What are your thoughts on Grendel?

As well as Matt Wagner's work in general. My introduction to him was his Monster Men and Mad Monk Batman stories, which I really enjoyed.

I'm finding Grendel to be interesting enough to continue with but frustrating and difficult to follow at times.

Not a fan. Grendel I couldn't get into. His Batman stuff was fine, but nothing special. I liked his Madame Xanadu series, but the lions share of that was Reeder.

The idea of a gentleman thief is cool
Complicating with a crippled native american werewolf and countless future mantles is not.
To make things worse the first Grendel story is completely amateur and unfinished.

Its crazy how back in th 2000's this was like one of the top comics you'd be recommended, now no one talks about it.

This. Remove the wolfman from the main arc, ignore the rest of the series, and you'll have a decent book.

Prime and the Vatican arc are great though.

loved his tributes to old school Batman and his Batman in general. Love his covers. Batman in Trinity is almost pitch perfect. Wagner showed the gallows humor that most other writers forget is a part of Batman's character
    never got into Grendel.

It's a mess. A bit of a cool idea lost amongst a sea of mediocrity. Everything else past Hunter sucks even more. He's like Hannibal, but utterly devoid of charm.

Why? There's not a chance in hell its any good but barely anyone remembers the character so I don't see it getting much attention.

I've only read really the Hunter Rose stuff so far, and the second one about the b***h Christine in the future. That one sucked and I barely remember it though. The Hunter Rose stuff is a lot of fun though I always find the supernatural and werewolf elements really weird and sometimes out of place and I was never sure about the pedophilia themes in there but it still has a lot of solid interesting stuff. He was pretty young when he made this shit though so I kind of get why it's all over the place.

I think part of the appeal though is that he stuck with it so long and took in such weird directions like the Heavy Metal looking sci-fi Grendel stuff that I really want to read. It's interesting to see a guy keep coming back to one concept and just running it through every new ridiculous idea he can think of. It's kind of like Cerebus to me, a guy taking this original simple derivative idea and just trying to stretch it for as long as possible in many different directions. Obviously not exactly similar or as good though but Wagner never had multiple mental breakdowns either.

The early stuff is really beautiful and Prime stuff is sick, that's all i've read I need to fill in the blanks

    Oldgay here

I loved it all. It's a bit like Doctor Who, you imprint on your first 'Grendel' resent the one that follows your first but if you muscle through it you begin to appreciate Wagner's experimentation until he settles on Orion and the rise of Grendel Kahn and then after that it stabilized between Grendel Prime and flashback stories with Hunter Rose. I can understand why people wouldn't like all of it, and yes Argent is a really weird out of place character in the Rose saga but Wagner was always trying something new when he could have just kept rehashing things so I have to give him credit for that.

Also? when he crossed Hunter Rose with Batman and the Shadow he didn't use it as an opportunity to show that his OC was better than either, just an equal opponent which I always thought was quite professional of Wagner.

I think the real reason Hunter lost to both of them was really in the end he never actually applied himself and just did everything for fun. Batman’s and the shadow are completely dedicated to their causes but Grendel only really cared so long as it entertained him. It’s more pointed out in the Shadow mini how people who’ve are dedicated enough and play it hard enough can beat him by virtue that he doesn’t really care
