5. Never felt invested in the humans that are 90% of the movie, but at least they aren't Full moron like the Chinese sequel
6. Trying to pivot to "Godzilla is the good monster" right at the end was silly.
It manages to make a giant Kaiju film....tedious.
All the zoomies and zillaheads trying to prop this movie up, based on the 5 ENTIRE MINUTES the film is entertaining.
It's amazing how they made the subject a bore to sit though. Fox managed the same thing with teen superhero horror lesbians. How do studios screen this and not realize how much of a yawn they are? Is it the Cocaine?
No, I've seen plenty of them, but not all of them.
None of them Kaijublock the audience as badly as this movie. You can miss the entire first half of the film, and nothing of value would be lost.
It has ONE "good" Kaiju battle at the end (in complete darkness, thanks WB!) that spends equal time of some soldiers fricking about.
It has people STARVING for monster action by the first half, starts a fight....then abruptly cuts to television bullshit. I mean, later on the Chinese just take a colossal shit on the entire franchise with the sequels, but that doesn't make this less-bad. Skull Island is great because there's crazy monsters and menace all over it, and everything isn't so bloated-up in size as to make the humans inconsequential lice.
Skull Island is a great Kaiju movie. 2014 is rubbish that tries to act Important (lel).

1954 got 16 minutes of screentime
2014 got 26 minutes of screen time
16/90 for '54's Godzilla:Runtime ratio: 0.1777
26/123 for '14's Godzilla:Runtime ratio 0.2113
1954 is a massive outlier and we both know it, the Japs had barely mastered matchbox cars and papercraft buildings at that point. Now do a comparison to literally ANY Zilla movie made past 1954, you chucklehead.
KotM is trash for reasons that have nothing to do with monsters.
People don't go to Godzilla movies to see 1954 style zilla any more than they got to cape films to see 1944 style Superman. 1954 benefitted massively from having a fresh premise.
I remember seeing a couple charts with calculations like that. It was probably both Godzilla's screentime in the film and his screentime relative to the length of the entire movie. I think Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla from 1993 had the best ratio and before the anime movies the worst screentime ratio was in Invasion of Astro Monster.
It's also kek-worthy that you shills have to pad out Godzilla's screen time with: >Slow developing scene of Godzilla's shape vaguely hinted at in smoke and clouds >Godzilla spines seen as he methodically swims along
and other such shittery.
The difference is 2014 keeps wienerblocking and cutting away from the fight scenes right when they are getting good
Ruins the immersion and makes it feel like Godzilla has less screen-time
> pure white people in the military > blacks and mutts almost non existent > no quipping > kaiju cry on screen and act with the humans. That female muto crying scene and when she kills all the humans was kino > serious take on the monsters

There will never be a movie like it.
I remember some critics saying that it's "very irresponsible in today's climate". I love how this series just can't be pigeon-holed and usurped politically. As long as it doesn't go against love of peace and nature.

