Season five flanderized all the characters and lost the endless summer ambience of the show.

The show got flanderized real early on. Ed used to be just a meathead who was sensible in the first season, but then he got downgraded to mentally moronic for 95% of his dialogue later on.

the show really needed more episodes where it ended with a definitive win for the Eds, show was hilarious but sometimes it could be a bit of a buzzkill watching more than maybe two episodes in a row since most of them ended with failure for them(Johnny Bravo and to a lesser degree Dexter's Lab kind of had similar problems in that area)

it's kind of telling that episode is the one episode in the entire series that Danny Antonucci didn't direct himself and is probably the worst episode in the show

I see what you mean but on the other hand I don’t think that one episode in the final season that ends with Eddy standing up for Edd and telling everyone to just frick off for once would have been nearly as satisfying. Would have made a cute finale if we never got the movie.

The school based episodes were not that great, tbh. I liked it better when they had their misadventures in their neighborhood. Maybe, if it switched between the school and neighborhood I would like it better, but the school seemed at a totally different location far from where they lived.

not to mention it makes absolutely no sense to continue to only have the small cast in a busy public school. I know other kids and teachers are referred to, and in the end it was a good idea for them to not introduce new kids at the school, but all in all it was really just pointless to ever even try doing that school stuff.

Eddy in the later seasons, he became frustratingly stupid and was practically looking for an opportunity to throw Ed and Double-D under a bus for his own benefit. I'm not saying he was a paragon before, but it was better balanced before.

I also didn't like how much recycled audio they used in the later seasons, it never sounded right.

Unironically not a single bad thing about this show. Entire run is great beginning to end, school seasons included. I think they were kinda lazy with random Kanker endings sometimes but it's not a big deal to me.

Season 5 hate is weird to me, it produced a lot of great episodes (like pic related), kept the expressions as expressive & funny as ever and it was still entertaining.

      >Season 5
Too much gay ass crying in that season and in the movie. No surprise whoever was responsible for that shit (forgot her name) later worked on Steven Universe

        Anonymous

I don't remember a lot of Steven Universe tier crying in the later run and whenever it does happen I think it definitely earned it (A Fistful of Ed & Big Picture Show are both fantastic, they give the characters depth while still maintaining the spirit of the show, which I imagine wasn't an easy task)

Season 5 is a step down from the rest just from their admission that they had to change the setting to keep going, but it's still great. I respect they made that small compromise instead of trying to add new characters or something. The flanderization arguments have merit, but at the same time the show was actively working toward the Eds' development that culminated in the movie. It's different, but still the same show and still top tier.

I don't think it's inherently a bad thing they had to introduce a new setting to get some fresh ideas. If it felt like a different show I would agree, but it still felt like Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Something I forgot to mention earlier is that season 5 was also the first season where they did digital ink and paint and I greatly respect how seamless the transition was and that they never used it as an excuse to get lazy with the animation.

Didn't like how the Eds acted in season 5. Ed wasn't even the funny kind of dumb anymore, he just spewed non-sequitur, and just just felt like a lost puppy around the other Eds. Double D got a little too much focus and spent a lot of time being against whatever Ed and Eddy were doing, to point it makes you wonder why he was even friends with them. Eddy was just constantly angry and yelling every time he spoke and seemed to have become almost as dumb as Ed.

Eddy changing from a smooth-talking heckler who had a temper but cared for his friends to a screeching autist who constantly threw them under the bus
Double D edging dangerously close to Mary Sue territory by the series' end(straight-A student, all the girls crushed on him at least once, hardly ever took part in scams, occassionally teamed up with the other kids to screw the other Eds over, etc.)
...that's about it really, and the movie makes both those points irrelevant

The school was creepily empty and it got weird how they had the cul-de-sac kids together all the time when they should be separated by age.

  38. 3 months ago

    It ended.

And I don't mean "they didn't keep making episodes forever" like Simpsons, but the fact the IP is more or less dead. No sequel series, no spinoffs or alternate media besides MAYBE a video game once every decade if we're lucky, and no true spiritual successors because Antonucci just kinda disappeared from the face of the earth after the show concluded (I know he's still doing stuff, but you never hear about him without going out of your way to see what he's up to, and nothing else he made ever really captures the same energy as Ed Edd n Eddy).
It's a double-edged sword, I guess. I love this show, but at the same time it being dead is bittersweet because I wouldn't want it ending up like, say, Powerpuff Girls which has been in remake hell for some time now.

Times like this make me wish I could really play Ed Edd n Eddy Online.

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but the movie kind of makes some of the episodes(Eddy getting humiliated in front of everyone because he thought he had a date with Nazz, the middle name episode, the school photo episode, any episode that ended with the Eds getting beaten up, etc.) a little harder to watch in hindsight

It's weird when you think about just how long EEnE was actually on the air for
When it premiered it was airing alongside Dexter, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken and the Powerpuff Girls
By the time the movie aired, all of its contemporaries had either ended or gotten cancelled(including newer ones like Fosters, KND, Billy and Mandy and Camp Lazlo), and Adventure Time's pilot had already been released
