Its release didn't coincide with the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision. The writers also didn't deliberately make decisions with the script that they would have known in advance were going to awaken the sleeping giant known as /misc/ and fill it with terrible resolve to ruin the release in any way they possibly could.
What does it have that Snow White, Pinnochio, Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, the original The Little Mermaid, or all the Toy Story movies don't?

The ability of the script to stay on topic - a throughline - seems to be completely overlooked by modern critics in favor of gimmicks. Without it, the movie loses forward momentum, and it becomes frustrating and dull because your brain is always trying to separate what is important from what is frivolous. While there is a place for mumblecore movies, a traditional story is not supposed to feel like a real conversation. It's an editing down of events, dialogue, and ideas.
I don't care how simple the Super Mario Bros story is, I care that it's well-told. It is better written, and more specifically better edited, than Strange World and Lightyear.

The film is made with a little bit of passion for Mario stuff, but it's basically just a reference checklist. not really objectively good, the pacing is breakneck as they just throw setpiece after setpiece at you. It's basically a movie you just see once and then say "oh that was fun."
Meanwhile Strange Worlds and Lightyear are bereft of anything resembling a soul and also not even fun family movies. Like Mario at least had a modicum of care, the other two just feel like the bosses forced them to make it.
