What if it's actually good?

There's a possibility that it might be a good show.
Will Cinemaphile be man enough to admit that if its true?

I saw the teaser that you shills were creaming your pants over. It looked cheap and unimpressive. For example, Numenor. It's the height of Men's civilization. Third Age Gondor is just a sad, small echo of what Numenor was. Yet in the trailer, we see some shots of Ar-Pharazon addressing a crowd. The people look like extras from King's Landing in GoT, and the locale looks like some shitty greek courtyard. Presumably this takes place in Armenelos, the greatest, most beautiful city Men ever built. Yet it looks like shit compared to Minas Tirith.

This show is going to be a disaster.

And again typical overdramatic /misc/chud language, remember to mix it up a bit for next time and use some of the other classics like 'dumpster fire, dogshit, abortion or catastrophe', you know just so people can tell how super serious you are

          >Anyway how does this look like Dubrovnik?
Armenelos is located on a hill inland, not a river valley. Either that's not Armenelos or the show has completely ignored Numenor's geography.

if they had any big ideas they would have put them in a trailer by now. the Fellowship trailer was literally just explaining the plot setup for normies. currently we have no plot info at all, it's like there's no hook beyond "LOTR show". points to the same mistake Disneywars made.

the "the skys are strange" line didn't even sound like it was delivered correctly for any obvious conversational context.

LOTR is about short people travelling to throw a ring into a volcano.

this can't be about that it has to be about forging the rings or how they came to be forged or something. but how. what is the main arc of the story, what are the characters trying to do and why. etc.

Pretty much everybody uses swords or other weapons in Tolkien's stories, Gandalf typically fought with a sword, Melkor with a warhammer
There are the odd occasions where they don't and do some weird magic shit but that wasn't exclusively a female thing, Finrod has a magical singing battle with Sauron for instance

                Anonymous

They don't have rights to the other books but you don't need them to use what is written to help construct these characters for the show. Take Celebrimbor for example, because Tolkien wrote 2 or 3 versions of his character the show will create a composite. His actor spoke about this in an interview recently.

They are doing the same with Galadriel, she has 4 different backstories in the books and lots of stuff written about her character across various pieces of text so they bring all these things together to make her character in the show.

                Anonymous

in which of these backstories was she running around with a sword killing trolls or was shipwrecked while returning to Aman?

                Anonymous

I'm talking about using her backstories for characterisation, not plotting out episode by episode actions.
He characterisation is pretty consistent across the books but what she actually got up to over time is a complete fricking mess. Remember Christopher Tolkiens comment
                >There is no part of the history of Middle-earth more full of problems than the story of Galadriel

There are centuries where you don't really know what these characters got up to, so they are going to write her a story that includes the stuff we definitely know about her, like getting a ring of power and moving to Lothlorean (eventually)

                Anonymous

so you admit that her characterization and actions in the show are made up and have no basis in the works of Tolkien beyond the palest similarities
good for you, that "it was totally in the books guys but not telling where" shtick was pretty embarrassing

Read Unfinished Tales, there is an entire section about Galadriel including a description of her fighting 'fiercely' at Alqualondë against Feanor and sons who were slaughtering the Teleri

                Anonymous

That doesn't make sense, unless they will go against the Silmarillion narrative where Galadriel travels along with Feanor to the North after the kinslaying.

it won't be, the showrunners have said they were playing fast and loose with the source material. huge red flags there alone. Amazon can pay "experts" and influencers to say it's great but that doesn't mean anything because it's plain to see.

under the right circumstances sure you could display diversity in middle earth. however this is woke diversity and inclusion, which is always forced and disingenuous. another problem with woke writing and story telling. flat and boring characters who follow ridiculous tropes and cartoonish villains.

from everything I've seen and read, they don't care about the IP and are just trying to tell their own terrible stories by leaching off a popular IP. just look at Disney Star Wars, NuTrek or Halo.

I've seen franchise rape enough to see what's happening and Rings of Power is no different. you might like it and good for you both I won't subject myself to seeing yet another franchise violently raped.

      >But Amazon has never made a good product
Amazon don't make tv shows, that's not how the entertainment industry works
Each tv show and movie is made by a handful of producers who are typically not affiliated with the company, exceptions being a Feige or KK figure but they are the exception rather than the rule

They're plagiarizing Tolkien's work and creating a washed out, discount, filtered by the lenses of PC propaganda and other types of propaganda, product.
The values Tolkien personally held and the values he wrote about are not the values of the people filming nu-LOTR and are not the values of Amazon.

This is what it means when people discard "woke" products. There is a huge division between the values of original stories and their "woke" plagiarized commercial products. The Boys did that with present day american politics "le trump vs le good democrats" when it was actually about things like "power corrupts" not subhuman american politics.

