He clearly wasn't as invested in conquest as the rest and would most likely have tried to make peace

So what's happening when the Avatar comes back?

Aang awakes to a post-war world where tension is high but things are peaceful. Depending on how soon iroh resolves the war effort, Sokka and Katara might be completely different people, or if they're the same, their dad would forbid them from going on a trip with aang.

Aang's trip starts with a bumpy wall as his reaction to seeing the Airbender slaughter still goes on but nobodies there to comfort him. Probably wrecks the entire place and only leaves when he's super worn out.
If he's still going to the water nation in the south, aang is probably trained by either Pakku or any random waterbender who wasn't taken by the fire nation
His trip to the earth kingdom probably goes about similarly to canon, just with less fire kingdom thwarting. Aang and Toph probably become bros.
Aang's trip to the Fire Nation is.. a very bitter trip. Outside of Iroh being respectful, most of the citizens hate his guts. Aang probably gets taught by Iroh, now that I think about it.

He was cracking jokes about burning Ba Sing Se to the ground when he was laying siege to the city. Iroh had no qualms about conquest until his son died.

It was a joke, anon, in that same letter he talks about accepting the surrender of his enemy and how beautiful the wall is and how he thinks the city will be beautiful too. He even spared the Dragons and the Sun Warriors long before he was even a conquering general. I don't think he'd genuinely just burn the city to the ground.

You don't have to destroy a city to conquer it. The point was Iroh was not against subjugating the Earth Kingdom

    when does he become firelord?

Because he was supposed to. Because Dad decided to punish ozai instead of punishing him by killing his son who he doesn't actually care about.

Depends, he might continue the war or just end it after his son died.

He still wouldn’t be the fatherlord

He would be "slightly" better then Ozai. I'm assuming this theory is based off what if his son was still alive. The only reason Iroh is a good guy chad is because he experienced loss over his son.

If it's nice Iroh, he probably would be assassinated by his brother or dissenters who don't agree with his more peaceful approach.

Depends on the timing. He'd probably give up on Ba Sing Se maybe one final go, take Omashu to punctuate the end of the war without looking like he failed. Begin focusing on consolidating basically the entirety of the Earth Kingdom sans the capitol.
He'd likely try to find some peace terms with the North Water Tribe and subjugate the Southern.
He'd probably be a pretty good and peaceful Fire Lord though I can see his brother try to undermine him as weak for not wanting endless war and focusing on actually building on their newfound resources.

Iroh was seemingly always a "good guy" it's just the perspective in which he was a good guy was still an imperial general. Zuko was more or less a good guy before his banishment but he was still a Fire Nation Patriot who believed in what they were doing.

A boss fight between him and Aang would be kino
It would be so somber and mellow. Something closer to a western or samurai duel. Almost graceful. Aang coming out alive would be way more believable too, because Iroh probably can't will himself to kill a child.

his brother would try assassinating him or launching a coup against him.

if he managed to survive that and execute/exile his brother he would be a strategic warlord and would try taking Omashu and then Gaoling and most of the coastal regions of the southern continent of the earth kingdom. turning them into colonies. that would cripple the earth kingdom

If Iroh was Firelord I think he would still have his opinion on the war soured but for different reasons. Ultimately I think he would try to retain much of what was won during the war and reach an incredibly tense and unstable peace until Aang wakes up. He would be a deeply unpopular ruler but if Ozai wanted the throne he would be too proud not to invoke Agni Kai instead of using subterfuge.

    been fiddling with a concept of this nature for a little bit, some rough ideas;

