Furrball in a twist of what Sylvester/Tweety is. She also harassed other characters and won out until they realized how much people hated it and had her get shit.
Now she's being reworked as a very directly mentioned main character on the level of the other four.
Some people are reasonably thinking if she has the same personality she will suck ass, some people are more reasonably thinking that her personality will be changed like almost everything else is and she'll be a good character. And some people are going full hysterics by saying she'll be a sjw mouthpiece or be a dyke dating babs or whatever else. Really depends

Sweetie barely existed in the original show and mostly only contributed to sight gags. They had to give her an entire episode of shorts starring her to amount to any significant airtime.

Honestly that seems like a lot of complaining over nothing but also I kind of think of Tweety as one of the main Looney Toons (or at the very least at the top of B list) so it stands to reason that Tweety's legacy charcter would be given similar focus.

This is a moronic complaint. The wanted 3 boys, 3 girls. Fifi is difficult to write in 2022, Shirley was ALWAYS a tricky one to make funny. Sweetie's there to be "the short-tempered one." Mark my words, the humor coming from her will be a HIGHLIGHT compared to other shit.

. The Sweetie shorts were poor quality (not omniloathed shit tier that everyone hated, like you're making out - that's an opinion that pretty much sprung out of thin air with the new show). They were trying to do "Tweetie vs. Syvester... but different!" but couldn't figure out how. That's not going to be an issue in the new show. There's going to be 5 "main" characters, with Buster and Babs clearly getting the focus. Sweetie will mostly show up to be angry and mean a couple times an episode. That's really not going to be a big impact on the show quality, "little bird that gets surprisingly angry and violent" isn't a terrible schtick, the problem was that the original shorts just weren't very good.

You want a real problem? Babs, the character known for doing lots of impressions, has been given to a VA that doesn't do very many voices. She's a fine VA, but this is a mismatch. Oh and the showrunner has done almost nothing aside from political humor and writing a "sassy gay man explains Game of thrones."

Babs new VA has some range in the roles I have seen her in and she has experience so I'm not writing her off until I heard what she sounds like as Babs and if she can do impressions.
At the same time, Tress is pretty much the greatest female VA of all time so getting a same-level replacement is pretty much impossible. And it's not clear if Tress herself didn't want to be in this as suggested.

As for Babs, I'm not sure if they'll even have her as an impersonator in the reboot. Unlike AM2020 where, being a "continuation" of the original show, it tried striking an awkward middle ground between slavishly replicating the old show and being its own thing, Looniversity is very much trying to be its own take, continuity included. Much of the hallmarks aren't going to be taken as automatics, made very clear by the whole twin thing.

Thus, Babs' new VA may not have even been picked because she is a great impersonator; they may have changed the core of Babs and felt that this gal could do this new incarnation of the bunny the best.

The episodes focus on Buster, the cool (but sometimes less cool than he thinks) guy, Babs who goes into impersonations at the drop of the hat, Plucky the bossy egotist, Hampton the living doormat, and Sweetie who has unexpected depths of temper, sadism, and general violence. I see nothing gamebreaking by having Sweetie be Babs' wingwoman instead of Shirley.

It's her Ramona Flowers punk aesthetic and WB's push for Tweetie every few years that makes it off-putting. She's also the most left field character to promote to main since she was one of the least prominent and least liked of the original Tiny Toons

Can't be any worse than when, even DURING the 90s, they kept shoving Elmyra down everyone's throat. And not just in Tiny Toons, but in Animaniacs, as well. And then forcing her as a literal title character for the final season of Pinky & The Brain.

She was also in Hysteria. I don't know why WB had such a hard on for Elmer in a wig.

It's the weirdest thing, because I remember during Tiny Toons they actually were going to spin her off into her own show. Two episodes were produced, but the show was cancelled, so those episodes were instead worked into regular episodes of Tiny Toons, even though the all-human (except for pet Furball) setting and Elmyra's family felt very "off" from typical Tiny Toons.

She was Obvious With Hindsight. They wanted another girl to hang out with Babs in the core group. They're apparently going to give a College Try to having Fifi in this, but her usual "le sex appeal" schtick is likely to be too tricky to have her in the core group. Shirley's Valley Girl New Age Mystic stuff provided some amusement in the old show, but I can see why they might look at her, then point into the background and go "no, we'll go with the violent bird instead."

              Anonymous

Fifi wasn't about sex appeal she was about chasing dudes like Pepe only for them to be repulsed by her stench. The way TMS drew her turned into sex appeal but that was unintended. Fifi has a completely different schtick in this and is seemingly gonna be like the Beret Girl from An Extremely Goofy Movie.

