Depends on the part of europe. It *would* be boring if it was just generic "medieval" slop or even greek stuff, but imagine Finno-Ugric Water Benders.

How about the Enlightenment era? Your antagonist could be a Napoleon type of guy who's a revolutionary but also wants to run everything. Aang's a gypsy.

How are you supposed to utilize bending which was heavily rooted in Asian martial arts and philosophy?

Tie it to religion/magic. Traditional Asian martial arts is all mysticism anyway. Benders would be something like paladins or druids depending on the type of bending.

Could actually make for an interesting story if the Fire benders are the notVatican and trying to suppress all other forms of bending.

        >It's another Not!Catholic Church is evil story
Too much of a cliche for my taste

I think associating bending with religion can work. The Avatar returning could be less of a reincarnation and more of a Second Coming. Maybe ordinary benders' abilities (like healing people, controlling certain aspects of nature, conjuring certain things, or even smiting people with lightning) are considered to be miracles. There's probably a way to do this without it being annoyingly Christian, right?

I dunno, Paganism? But that might make the Fire Nation look like it's Christianizing the other nations.

            >Roman Empire
            militarist Sun(fire) worship
            >Greece/Nords
parallel water worshippers, warm and icy aspects
            >everyone else
            earth worship centered on plants

Air would be nomads with the biggest temple being in the Alps. War began when fire coptured and razed it.
Secondary temples can be in Black Sea and Scottish highlands.

It wouldn't be Avatar, it'd just be a story about the next true King of Britain traveling the lands under Mordred's control in an effort to find Excalibur and the Wizard Merlin, while at the same time rebuilding the Knights of the Round Table.

Sounds interesting to think about. What would the inspirations for each element be?
    Water - Finns
    Earth - Germans?
    Fire - Byzantine?
    Air - ... Papal States?

      Fire-Ottomans
      Water-Venice
Air-various Crusader States(Livonian, Teutonic, Malta, Cyrpriot)
      Earth-HRE

Oh, that's a good one for fire. I feel like the crusader states are a bit too far from the Air Temples to be used, though

Water should be Nords based on the location. Copenhagen works as a canal city.

        South pole: Iceland/Greenland (backwater places)
North pole: Mainland Scandinavia (more urban)

How are you supposed to have Western world-style Avatars when reincarnation is an Eastern thing, India and China etc.

        Anonymous

Beliefs in reincarnation have always existed in Europe, going all the way back to the ancient Greek concept of palingenesis. I'd imagine a European Avatar would probably be based on gnosticism instead of buddhism.