Frick off.
It was made right before movies started to become pozzed. Watching the 2014 and 2019 movies back to back and you can see just how woke blockbuster films became.
2019 is a mainland China production, it's only agenda is to kill off the only Japanese character and assert that all the important Kaiju are native Chinese.
The Mutos look like papercraft brought to life, or cheap japanese kaiju costumes that CGI does really not fix at all. Triangular tail-light eyes? Really?
I like this and the sequel mostly because of the world it creates. Seeing Godzilla being benevolent was a nice surprise because I expected another repeat of the same story that Toho Godzilla was and still is trapped with.
I remember liking it but there was one scene which pissed me off, it's when there is the baddy monster smashing up the city and it is building up to Godzilla and the build up is awesome. He gets out the water and floods the place because he so big but you don't see him, then the baddy monster is smashing up stuff and it cuts to human street view and you see Zilla's feet and it does a pan up to his face and he does a big roar. Great here he is time for a big monster fight but it does an epic humourous cut to a kid watching clips of the fight on the news so you don't actually get to see and it just leaves the audience with blue balls.
The movies is a tense, slow-burn tale of a soldier attempting to return home, set against the backdrop of troop movements and an occasional mythical monster shambling about in the background. Truly brave film-making.
At least it was tense for me, I had drank way too much soder before the start, and was afraid to leave for a piss because I felt that Godzilla might ACTUALLY show up any hour.
Showa > Heisei > Legendary > Millennium > Reiwa
But I swear if the next movie does anything at all to undermine Godzilla again it goes down on the list.
It stands alone as a masterpiece of cinema in general but the series managed to find its own way outside of that by creating a fascinating world. Godzilla 2014 and KotM return to that tradition. This is what I've been missing in Godzilla movies since the 90s. Even if it does some changes to Mothra and Rodan that may appear strange it's not a problem to me. Godzilla is probably more different than anyone else.
i thought cranston's character was the best part and i liked a lot of the early scenes of them sneaking about into the restricted zone
the movie kills him off and then has much more generic stuff as time went on
could have been a lot better but it was certainly more enjoyable than the sequels
Unless that movie ruins everything in which forget all I said I'm wondering what's next for our big monster heroes because we know we're going to see them both in the next movie. Of course only Godzilla matters to me and we're getting plenty of stuff in the coming years. I don't know what to do with this fact I still remember the long hiatus. Being so spoiled is new to me.
Toho loves to work with Legendary, whcih I hope means less interference for no reason, and everything is renewed. So we'll be getting both Toho and Legendary movies in the future. But if the movie is good and finishes whatever they were trying to say after KotM I'd be fine with just that one movie to finish the series.
Looks like it's not the case anymore. There's a sad possibility that it's gonna be another Kong movie with Godzilla cameos here and there to show how everybody loves Kong and shits on Godzilla. Right after GVK I could only think of worst case scenarios but back then we didn't even know there will be more movies. This series cheated its own death.
Other than the airport scene zero issues with Godzilla's screentime. Every second he's on screen is precious and I like knowing he's out there even if he's not in the scene but after that movie we no longer need to keep the mystery. KotM was ok, even gave Godzilla an arc of sorts, GVK wasn't kind to him but next time he better gets a lot of attention and more scenes with him as the POV character.
it's kind of boring and the film's pacing is stilted because of Cranston character's death and the movie basically restarting from the son's perspective after that. the monster fights are pretty cool.
>the entire marketing campaign for it was bryan cranston bait when he dies at the beginning >story follows some who cares dipshit for no reason >action scenes are just some scales or an arm flying in pitch black or total smoke
It was literally one of the worst movies I ever saw. So fricking boring I forgot it the second I walked out.
It' good to see how many new fans were first introduced to the series through these movies and it made them watch the classics. Especially KotM was a huge success in this regard far more than GVK for some reason.
It was pretty mediocre (actually one of the most difficult to watch Godzilla movies IMO), but thankfully the legendary Monsterverse keeps getting better and better with each new entry.

