What is your ideal Autobot team for a Transformers series? Who's on it?
I realize it's easy to say "all of them," so let's try to keep it between 5 and 10 members.

My team of Autobots would be rather normal I suppose. It’d have Optimus, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Ratchet, Wheeljack, Ironhide, Sideswipe, and Elita-1 and Arcee.
For me, it would be Optimus, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Ratchet and Strongarm. Ironhide and Elita play supporting roles, and occasionally make guest appearances.

Same Anon here, believe it or not, that is the cast of a Transformers series I've had in the back of my head for years. I used to have a full series bible for it and everything; I think it may have gotten lost several computers ago. My thinking is I was going to make more of a space opera type Transformers, still based on Earth but leaning more into the idea that the Cybertronian Civil War was galactic in scope, with the rest of the Autobots scattered in several bases throughout the galaxy while the Decepticons are in control of Cybertron and actively hunting the Autobots down with starfleets. I was going to feature multiple other alien races in the show, too, to really expand the scope of what's going on.
My Decepticon team, on Earth to match the Autobots, was going to be:
Megatron
Starscream
Shockwave
Thundercracker
Skywarp
Brawl
Blackout
Blitzwing
Sixshot
Soundwave was notably absent because he was going to be out in space commanding the main Decepticon fleet hunting the Autobots around the galaxy. I was going to have him matched up with Ultra Magnus, who commanded the Autobot fleet; they only had one fleet since they were starved of the ability to build capital ships without Cybertron. Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Mirage, and Red Alert were out in space with Ultra Magnus.
Of course everything was going to culminate with a final battle on Earth for the fate of the galaxy, with humans and other alien races joining in.
that sounds really cool! I've been crafting my own story for a while but never been confident enough to put it to writing.
this isn't really an "ideal team", but a more "unique" team that would be interesting to see. obviously, optimus to start. we rarely see any fliers other than jetfire, throw powerglide on there and have him double as our minibot rep instead of bumblebee. wheeljack is a popular character and an engineer, making him useful. same logic applies to ratchet - popular, and his role as the medic is important. trailbreaker would be a neat pick - powerful, good defense capabilities, but his lack of confidence would be interesting. maybe chromia for the "tough" one while also being fembot rep. so, basically:
>optimus prime (leader/wise, basically just the usual)
>powerglide (scout/kid-appeal, "bumblebee" of the group)
>wheeljack (engineer/"mad scientist", comic relief in a way)
>ratchet (medic/grumpy, old like in tfa)
>trailbreaker (tank, defense-heavy/casual, but mopey)
>chromia (brawler/combative, eager to fight)
half are characters that are already "core" characters in the series, half are characters that don't show up that often. i'd start off the series with this group, then add a few characters along the way. for additions, i'm thinking:
>sideswipe/sunstreaker (sideswipe's popular and a "cool" bot, but sunstreaker desperately needs some screentime )
>first aid (we already have ratchet, but i liked the plot in mtmte where first aid was being trained to take over ratchet's position because the latter was getting too old - could see something similar going on here, and permanently replacing a main cast member could lead to interesting stuff)
>another minibot other than bumblebee (just wanna balance stuff a bit, leaning towards windcharger and finally focusing on his potential, but his insane power is also what's keeping me from outright choosing him)
>another fembot (kinda the same reasoning as above, just wanna balance the team out a bit with another fembot. maybe nautica? she was pretty cool in mtmte, but we already have wheeljack so i'm not sure)
>Autobots

even the most simple beastformer is at least as comlex as the average vehicle-former at the time.
This is an Optimus from about a year before BW. pull down legs, flip down car hood,pull out arms. Optimus Primal's legs alone are more involved transformation
This wasn't a compare/contrast. Primal, God love him, in that gif just pulls off a mask, rolls up his sleeves, and spins his pelvis. It's the classic beast former sin of "legs turn into legs".
And believe me, I'm well versed in bad vehicle bots.
Primal's still my favourite good guy leader character in the franchise.

while Decepticons are: Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave (with Laserbeak, Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy), Cyclonus, Thunderblast, Knock Out, Quake and Incinerator (new insecticon character) with Shockwave, Barricade, Thundercracker, Skywarp and the Constructicons also joining in season 1)
i imagine it'll have a big cast or rotating characters.

oh i have plans for him, if anything he's more of the MC than Optimus is, its basically his story to ascend as next leader with Optimus still around.
Optimus, Jazz, Wheeljack...honestly, those are my only non-negotiables. Maybe to keep things spicy some not GEEWUN guys to fill out the roster. I like Bulkhead and Strongarm. Maybe i'd finally give Red Alert (animated style) the medic position so she actually gets to do something.

Yeah, cause it's the correct answer. All of them. This isn't the sort of property where you follow a cast of same specific group in each issue, this is more like classic GI Joe where you have literally more than a hundred good guys and at any moment any one of them could be the focus of the issue. I believe the term is "ensemble cast".
