I still can't understand the American Dad staff. They know they're working on a fukken MacFarlane, and yet they managed to make it funny for years while mixing in these strangely earnest music sections. They easily could've just made a simple parody, but instead it's a genuinely intriguing pulp space epic. Hell, even when they do simple parodies as a premise, they go above and beyond
It's a shame that the show has really one to pot in recent years
MacFarlane provides voice over he's not a writer which is why its funny
NTA. I started watching Family Guy and they use some of the exact same jokes, but for some magical reason the jokes are only funny on American Dad.
Right but the thing is they're still working for what is still considered a MacFarlane cartoon. I know he's not in charge, the point is that they still put actual effort into what's gonna be seen at a glance or otherwise be associated with lazy, cookie-cutter production and humor. It's just one of the last places you'd expect to find it, and the fact that so rarely do you ever see a specific face attached to what make American Dad good just hammers in the inexplicable nature of it even further.
Like just because it's not MacFarlane doesn't mean it'd suddenly be good. The fact that it was good for so many years despite being in the MacFarlane family is crazy
MacFarlene hasn't been a writer on Family Guy for most of its existence either he stopped writing Family Guy episodes in 2005 he just does the voices just like with American Dad
McFarlane always said that he didn't get the show. It's great because he's just there to act and produce for the most part. There's other people actually running the show.
McFarlane has never written a funny gag. He doesn't have the talent for jokes beyond setups and punchlines. He is also too preoccupied with commentary and relatable humor. Meanwhile American Dad is written by people who can do things like think of funny situations and create complex characters to experience them.
Compare how the "complexities" of Family Guy characters usually amounts to them acting opposite of their flanderized selves, where in American Dad its more about their personal history and their relationships with other characters. Haley has changed from a hippie activist to a liberal wage slave, but still acts true to her character. Meg now is just Meg acting like an ugly girl with BPD instead of a vapid teenage girl.
The killer hot tub song was dope as frick too. American Dad is too good for this world.
