I see it as trying for the same goal as tomboys, but in reverse. Tomboys reject the often arbitrary limitations of gender roles without rejecting their own identity as women. Enby's reject their own identity as women by embracing the logic of gender roles, then claiming that they're outside them... by sticking to a different, easily recognizable set of roles (like the single shaved side for some reason).
