Shows run for top long, creators run out of stream, new writers are fans of the show who simultaneously don't understand it and completely lean into meta humor and in jokes.
If a character becoming a one dimensional parody of itself is "Flanderization" then I propose we call a show that's became entirely self-referential and meta "Sunnyfied."
Your chart extends well beyond animation.

Modern writers aren't good because literacy has dropped off. People used to read constantly whether it was Magazines, Newspapers or books.
You can't expect high quality entertainment when the modern world puts literature on the backburner.

The constant reanimation of dead futurama only to get 8 terrible episodes at a time is a cruel joke i will never understand. Some of the writing in disenchantment reminds me of futurama sometimes. It's not as good as peak futurama but it has its moments and it's wholly better than zombie futurama.

zombie zombie futurama is horrible because it doesn't have a single good episode
i didn't mind zombie futurama, getting one good episode and two bad episodes is a nice tradeoff in the modern """adult""" animation era

trey parker expected to be cancelled every season so he just never tried very hard, and when the novelty of having a show wore off he just phoned it in even more.

It's because they are obsessed with IPs. Once you have a half decent one you can milk it for eternity

      Anonymous

at this point, its because everything is streamed so no one wants to spend a lot of money on new ips and would rather just play reruns of the same cartoons for a million episodes which means shit like the simpsions and family guy are the most profitable because even with lower ratings they can still sell syndication/streaming packages and more episodes means more money because channels/netflix can't pick and chose the good episodes.

simpsons wasn't like that. It was fantastic during the 90s, OK during the early 2000s, then just kept getting worse and worse after the movie came out, and finally plummeted after around 2012-2014ish.

I completely agree with your family guy rating.
It's always strange to me when people complain that post-cancellation FG has no plot and the characters are all butthole caricatures - who the FRICK is watching a show like Family Guy for the plot? FG characters are tools that you tell gag jokes with, like looney tunes characters.

Why don't Americans know when enough is enough?

Even though we're out of the era where it was really relevant we still see the effects of the syndication system on our television media. If you were making a show in the 80s or 90s you really wanted to get it to at least 100 episodes so that you could bundle it up and sell syndication rights for eternity.

The shows lose their identity over time. It happens when they hit ratings drops. Audience gets bored of the same old same old. So to try and win them back they start pandering. They start having on "guest stars" which aren't new characters with a celebs voice, its just the celeb themselves in cartoon form. Then they start pandering politically because the show is already dead so might as well use it as a platform right?

So the line keeps going down

I have a theory that when a sitcom is originally greenlit, it is greenlit for a maximum of 4 seasons. This causes the writers to put their best effort into the first handful of seasons, making any subsequent seasons just feel like “less” in comparison.

      Anonymous

thats not a theory that is just how it works
and its usually just for 1 or 2 seasons not 4

They hire good writers for the first season in order to get everyone hooked and to get the network to buy the whole season. After that they switch to cheaper writers so they can pocket more money. By that time audiences are already hooked and they keep watching no matter what

Hayes has a shit ton of kids and needed the money, his estate did get taken over by his son, but scientology was trying to control him and his career. He went on a really shitty tour after south park and right before he died. Arguably, touring killed him. He had a good thing going and fricked it up.

With the power of AI, soon I will be able to de-age modern seasons of the Simpsons, both visually and sonically. Modern writing, classic 90's filter, de-aged voice acting. I cannot account for the poor delivery of the later season cast, but I now I can truly compare modern Simpson's to the classic era so I can know how awful it is.

    I am severely autistic.

the answer of shows becoming more and more shit is because actors become famous, their salaries increase, egoes collide (why am I not paid double as the main character? do it or I quit), writers run out of ideas, maybe the directors are getting more offers and then want to end this ASAP but then the network wants a gorillion seasons, more egoes collide, etc etc