There are plenty of villainous monsters they could use, but I think they just wanted to get the “big five” from Toho’s cast of characters out of the way in case future movies weren’t viable.
This. I wanna see Bagan get his first fricking movie already. They're probably not getting away with doing the Super Godzilla transformation, so having him be an even bigger team up boss battle would be fine.
They wanted Gigan which can still happen at some point but maybe for now they don't want another cybernetic kaiju. Only if they do the alien invasion plot. Destoroyah is absolutely the best possible choice right now. And the only logical decision would be to make Godzilla the star this time.
Then make him the villain instead of an anti-hero this time. I guess Mothra would need Godzilla in the movie because she can't support her own big budget Hollywood movie. There can be more than one monster villain. So if they really want Godzilla and Mothra together they can still split them up and each handles their own villain. Or they reuinite at the end and they fight 2v2.
I always post my fan edit of the Godzilla/KotM/GvK in these threads for whoever is interested. Download is in the link of the YT video, it's the fight scenes cut together with the minimal amount of human plot just so it's not hard edits.
Forgot to add that it's 1h50 total for all 3 films combined. It's wild how great the fight scenes are when you chop out the random cuts to people on a sound stage flopping around on a set. You can tell they have these super long CGI shots of the kaiju fighting uninterrupted. That'd be a great directors cut, put the full kaiju only fights out.
>Toho will have an official Godzilla panel at SDCC on July 21st at 2:30PM. The panel will feature "A glimpse into new products and what's in store for Godzilla's upcoming 70th anniversary."
I expect to see at least the new design.
For that Toho movie that will take place int he 1940s. I just don't want it to be another remake of the 1954 movie and maybe it won't because it makes little sense to set a Godzilla movie during time period when the cities are already destroyed without Godzilla's help unless he plays a different role in the movie.
>For that Toho movie that will take place int he 1940s.
Imagine if the premise of the movie is that Godzilla attacks America in 1945 and completely turns around the course of the war.
The scenes with Godzilla nevertheless save this movie. He's used sparingly and but they did a good job with the perspectives to show his size. This movie woulda worked better if they cut down the filler shit with kickass and that olsen chick.
2014 starts with 40 miners falling to their deaths. There was going to be a scene with a dying miner talking about how humanity raped the earth, and mother nature gave birth to a demon (the mutos). But it got cut.
I wonder if there are some elements from the Monsterverse movies that will become the new standard. Talking mostly about lore-related stuff such as Rodan actually having volcanic-related powers instead of just being called Fire Rodan.
If it's not made in Japan, it's not a godzilla movie. It's like champagne, anybody can make their own and call it champagne, but unless it's from Champagne, France, it's not real champagne
How many times did he use the same analogy? And if I remember before that he said it has to be practical and not CGI which I assume he already dropped. Well that notion change irreversibly. Also Western take on Godzilla will co-exist with Japanese one it's the new reality of the franchise that he has to come to terms with.
Still like his Godzillathon even if it's horribly dated and full of errors. His pick of 5 Godzilla movies for beginners is interesting even if I only agree with maybe 2 of them.
Wasn’t his logic behind his top five recommendations for newcomers based on which monsters appear? Like he picked one movie with Mothra, one with King Ghidorah, one with Mechagodzilla, etc.? I understand why he would do that, but it’s kind of weird to recommend something like Godzilla vs Kong Ghidorah or Terror of Mechagodzilla to a complete beginner. If a normalgay asked me how to get into Godzilla, I would just tell him to watch all the Legendary and Reiwa movies, since new movies are the easiest for normies to stomach. Then I would tell him to just start at the beginning with Godzilla 1954 and go from there.
I'm assuming American movies are easily available and accessible so we can forget about them. Shin is not a typical movie but it's good so perhaps worth recommending as one of the five but it's also quite similar to the 1954 movie which is required viewing. It'd also add Mothra vs. Godzilla because of its sheer quality and then I don't know. If we have to pick five that provide the most all-encompassing Godzilla experience it should be at least one Heisei like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla from 1993 which has both Mecha G and Rodan so that's 4 out of 5 of the most important Toho monsters. But Heisei is pretty serialized so watching just one may get confusing. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is a good pick for beginners but her also added Tokyo S.O.S. and you kinda have to do that because it's the immediate sequel. You can write a paper about the correct strategy of introducing people to Godzilla.
I was positively surprised that Godzilla is the hero not the villain. I don't know if there were any leaks before that I found out about it in the theatre. His role in this movies and how it divides the monsters into basically two groups felt pretty refreshing.
I was dating this cute redhead when that movie came out. She was one of those girls that was curvy but not the curvy fat people claim. Nice ass, nice breasts, freckles and green eyes. I remember watching the movie and having butterflies sitting next to her. Unfortunately, I was a mess at the time. I did drugs and drank and she was this nice cute girl, who thought on the surface, I just “like to party”. When the movie finished, I drank a tall boy at my truck, took her home and fricked the shit out of her. Then she went home, and I went to the bar and fricked some 5/10 dumpy bawd. She found out about it and never talked to me since. I never forgot about her, and it pains me that I fricked it up.
Still the best one. I had no reason to expect this to be any good. And yet it is the only film I've been to (been to a lot of them) that got a fricking standing ovation from a packed theater.
Kino.

Watch the first Godzilla movie. He literally doesn't appear until halfway through the movie.

Quads of truth have spoken.
There were some grea shots in the movie
>Got Gidhora and Mechagodzilla
Theres no real threat left besides Destoroyah in terms of rivalries with Godzilla.
His time will come right? They cant just detonate the Oxygen Destroyer and not deal with the repercussions.
There are plenty of villainous monsters they could use, but I think they just wanted to get the “big five” from Toho’s cast of characters out of the way in case future movies weren’t viable.

The fact that the 2021 movie is filled with 2014 references shows how good Gareth Edward’s movie is.

Most deceiving Hollywood trailer made, visually kino though
It was okay. It could have been better.
It's the best monsterverse film. Sad that the series has gotten worse with each installment.
Flawed movie with some really good moments and set pieces but also completely revitalized the franchise and made it popular again
The movie should've revolved around Bryan Cranston

Godzilla 2014 is the most violent monsterverse movie
I think Skull Island is most brutal. For a fantasy PG-13 movie it shows some things that go really far.
Not really.
2014 starts with 40 miners falling to their deaths. There was going to be a scene with a dying miner talking about how humanity raped the earth, and mother nature gave birth to a demon (the mutos). But it got cut.

It was okay. Too dark to see shit, not enough lizard action. Would've made more sense and been better if the son died instead of Walter.
did you see it in theaters? it wasnt dark there
I did see it in theaters and it was probably a bit better but still too dark. Even if it was bright as shit still not enough actual monster action.
Hate the design and he's too big
The hype/misdirection from the trailers was more entertaining.
I was positively surprised that Godzilla is the hero not the villain. I don't know if there were any leaks before that I found out about it in the theatre. His role in this movies and how it divides the monsters into basically two groups felt pretty refreshing.
It was good. A good movie to watch and enjoy. that's it.
You ever thought about not being a piece of shit? Also, she’s probably fricked up in the head if she’s dating an addict like you.
Still the best one. I had no reason to expect this to be any good. And yet it is the only film I've been to (been to a lot of them) that got a fricking standing ovation from a packed theater.
Kino.
