there is a history in long running comedies with large ensemble casts for characters to disappear as it were for seasons at a time because the writers weren't coming up with jokes for them. and american dad has been away from certain settings for so long lots of characters seem to have gone away

It's like how to this day the most advanced "anime" parody/reference/joke you'll get in western media or animation is to the late 90's rendition of pokemon, speed racer, or if they're really spicy and WITH IT, DBZ.
I remember cartoons like Fairy Odd Parents, Robot Chicken/South Park and Kids next door doing pokemon/speedracer/DBZ spoofs but the last anime reference gag I saw was in Rick and Morty.
one short was a kinda just some ultra-violent ronin parody and another episode was making fun of Voltron and nother was just they used anime as a actual style for the entire episode and put everything in japanese. there was no joke and the episode was patricularly boring and played completely straight with none of the usual gags. it was just Rick and Morty but an anime.
one of the things that most stands out in my mind though when I think of the embodiment shitty anime parody "gag" is the Grand Theft Auto Robot Princess Bubblegum episodes and that dogshit show "Super Milk Chan"

Back then a handful of shows were big, now it's anime as an idea that's big and there's much more variety in what people watch so any parody is going to fly over the heads of those unfamiliar with whatever show they are spoofing
Death note works because it's big even outside normal anime circle and AOT kind of works because there's a decent guarantee anybody is at least somewhat familiar with the basic ideas.
Give it 10 years for precure to have a proper western audience of young girls and you will start seeing parodies of it in shows parents of those girls would be watching