No, I seriously think Sweetie can work as a main if she's rewritten a bit to become more likable. Like she puts on a tough image but she's really not, she's more of the dorky theater kid the others in the main friend group are.
Thing is it's going to take good writers to pull off this character being moved up to the same level that someone like Plucky is. And while I know she'll get a personality revamp that takes influences from the original but isn't the same, with them pulling the twins stunt I don't know if they can actually do it decently

My guess is she'll be a lot like Pesto maybe with some Nagatoro mixed in. Unexpected temper-flares, and some tsundere-bullying of Furball. I could be WAY off since the latter trait was something Cinemaphile shitposters threw in, but it does feel like the sort of thing they might throw into this show when you consider the "they're college kids having college experiences, and it's not just short skits" dynamic.

              Anonymous

She might be bullying Furrball, I think it's more likely she's bullying the guys in the main group like Hamton, Plucky or Buster
But if they are gay maybe not...

                Anonymous

She'll probably "bully" Plucky/Hampton in the same way Pesto bullies Squit, with no "secretly likes him" element.

                Anonymous

I get the feeling everyone's gonna bully Hamton. If you like at all the promotional art, 9 times out of 10 he seems to be tripping over himself. In the old show, he was a straightman, but in this one it feels like they're just gonna make him a fricking loser.

I guarantee you if everyone isn't trying to be supportive of a guy who is having trouble adjusting to the school and is just really bullying him he'll 100% be the only straight one and the other four will be dating the remaining same-sex character in their group

These are my thoughts exactly. I just think they'll modernize her and potentially ruin her, sort of like all the younger duck girls in NuTales. The fact they ruined Babs and Buster and all the character development around that very open and canonical ship just shows the overall disrespect for the characters.

The DT 2017 crew made some questionable choices but they were clearly enthusiastic about Ducks and Disney Afternoon stuff. The Showrunner had a good amount of industry experience. I disagree with many of their choices but I understand the logic.

This will be far worse. The Showrunner spouted gibberish when asked why she made Buster and Babs siblings.

How creative he and his team were, this tweet that blew up social networks speaks volumes. It's not like it was even possible for someone to have experience with duck cartoons in the 2010s. The point is that he climbed through the ranks the proper way: he wrote scripts for a season of Wonder over Yonder then he was promoted to story editor on that show and then they gave him his own show. That's how the process is supposed to work. With Tiny Toons, they just put a podcaster in charge who's never even written a script for a 6 minute cartoon let alone a 20 minute one.

    1. When is it even coming out, anyway? Do we have an estimate yet?

    2. Ehhh, I've got low expectations for it because of what they did to Animaniacs, and I know I've complained about it before, but those V mouths drive me nuts, I wasn't expecting to see them again.
I totally expect the goofiness will be way toned down, there'll be a lot of hamfisted woke shit in there, and there's going to be a lot more one-sided political stuff in there like in Animaniacs, where you can tell who is or isn't allowed to be made fun of.
Cutting Babs' voice actress is a massive gamble and I don't know what to think there, a massive chunk of Babs' whole schtick is being voiced by someone with an incredible range, and that's not something most VAs can do.
Putting Sweetie in the forefront is weird, but I can't comment on that, I barely remember her from the original show.
I'll be really surprised if they continue the OG show's gag of breast size being tied to their clothing, but I've got my fingers crossed, there were some funny gags back then.
My biggest red flag is still the Babs+Buster thing, everyone who has watched the OG show is grossed out by it, but the showrunners seem to have no problem with it, which means either they haven't actually watched the show, only skimmed it, or they're those kinds of shitheads that sees something people like and go "eew yuck, I can do better" while ignoring what people actually liked. (Seems like a lot of reboots are made by THESE guys, t.b.h.)

I don't know, I don't have high expectations, but I haven't written it off yet.

Small rewrites are being set in.
Diskin is Buster. He uses his Numbah 2 voice mixed with his Baby Gonzo voice. Makes Buster sound squeaky and pretty close to Adlers portrayal.

Petiole do, everywhere but Cinemaphile which prefers Caballeros

Malarky, Caballeros was good and more universally praised on Cinemaphile... but never had a fraction of the views. 3Cab threads just didn't have the IPs that DuckTales threads had. It was good, but "Cinemaphile prefers 3Cabs" is a forced meme.

Ducktales had over 5x the amount of episodes and ran over years with far more characters and controversy, of course it would be discussed more then something that had all episodes dropped over one week.
But that doesn't mean that one is preferred because it's discussed more. Star Vs was discussed way more then something like Primal but if everyone is hatewatching the former that doesn't mean it's preferred.
If Ducktales ended by the time Della returned mid S2 I'd might agree with you, but everyone was done the further it got from that moment

            Anonymous

            >NuTales was longer and ran for years more and had a broader broadcast!

Yes. And all those things were factors in it becoming more popular, even on Cinemaphile.

