Jacob's ladder was SO fricking good until the whole "Vietnam vets organizing against the government with Jacob" subplot was introduced. Also, the twist ending where Jacob was dead the entire time felt like a slap in the face. For me, Jacob's ladder will always be a movie with a great concept that was poorly executed and ruined by the depressing ending.
It inspired Silent Hill though, so...neat, I guess.
Literally the exact same plot, except without it turning out that he was dead the whole time. It really saddened me that he went through a real hell in the afterlife, suffered through hell in the real world, and then the reward for all of his suffering was actually being dead in both the afterlife AND real world.
Fricking bullshit, man. Who thought that would be a great ending?
The twist ending is the whole point of the movie. Dude in purgatory drifting towards hell but eventually landing himself in heaven. The plot does ruin the horror elements of the movie though

Any movies that cover the sudden appearance of a unholy thing breaking through space, just to frick with you specifically? And I mean the plot has nothing to do with this it just happens and everything devolves into schizo fear.
It's shot like a documentary, but you know it's not an actual documentary, and once that idea becomes fixed, it cannot be scary. Movies work because of immersion, but when the thing is masquerading as something it isn't, it breaks the immersion.
But movies aren't pretending to be anything but movies. A documentary is supposed to depict reality. The movie in question is pretending to depict reality, and I can't take that seriously when I know they are lying to me. When you watch a normal movie, the movie isn't pretending to be anything but fiction. When you are watching a fake documentary, you are constantly reminded that it isn't a real documentary, which breaks the immersion.

Except a lot of my other favorite horror movies, like Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Blair Witch Project, also pretend to be real. This wasn't an issue that ever crossed my mind while watching the movie.

Wrong, BWP is a 'found footage' movie and not a documentary-style movie. There is a continuity in the footage, which makes you forget about the gimmick and put it into the background. Whereas Mungo is constantly switching over to interviews with people, which makes it painfully look like a documentary at all times, and makes you cringe.

Didn't say that, I said it claims to be real. BWP puts much more effort into portraying itself as something that actually happened than LM does.

Sometimes I admit I begin arguing genuinely, and then continue defending my position despite valid points from the other party, just to see if they buy into my argument. Other times I deliberately insert a pernicious fallacy into my argument which can easily drive people mad because it forces them to think critically, and explain to me through reductio ad absurdum why I am wrong. Those are some of my most jovial moments on here.

I didn't find funny games disturbing. I wanted to watch a B-level horror flick of a family getting tortured and I got an insanely suspenseful subversive daytime scary. Was pleasantly suprised honestly. His other movies suck though, yeah.
>watching french films
anons don't tell me you fell for it
The only good french movie is The Young Girls of Rochefort and that's only because its pure upskirt kino
I saw picrel for the first time in over 20 years last night and it's god dang kino jodi foster is unironically the best thing about it, they wouldn't make a character like bill these days
It's what every movie made nowadays starring "young woman who has to deal with bullshit in a male dominated world" wants to be. Back in the 90s they made a ton of movies based on novels and many of them were kino. Novels capture characters much better than scripts churned out by coke-addled liberal israelites, most of the time, and the 90s capitalized on this.

>Actual real snuff movies are a myth or straight up banned everywhere.
Why do people say this? It's implying that no one films themselves killing someone else. This is obviously false. ISIS videos, one man one ice pick, one man one hammer, etc.
the myth of "snuff" is explicitly a video commissioned by an anonymous patron for pure sadism. Cartel beheadings don't count. it's a myth because if you're good enough at opsec to the point where trading murder vids for monero would be a viable money-maker, there's a million other more lucrative, less fed-attention-getting ways to get that money.
>the myth of "snuff" is explicitly a video commissioned by an anonymous patron for pure sadism

I use my gf's sensibilities as a good indicator for what is disturbing because I'm completely de-sensitized and she is almost as bad as me, but not quite. Salo wasn't disturbing. It played like a dirty Monty Python sketch. My gf and I watched it and she thought it was as funny as I did. The only movies that my gf genuinely couldn't watch were Aterrados because there is a part early on that genuinely scared her and she didn't want to keep watching it, The Poughkeepsie Tapes for some reason, and The Holy Mountain because she just thought it was moronic. We watched this for example and both found it funny in an American Psycho sort of way. We watched Lake Mungo and she was pretty much neutral to it. She gets pretty consistently disturbed by shit like I Am Jazz and other actual gore.
Popeye. The 1988 one. Shelly Duval singing about how "big" Bluto was, is more disturbing than you could ever imagine. The entire movie is twisted and the people in it are completely fricked. Wimpy for example kidnaps Popeye's kid for a bag of hamburgers. No questions asked. The horror kicks in when you realise it's all perfectly recreated, on point, and completely canon. This movie is completely and utterly baffling.
