What is up with the way the True Detective series is treated.

What is up with the way the True Detective series is treated. The first season was very well received, huge success, so unsurprisingly they made a second one. But then that one bombed and they didn't make any more for a while. But then they decided to go ahead and make a third one. Then that bombed too. So you'd think the series would really be dead for sure but nope, here they come with a fourth season. If any other series had this many bombs they'd have given up on it years ago.

And the weirdest thing is, it's an anthology series so it's not like there's some unfinished storyline that fans are desperate for them to address. Each season is its own self-contained story so even if the show flops, it's not like you're left on a cliffhanger. So the fact they keep bringing it back for more seasons is truly mindboggling.

The problem with the true detective show runners is that they're too dumb to understand that the majority of their audience were attracted by the occult/supernatural elements and dark conspiracies, so they keep trying to make the newer seasons into normal whodunnits with a gimmick, which nobody really cares about.

        Anonymous

Wrong! The real reason people liked it is because the first season starred two white guys. That’s what you need for an action series. Then next season they had a woman and a gay. Then after that a black. Now it’s the chocolate vanilla swirl scissor sisters. You need WHITE MEN for an action series. East asians can work too but you have to be careful.

my pet theory is that in the first season nic pizz felt upstaged and outshined by two things: the supernatural elements (which were not his, he literally lifted the ideas and images from robert chambers and karl edward wagner, plus all those ligotti quotes he stole to make rust seem badass even if at the end he did not have his heart in it), and by the style and direction of cary fukunaga (which, again, was not his). so for the next season he decided to overcompensate: he leaned entirely on his own writing and hired multiple directors so that he wasn't upstaged by any single one. and it backfired because he's not good at writing mysteries and the season lacked that unified style that made the first one stand out

          Anonymous

Honestly, this is always my go-to as to why season one was great. Nic wrote his story, which was really character driven, and Fukker added something really special—which funny enough Nic didn’t agree with but who fricking cares. It was a good pairing which was lost

          Anonymous

          >so for the next season he decided to overcompensate: he leaned entirely on his own writing
It wasn't even his own writing, most of the plot and the character conflicts was lifted from 3 different books by James Ellroy. I still don't understand how he didn't get sued.

When did the small screen renaissance end? everyone wanked themselves silly during the 2010s about how good tv was but now it's absolute slop, when did anything of quality start running out?

          Anonymous

Everyone gave up when they realised the the big shows had the same flaw as the slop from the noughties such as lost: too many writers and directors with no actual planned story. With initially successful adaptions such as TWD GOT The Terror and original storylines such as True Detective everyone thought it was changing. Both TWD and GOT diverted from the sauce material and nose dived in quality. The smaller series were successful so people tried to milk the name and also decried the white male casts, creating follow up slop.

two competent, experienced detectives encounter a dark/satanic element that has the backing of the elite, done in a neo-noir style with some fantastical elements. Simple

the problem is that Hollywood is leftarded and leftards can't pass up an opportunity to subvert something popular, making it their ideological vehicle. They also hate the audience so they go out of their way to sabotage the formula and deny the audience what they want , see

There is no good female genre. They are incapable of creating something worth seeing. So they need to steal male ideas and frick them up so that they can call it original. Through a poverty of talent they are forced to steal and corrupt

Lack of talent. Corpo women are social climbers who care more about how their achievements influence people's perception of them rather than the achievements themselves. They attach themselves and their shitty ideas to something with cultural credentials, since it's free marketing and name recognition. They get off on the fantasy of millions of people admiring them, for example see the email girls making tik-toks of their daily life at a big name tech companies, where they just eat yoghurt and shit.
No matter how many college degrees they still have the mentality of a nerd grl twitch thot.

OP, they keep thinking that because it's an anthology series they get a clean slate every season and can just "try to get it right this time", except they're fricking terrible writers and have no clue why people loved the first season so much. it's female focused media written mostly by a woman so the usual pattern is to make all the men useless, stupid or evil. the only nice guy (the only guy who is portrayed in a positive light during the first episodes) will be the final bad guy in the "twist" end.
and the true evil will be toxic masculinity or something like that.
    that's my prediction.

they don't usually just focus on women, almost all of the time they have to portray themselves as better, superior, morally better, stronger, smarter than men / white people etc. i'm guessing this is because of their own insecurities in real life but i'm not a psychologist
anyway, beyond the trailer reviewed the season and said the ending is out-of-nowhere femenist (but that it does have a point) and expects it to stirr up complaints from some of the bad crowd. so i'm probably right

even if you don't consider how wrong, racist and sexist is woke writing, it's also fricking BORING and PREDICTABLE. a straight white male literally can't be good anymore. a black lesbian will never be the secret villain. she will never be wrong about anything.
how the frick do you write good stories when you have limits like this? how do you surprise the audience?

They can, they just can't be competent or have more meaningful screen time than a woman or minority character. See the Star Wars sequels for a typical example. Po is a good guy, he's just not allowed to do anything cool and is constantly emasculated and upstaged by the women around him.

I, the guy who claims to have the single greatest Joker origin story and perhaps best Batman story arch possible but refuse to publish since DC will own all the value, also have a fantastic True Detective treatment maybe half conceptualized. Instead of focusing on who I want to play the roles I spent all my energies on coming up with a very cool historical mystery that borrows from the spirit of Season 1. Sadly it does not have a supernatural element, but is a good enough deep conspiracy with lore rooted in the formation of America that I think true fans would approve. Slapping the interpersonal stuff on top of it wouldn't be difficult considering the subtext is already in the mystery itself for the relationship of the detective to hinge on a metaphorical philosophical disagreement about the Founding. My genius is a curse.

I will never publish any of it.

It’s sort of a Scooby Doo recipe that involves a series of ritual murders across the country that end up being an attempt to discourage people who’ve gotten close to the KGC hoard. But it’s not that simple. Because, like the pirates and their strange child fricking cult brought here before the Founding ran Louisiana this entire time, the very nature of America comes into question.