            >ignoring how jam packed every episodes debut was
            >a show with more seasons over time had more people talking
            >ignoring how each season got steadily worse
            Nutales shill

            >NuTales got worse as the seasons went on
And 3Cabs didn't get more seasons. That's NOT me saying it's bad, that's me saying that it was short. Combined with the fact that it was damn hard to find, it never grew a very large fandom. A (rightfully) passionate one, but not a large one.

              Anonymous

If you mean "more discussed" then I agree with you. But at least on Cinemaphile, that doesn't mean more popular the same way PPG 16 being more discussed then the original PPG would make it more popular.
Funny thing is I like DT more then most people here too, just see how everyone who brings it up hates it like the thread that's up right now

                Anonymous

I'm going to say there were more fans of DT than of 3Cab, even on Cinemaphile. You can question my measuring stick, but I'd argue the drawthreads support this. 3Cabs was great, it was short, it had a passionate fandom that enjoyed its 13 episodes. But it's silly to say "Cinemaphile preferred 3Cabs." Not enough people SAW it for that to be a meaningful statement.

Drawthreads can be a good metric but can also be a crapshoot depending on who is requesting what and how much, or how often someone is willing to draw it. They’ve always been heavy on the waifus in particular so furry stuff is usually affected. There’s always other metrics use can use
Though again, I do agree with you that lack of knowledge of 3 Cabs leads to less popularity outside Cinemaphile. Suppose inside Cinemaphile it’s eye of the beholder

                Anonymous

I mean, it's a silly metric, very lopsided episode list number, and unequal exposure due to one being easily available. It's fair to ask which Pixar movie Cinemaphile liked the most, trying to compare the popularity of the two bird shows is a bit silly.

Rolling things back to Tiny Toons though, it's even sillier to compare what's going on here to what happened with DuckTales 2017. Fiddling with the boys' personalities wasn't going to please everyone, but it was a fair approach similar to what happened with Lola in TLTS. It's in a whooooooooole different league from Tiny Toons going Full Incest.

Melissa has a different design on every single short she was in (just like Claude Cat), but her designs in The Scarlet Pumpernickel and Quackbusters are pretty much the same, she's also in that mobage game and she's also called Melissa there, not that any of this matters since they clearly got Shirley's powers and design from her Quackbusters appearance

Penelope was called Fifi in the original shorts, they renamed her in the 90s for merchandise purposes, same with Marvin who had no name at all (other than being called Martian commander once) until they came out with a name for him in the 80s to sell merch, Taz was only in 5 shorts out of the 1000 shorts they did and so on

Gibson is the only showrunner on this. She's literally the only person listed as "showrunner." When you ask WB they say "Erin Gibson is showrunner." Everyone that you might WANT to be a showrunner is an executive producer, which is a garbage title that does not mean they actually do anything. Steven Spielberg was executive producer of the original, and had practically nothing with the creative process.

I have no idea why the frick you're playing this "don't be worried, she's not really charge" game. It's very strange. People should be worried, she's really in charge.

Some anon said that they got someone from Over the Garden Wall to be co-showrunner and that's likely true. DuckTales had two showrunners, Francisco Angones who handled the writing, and Matt Youngberg who handled the animation. Amblin's just not promoting the animator likely because of some "writing is everything, who cares about who does the drawing" attitude.

          >some anon said
cool. WB says she's the showrunner and lists nobody else as showrunner. Might Nate Cash be mingling among the artists more than your typical executive producer, in light of the fact that Erin Gibson is the most unqualified showrunner in all of animation? Yeah, maybe. Is that relevant to what we're talking about? No. What everyone is worried about is the writing, not the animation. And I don't buy for a moment that anyone involved in this is going to meddle with the showrunner's writing. She's a politics podcaster, going up to her and saying "um, I know you're listed as running this show, I'm not sure you know what you're doing" would be asking to be crucified.

Well yeah that's just cope. There will be one person in charge of writing because projects need clear hierarchy. You can't have someone reporting to two people who can give contradictory orders. But the show having only one showrunner is false. Someone has to be in charge of making sure the animation process goes smoothly and Gibson is even less qualified for that than she is for being in charge of a staff of writers.

She's literally the only person with the title Showrunner. He's important in the project, but "Showrunner" is a specific title, and one that he hasn't been given. There's a showrunner and there's an executive producer that's probably going to have to get in the trenches more than the typical executive producer because a moron without experience got the job of showrunner.

Yeah anon, because only one person has come up with the writing for a tv show, especially when it's a comedy show with little plot. The other co-producer and writers in the writer room has no say.

That's not what I'm saying. Look over at The Dragon Prince. Aaron Ehasz was the show's showrunner for the first few seasons. It's no secret that some of the writing staff disagreed with him on things, and do you know what he did? He said "no, I'm in charge, this is my story, this is what we're doing."

