Manga has great aftermarket value, if 75% is off then you can literally buy and sell for profit. Warhammer is likewise in high demand.

But modern comics are not worth even $1 (75% off). Try going to you LCS and trade in an older issue. You're lucky if you'll get a quarter for a book.

Basically takes the art from a manga and uses it to create a crude animation where you actually get to see things moving around. It works for well done manga because manga breaks down the action into smaller motions much more often, you largely couldn't do this with western comics because there isn't enough material to work with. You would just have Superman floating there frozen in mid-punch for 90 seconds as he monologues during the "fight". Meanwhile, pic related has no editing done to it, these are literally the panels of the manga in the order they are intended to be read.

this thread sucks but heres an answer:

    >Comics have always sucked and are now just mass produced under labels trying to sell off of previous success, Superman sat at the top with 600million + sold but has been going since 1938

    >Manga has become widly available and has been in multiple prints and languages, One Piece showed up in 1997 and is already at like 600 million.

Comics are a hard sale these days, mostly because the big hitters are a fricking mess with story lines and hard to get into, you cant really even just start from superman 1 and move your way up

also coomers, dear god give them 1 girl and theyll run an entire publication of a bad comic/series.

The actual answer is the cost. Who but upper class geeks are gonna buy a single issue of 22 pages for $5? You're pricing out the working and middle class doing that. The trades are also too short compared to the manga equivalent, so the cost of the former isn't justified either.

You know, the craziest thing is not that Manga got more popular, but that for the last 10 years, we had autist telling us that this was a nothingburger and that Japan could never outcompete Marvel™ and DC™ comics for sheer reason of being american.
It's really something to see people in real-time start avoiding reality just to keep in their head the status quo that happened when they were kids 30 years ago.

Comics became more concerned with preserving their increasingly outdated business model than were with making a product people want to buy.
You can look at a host of different cartoons, movies, video games, and so on featuring these characters that ALL do better than the source material. Its not that people don't like Batman or Spiderman, its that people refuse to buy Batman and Spiderman COMICS. Maybe its that the comics are low quality stories, maybe its that they are too expensive, maybe its that the LCS model simply isn't a place customers want to go. But the point is that the comics themselves are the least popular, least successful versions of these characters.

At this point, I genuinely wonder if you would have more success with removing the 'comic' portion and just publishing straight up books. As in, YA novels staring these characters with little to no art in them. People still read books way more than they read comics, would that be a viable way forward for these characters and their stories?

    Greed AKA capitalism.
The /misc/ tourists will cry about muh woke bogeyman but the truth is that comics have always been woke and manga is woke too, nazis have always been hated by everyone.
What changed is that corporations just keep getting greedier, cutting costs and trying to squeeze more money out of the proletariat.
Capitalism is a disease that's nearing the end of its life cycle and that's why comics are crumbling.

      >manga is woke too
lol. LMAO. That american trannies like manga doesn't make the source material to care about them.

Manga is full of stuff that the right considers woke, manga just isn't treated as having an agenda in the same way that western media is. Japan publishes more yaoi and yuri and genderswap stuff in a year that American companies will EVER publish. The difference is that manga typically makes that stuff because the author thinks it makes for a good story and its a passion project, whereas when american media does the same thing it comes off as forced and cringe.
I think a large part of that, though, is that so much of amercian media is adaptations and remakes, which creates a level of comparison and contrast that isn't present in the manga examples. If you made a mermaid movie with a black actress, no one would care. But when you do a remake of The Little Mermaid with a black lead, the fact that this is a change you intentionally made invites criticism and controversy. Changing the race or sexuality of characters in adaptation that was not present in the source material smells like bullshit in a way that simply isn't true for new and original works that would have what is essentially the same character.

          >Manga is full of stuff that the right considers woke
Manga is also full of stuff that woke types hate.
Largely because manga isn't like comics, insofar as there are manga made by all sorts of creators, from troony communists making a manga about social commentary about how society is transphobic to hardline right-wingers making a manga with anti-feminist dialogue and tones.
Pretty much anyone from any walk of life can get a manga published in Japan if someone thinks it's good enough, while in America getting published in the comic industry means doing the song and dance that's required.
Which is why you'll pretty much never see a modern comic made by, say, a farmer, but one of the most popular manga of all time was made by a woman who spent half her life up to that point working on a farm.

Has no one ever considered the fact that a comic book shop would have more american comic stock to sell off being based in america than it would either manga or warhammer kits? I mean my lcs has at least metric ton of comics and only 2 sections for manga. Of course it won't sell out as fast if there is more of it.
