George Washington was, by most accounts, a competent officer and planter. The Continental Congress selected him to lead the army because he was well known and popular. He got his ass wrecked in the French and Indian War at Fort Necessity and was kinda disgraced. But his true legacy is how loyal his men were to him. He single-handedly prevented a military coup when the congress couldn't pay soliders and officers after the war. He wasn't a great president, but he was a good general. He became the leader the nation needed in the moment, and was held in high esteem by the majority of Americans.

also of importance he refused increased power and titles offered to him several times, despite people begging for it. he basically established the two term limit for a president

imagine if he decided to be president until he died, and we had presidents who acted like the senators who stay in office for 30+ years.

He was a pragmatic man. He did understand the need for pomp and ceremony, but didn't relish the idea of an American sovereign. His character was very formative for American leaders going forward.

Slavery in America is tricky. It started with indentured servitude of criminals and dregs from England, Ireland, and Scotland, and then progressed to the American model of slavery of African people. It has been a sad, bloody conflict ever since. And the legacy of it still poisons the nation now, in the 21st century.

correct assessment, it also explains why we've had such complicated race relations throughout the decades

its really a shame because America would have been SO much better off if the trans-atlantic slave trade had never happened

Tragically, it was economically expedient. And I suppose nobody thought about the misery, death, and bloodshed that would result from the whole terrible business. We have the benefit if hindsight and history. People in 18th century America didn't.

The views of the founding generation and the civil war generation were very different. Most of the founding fathers saw slavery as an evil but were too cowardly to end it, so just said "well it'll die off eventually." But by the time of the civil war that fiction had eroded and they said that slavery was a good thing and reinforced natural racial hierarchies. Texas' declaration of secession for instance lists one of its reasons for leaving America as congress undermining the natural supremacy of the white race over the Black race. That would absolutely never have been said by someone like Washington. The US constitution makes several obscure references to slavery, but never uses the word slave. The CSA constitution had no such qualms and was very open about the fact that it was a document intended to create a slave society.

a key difference is that keeping the institution of slavery alive was the chief motivating factor for southern secession. The US revolution could at least point to better things they were fighting for like personal liberty and representational government.

during the civil war both the union and confederacy saw washington as the platonic ideal.

washington had a way of staying neutral in just a certain way that both slave abolitioners and slave owners believed he would be on their side.

It's pretty funny how little movies about the Revolutionary war the mutts made.
It's like 0.1% Revolutionary war, 0.9% Civil war, 4% Vietnam and then 95% WWII.
