Even if his statement was true, he still remembers Casablanca. I can't think of a way to frame it that isn't incredibly moronic

To be fair, Cascablanca was made in a time when directors were almost a non entity as far as public perception of a given film went for most people. Everything was really under the thumb of the studio system, and it wasn't till the 60's that you started to see great numbers of directors breaking out of that and developing the auteur reputation that directors are associated with today. In a post cinema world of streaming 'content,' I can see things easily going back to the older paradigm.

      not really true

        Anonymous

Yes it is. Directors were not household names at the time. Curtiz was one of the most prolific studio directors so his name is not known as an individual artist but he was still very accomplished

What's not true? A number of directors have talked about the iron grip that the studio system had in the 40s/50s. I'm not saying no films got made that had directorial vision, only the studios had a huge influence in shaping consensus at the time, and minimized the role of writers and directors as much as possible. It's not too far off from the way Disney, or the streaming companies work today.

          It's overexaggerated
certain directors were clamped down on, like Welles, but others, like Ford and Hitchwiener, enjoyed great freedom. All three of these men are GOATed either way.
The Hays Code was also better for film regardless, but that's a different matter.

            Anonymous

That's preposterous. New Hollywood gave Directors greater prominence. Hitchwiener and Ford were outliers compared to Spielberg, Scorsese, DePalma, Lucas, Romero, etc. to such an extent we are going to see Spike Lee and Tarantino and Kevin Smith movies *because* they directed them and for no other reason.

You're not doing anything edgy by pointing out israelites in Hollywood, but the fact that you think what you're doing is edgy is a sign that you're being controlled.

He has a good point though. Just make film for film's sake. Who gives a frick if you get famous off of it, or make piles of money. All the golden age stars are dead, their fame withers away. What remains is that they did amazing works for their time, whether that's remembered or not.
