One Piece is about freedom and dreaming vs the establishment that wants you complacent. Every arc follows these notes and every fight/power up is in furtherance of that core message. I don't have to sit down and say "the straw hat represents luffys unpacked trauma with his father abandoning him" because if that was something the anime wanted me to focus on it would be mentioned. I do not need "depth" when I can look at the surface and see the beauty right there.