      NOPE.

It cant be "good". It can be "pretty". It can be "entertaining", but it wont be a loving adapation of the source material, nor will it be a visionary attempt at creating places weve never seen.

It will be a ideologically driven political product. Written by ideologues, who are creatively and intellectually incapable of separating art from their own views. Produced by corporate shills that are throwing money to boost prime subscriptions by appealing to the least common denominator.

Something that is made without passion, can never inspire, or be art. Its a pretty product that will disappoint on all levels and the only emotion anyone will feel is: "What could have been".

if i were a lotr superfan(i liked the movies and the book is great if you're a kid, but i'm not a hardcore fan) i would legitimately get excited about it. It looks great and has good writers behind it.

meanwhile star trek fans get one slap in the face after the other
ent crap, disco crap, picard crap, strange new worlds crap, lower decks crap, the list goes on. You only had hobbit movies to swallow and now you're getting something that will probably be at least good. If there was an upcoming star trek show that looked that promising, i would literally jerk off to that fact alone. It's been 21 years since good star trek show.

slightly better, but still unwatchable. Dropped them both after s01e01. But they at least had decent production values and some acting here and there. Pilot to orville looks like amateur youtube productions.

it gets better. it seems like McFarlane had to pitch the show as Family Guy in space to get it greenlit, but it quickly stops with the cringe jokes and develops into a proper ST ripoff

The first episode of The Orville is by far the worst. It get progressively better after that and by the 2nd season it's basically TNG-lite.

Orville is hit or miss. It has great episodes and shit episodes. They seem to also have a lot of episodes dedicated to Bortus and his homosexualry.

              >Orville is hit or miss. It has great episodes and shit episodes
I don't disagree. And is ST any different? TNG had plenty of stinkers in the early seasons. All I was trying to say was that the show gets better as it goes along. The 1st season is basically Family Guy Trek with a few good episodes. 2nd season they start to dial back the humor and make it more like TNG. By the 3rd season they drop the humor entirely and it's a full on ST show wearing a different suit.

I don't know what story they could possibly tell that will interest me in this universe, I love the LOTR movies but the lore of the series is pretty stupid, I view it more as a metaphor than anything (the smallest good can defeat the ultimate evil, never give up, the corrupting influence of power and of men, etc) so going into the lore, I just don't care
Also the characters look shitty and the show in general looks woke, probably written by boring leftists
I will however watch the show because Galadriel is cute. I expect less than nothing. I would be shocked if I thought it was good. I think it's just going to be boring because I won't care, and everything will feel fake and I'll be unable to get immersed in it

Even disregarding the social justice politics and how it’s hampered creative freedom, you only have to look at the state of the industry. Unlike the past, where the barrier to entry was low, now you pretty much only get a job in it with very particular connections, degrees from the right colleges, and they only want young writers who are cheap.
What do young college graduates know about the majority of stories they’re tasked with telling? There’s no life experience, no dynamism, no emotional awareness. It’s well-off, politically acceptable, young writers who will take pennies for work that’s produced on a fast timetable. Even if they tried to deviate creatively, this would present financial risks studios aren’t willing to make.
Everything is against this turning out well, so it would be more interesting to find out what went right, if it happened to. Of course nothing is ever certain, but it’s shortsighted to act like it’s equally possible for it to be good as it is being bad.
After the Writer’s Guild strikes, especially in 2008, the industry started selecting for cheap, young, malleable writers. It’s just smart business, but not good for quality.
Everyone who replies will point out “but good stuff came out after 2008 you’re moronic.” Yes I am, but I’m also aware that change like this isn’t immediate.

Jackson's trilogy received its own share of bashing before and after release, people just don't know that or already forgot. Jackson ain't a saint here, people just give him green pass because nostalgia or because they are not well acquainted with the books.

Just move on people, LOTR will be entering more and more public domains every decade, you probably could make your own trilogy in China right now or in a couple of years (50 years after author death, which is next year?). Yes, this opens the door for absolute shitshows, but also great works.

        Anonymous

Jackson’s trilogy was universally acclaimed and rightly so because it was a fantastic, epic visual story that took what it needed from the source material while still providing an entertaining tale for those unfamiliar with the story and for those who knew it’s every nook and cranny at the same time. It’s a relic of a bygone era

There's about 2 pages in the appendix of LOTR they're allowed to adapt. They cover a few thousand years.
The writers reponsible for having to fill in the gaps with anime original content have no real credentials to speak of.
This was never going to be good even if they were trying to be faithful to the material, which they clearly aren't.

They already don't give a shit about LOTR lore, so it's not gonna be good.

They're making this show in the same vain as GoT: subversive to the high fantasy genre. You can't do that with LOTR because they invented that shit.