    >divergence point is Ozai dying in a fairly mundane accident of some sort shortly after Azula is born(I'm leaning towards breaking his neck after falling down a flight of stairs)
    >due to this Lu Ten doesn't die and thus Iroh remains heir
    >Azulon ends up dying around the same time he does in canon anyways
    >with how close the return of Sozin's Comet is, Iroh mostly switches the war to a more defensive footing
    >various butterflies result in Aang never being awoken before Sozin's Comet returns
    >with the power of the comet Iroh is able to lead the Fire Nation to an easy capture of both Ba Sing Se and Omashu
    >Iroh proves to be even more capable of a leader in peace than he was in war
    >by the time Iroh passes away peacefully in his 90's and Lu Ten takes the throne all of the former Earth Kingdom has been peacefully integrated into the Fire Nation's empire
    >by the time of the reign of Lu Ten's grandson coinciding with Sozin's Comet returning again, raids and acts of piracy from the Northern Water Tribe result in the Fire Nation finally conquering the lone remaining polity in the known world not already subjugated by the Fire Nation
    >beginning in Iroh's reign and over the centuries new philosophies had emerged deemphasizing the superiority of either Fire Bending or of being from the Fire Nation home islands and instead emphasizing the superiority of the Fire Nation as a nation state and culture
    >by the time Aang does end up being awakened in the reign of Azulon III(the eighth Fire Lord to have reigned since Lu Ten), the known world has been unified under the Fire Nation for centuries, and there is peace between all it's peoples and all elements
    >what shall the Avatar do now?

      >what shall the Avatar do now?
theres nothing to be done, shit is done already.
at this point everyone accepted the status quo, maybe the world found a new level of development like never before.
Maybe Aang find anew home among fire people scholars who would see the avatar return as a blessing to bring back the air nomand nation

        >theres nothing to be done, shit is done already.
        >at this point everyone accepted the status quo, maybe the world found a new level of development like never before.
on the surface yes, though I imagine there would be some new issues(one thing I hadn't mentioned is that without the Avatar around to handle them the expanded Fire Nation has been dealing with various Spirit World Crises over the centuries), also as for where technology sits, I'm picturing that due to different priorities that Fire Lord Iroh had compared to Ozai in canon, and the butterflies that causes, so even though Aang wakes up somewhere between four and six hundred years later than he does in canon, technological development is a lot more stagnant compared to canon, so they're actually less developed than canon circa Korra times even despite the much larger amount of time that has passed
        >Maybe Aang find anew home among fire people scholars who would see the avatar return as a blessing to bring back the air nomand nation
        funny thing about that...

        >>by the time Aang does end up being awakened in the reign of Azulon III(the eighth Fire Lord to have reigned since Lu Ten), the known world has been unified under the Fire Nation for centuries, and there is peace between all it's peoples and all elements
        >>what shall the Avatar do now?
        Repopulate his people.

        >Repopulate his people.
so one concept for this I've been fiddling with is the idea that one of the Spirit World crises I mention above(this one would have happened within a couple decades of the Northern Water Tribe being conquered, perhaps directly related to that in fact), by the time that crisis had been resolved it ended up resulting in Air Bending emerging among the population again, though compared to the Air Nomads the techniques of the New Air Benders of the Fire Nation are quite crude and primitive even with the several centuries they've had to develop, there's been a couple "counter culture" attempts at reviving Air Nomad philosophies and techniques but with how little accurate information was still extant by this point about them the efforts haven't had much in the way of results, so Aang's return will probably have an interesting impact on that

          continuing

Would be funny if Aang woke up with the Fire Nation already ruling over the world and the remaining FireLord willing to have tea with him

          >Would be funny if Aang woke up with the Fire Nation already ruling over the world and the remaining FireLord willing to have tea with him
indeed Azulon III is actually quite relieved that the Avatar has been found(thanks to the South Pole being explored for the first time in centuries since it had been abandoned by the last remnants of the Southern Water Tribe shortly after the second passing of Sozin's Comet), as hopefully it'll mean that by the next passing of Sozin's Comet in a couple years Aang will have fully mastered the elements and reached his full potential as Avatar, as pretty much every passing after the second has resulted in some sort of Spirit World crisis, and Azulon III already has enough on his plate between having to deal with the emerging domestic threat of the Black Lotus Society(basically a KKK equivalent founded by Fire Bending and Fire Nation Home Islands supremacists), the Fire Nation having to deal with actual foreign polities for the first time in centuries after the discovery of the "New World" within the last couple decades, and rumblings from the Royal Astronomical Society about "mysterious eruptions" they've been observing via telescope on a neighboring planet...

in the meantime however Azulon III needs to keep the Avatar's return quiet, so he sends Aang off to stay with one of the cadet branches of the royal family "out in the boonies"(one of the more rural and isolated regions of the former Earth Kingdom), certain that his "nieces"(easier to say than cousins x times removed) Zuka and Azula will be able to keep Aang out of trouble while he trains...

          obviously shenanigans ensue of course