(And then a couple of the lower ranking employees [including the girl that just updated their twitter] ran off to cry on social media about how mean he was to ignore the other staff. Unfortunately this time the one most likely to cry on twitter is in charge.)

You physically will not shut up about Gravity Falls as the greatest cartoon of all time. You all will only make threads or social media posts for Gravity Falls, which gets thousands of Cinemaphile posts or hundreds of thousands of likes per twitter post. You will pretend no other cartoon exists.
So you get what you deserve. Other shows try to ape it so you discuss them.

        >Trying to make this about Gravity Falls

The core issue is that the show was given to someone with no animation experience and no real writing experience (a few short mostly-political skits on a collegehumor-wannabe, and some Games of Thrones summaries that rely on the humor of being spoken by a gay dude). Having absolutely no idea what she's doing, she pulled ideas from whatever she'd seen. If Gravity Falls hadn't existed she'd pull the ideas from Steven Universe, or maybe fricking Riverdale or something.

                >if she's some feminist Mary Sue it will suck
This is what I'm scared of, what made Babs special was what a wacky frickup she was allowed to be, she could be badass and heroic (as these kinds of shows got) too but she didn't have to be the nagging and cooler more competent serious love interest like they always used to force female characters to be and it was nice to see her actually equal with Buster in both comedy and importance. People seem to constantly frick that up.

If we're lucky the new Fifi will be like the Beret Girl from An Extremely Goofy movie crossed with Creepy Susie.

The funny thing is, Babs was the perfect feminist character in the original.
She was EQUAL to Buster. They could both get on top of each other, be the shining star, frick up heavily, get comedic slapstick done by them or to them. And she was funny in her own right, possibly the first cartoon character that really was above the male counterpart.
When they try to make her the "feminist star who can't do wrong" they are missing the entire point of what she did

Well they have a history of a case, as well as many characters with red hair were changed to black for no reason.

In fact I bet they tried to force one of the characters to be the black representative, ignoring a character that fits perfectly as a good representation for black comunity

    What will Arnold be like?

Well since masculinity is seen as something negative by the showrunner, two options remain the same and he is treated as a villain or the option B......

I mean Arnold was always a minor antagonist, usually henching for Montana Max.

Can I just have a cartoon that makes me laugh instead of trying to score all these points for fake heroism and platform coveting? Tiny Toons did have serious moments sometimes even political but it wasn't sappy to the point of being above parody and satire during either of those things. I want them to continue being satirical. Make with the ha-ha, you tribal-teat sucking monkeys.

I'm in this for Babs, Fifi, and Shirley the Loon, so if the reboot somehow manages to do them justice, I'll watch it and be somewhat happy. But the making Buster and Babs twins thing is a really terrible sign. Babs' romantic relationship with Buster was a big part of her character, no it wasn't the main thing or in every episode, but it was a thing. For them to change it for no reason doesn't make any sense and isn't a good sign.

I care a lot less about Shirley and Plucky being together because that was really background, but I'll be mad if they pull some shit like nerfing Shirley's psychic powers for no reason, I'm nervous they'll make her a twitter keyboard warrior. That's not even the most out of the blue take I can imagine but it's important if they're changing the Valley Girl thing that it is still fun.

I'm even more worried about Fifi because of all of the shit with Pepe. But I actually do think a beatnik poet take with her would be really cute, so I kinda like what I have seen of nuFifi so far, hope they don't ruin her.

If we're lucky the new Fifi will be like the Beret Girl from An Extremely Goofy movie crossed with Creepy Susie.

I actually think Fifi and Shirley will both turn out fine because they aren't the focus and only will show up every few episodes.
Fifi has the beatnik romantic vibe going which suits her really well and is probably the best thing since she's not allowed to do her typical chasing anymore. Shirley already has her psychic powers highlighted in the art and design and that's far more interesting to cover for certain episodes then changing her into something random.
I'm more worried about the main cast.

        >I'm more worried about the main cast.

More than fair and Babs especially has this "lightening in a bottle" thing that I think will be nearly impossible to actually get right.

You're right that it's easier for Fifi and Shirley who were side characters in the original and are staying side characters now.

I feel like Buster and Sweety will also be tricky. They'll want to make Buster stand in for men and just make him "a man who is stupid and should shut up." Plucky might be fine. Him just being Daffy works better than the other characters just being their mentor because he's less obviously different from them and Daffy is always a crowd pleaser in all his different personalities from over the years (except for his "just evil, just a villain" phase from those incredibly shitty Speedy Gonzales cartoons, and I feel like "he's just evil and a villain now" is also the one characterization that will ruin Plucky, the most popular character from the original...so now that I think about it, they'll probably do exactly that just to ruin the reboot). No idea about Hampton.
