I usually don't watch films featuring a mostly female cast, but I broke that rule to watch this, assuming the sci-fi twist would make up for anything else.

I was wrong. It was awful. The women were whiny any b***hy and incompetent, yet their emotional meltdowns and issues were framed as important and meaningful.

    It's a sci-fi movie made for women. It's bad.

If you haven’t done shrooms or LSD and you’re going to understand this movie. The visuals, the tone, the music, the refraction of all lifeforms and DNA, the shot of Portman gazing into the mandala of infinity of the “alien” is all veeery psychedelic.

I really like the weird shit, but the whole personal drama thing felt flat, it tries to connect both but it never does it properly, even worse because the horror really outshines the drama but the whole you can tell the director cared more about the drama. Like imagine if in The Thing MacReady had cheated on his wife and a bunch of the film was abiut his guilt and how the thing is a metaphor for that, it would be a worse film for it. Also the ending was bad, im sorry but you have this weird horror and then the climax is a dance about a women who feels bad for cheating, its just stupid.

A really messy adaptation of a so-so books. So in the same package you get the issues the book had and the own problems of the movie trying to adopt it. This makes it incredibly frustrating when I could spot where they were trying to salvage things from the book, but by never mentioning the context, they only made them worse.
I have no idea how the movie works without the book context, I assume poorly, since third of the important bits got trimmed out and it makes various character do stupid shit, while it made perfect sense in the context of the source material.

This movie filters so many on this board.

    >Main characters act moronic
The shimmer distorts time, reality, and matter-- which means whoever goes into it becomes mentally degraded and disjointed as they spend more time in it. It's loosely based off of H.P. Lovecrafts "Color Out of Space", and if you've seen the Nic Cage adaptation from a few years back, those characters all acted the same way.

    >Alien doesn't make sense
None of it makes sense, that's the point. The alien is supposed to be so alien it's beyond our human comprehension. Most movies that feature aliens feature aliens whose motivations are somewhat clear. For example, in ALIEN they're predators that want to kill and reproduce, in PREDATOR they are trophy hunters. What makes the alien entity in Annhilation and Color Out Of Space so terrifying is that it's so alien it might not even "want" anything, it simply "is".

      >Nic Cage adaptation
Frick off. The original story doesn't have any of the dumb shit in that movie. It's second only to the "Pickman's Model" 'adaptation' from the Guiermo Del Toro anthology as awful Lovecraft adaptations.

        >Story doesn't have the dumb shit from the movie
since you obviously haven't read the original story, read the synopsis on Wikipedia for Lovecrafts original story. It most certainly features characters that become mentally unglued and go mad, like lots of Lovecrafts stuff.

      >which means whoever goes into it becomes mentally degraded and disjointed as they spend more time in it
that's why the all female cast doesn't work at all. men becoming irrational and hysterics means something strange is going on, women doing the same is just yesterday and didn't add to the horror, only makes it more annoying to watch.

I somewhat agree. It was way more unsettling to Cage devolve from a calm loving father into a strange unhinged weirdo than it was to see the female crew in Annihilation fall apart.

they decided to stand guard in the middle of an open field and sleep on the watch tower instead of using the tower to guard as well.

This right here. Until it becomes self aware by consuming Hershlag. Who herself was the only one that understood what the alien was. So once it consumed her it understood itself and became self aware.

i get why the conglomerated the tower and lighthouse but the movie would be pure kino if they included it, still i consider the film to be kino

Yeah the weird tunnel thing with the fractal was supposed to be the tower and the mimic was the movies crawler. I actually prefer they changed the crawler from the book, what we got was a weird visual and some amorphous tentacle monster just wouldn't translate well to the screen. Lovecractian horror is a literary genre first and foremost.

Because the director flat out refused to take production notes telling him to dumb it down for mass audiences. Which is why said produces threw a hissy fit and only gave the it limited distribution and then dumped it on Netflix. I was fortunate enough to see it in all its theatrical glory though.

how I think the mission should've been handled is to prepare a naval vessel for CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) conditions, sail as close to their target as they can then disembark the scientific survey team and the escorting marine battalion, all outfitted with CBRN suits

It doesn't work. The shimmer isn't radiation, it's not a virus or a bacteria. And they tried sending professionals, sending Marines. It just doesn't work. I guess in the movie they're just sending suicidal people there because it's basically suicide and maybe some of them will find something.

The author is a devout nature freak on thunbergs level and the shimmer is just an analogy for humans unwillingness to alter the current climate path. That’s why so many characters in the books just run away without giving a shit and the only solution at this point is to just embrace the change that will come in our world even if it means the death of us.

i turned it off when all the dumb b***hes in this movie jumped into the water where their friend had just been dragged under by an unknown monster. women have LITERALLY no sense of danger but that didn't matter to whoever wrote this schlock because they just made sure the creature let them get their friend out of the water before the monster attacked again, where the main chick got the opportunity to show off her awesome weapons training. I thought it was moronic. The sets looked super fricking cheap too.

Jeff Vandermeer is one of the worst authors I've read, and I'm well-read. He can't write worth shit in any way. He's a total hack. The Southern Reach Trilogy is truly one of the worst things I've read. It was a mammoth pain to finish.

When they finally killed that annoying black lady boss character I was pleased - finally a good decision made! Then they brought her back to life!

All of the characters are loathesome, and the story rapidly became incoherent twaddle before even the end of the first novel. And it only gets worse from there.
