      >so beloved
It was a flop and hated due to earrape sound balancing, grimdarkness, political satire that was at odds with both left and right wing Americans, and gore.
Also bad marketing is solely the reason it's underrated as it's no worse than any other slop on the market even today.

Written like this it sounds like a Dredd comic. But it really was anything but Dredd.

I meant no blacks inside women

      >

Because there was zero hype that lead up to it. It just kind of came out, caught everyone who was interested in it off guard, and was very different of what Hollywood was doing at this time -- it's a very British movie which is exactly what Dredd fans wanted. Despite being cheap (for what it is) it still had known actors who were well cast and it had the great sense to make it a small "typical" Dredd story instead of something that tried to make everything extra special and grand. The movie flopped and was seen mostly by hardcore fans, and those fans then spread the gospel online.

It's a perfect storm of circumstances for something like this to become an in-crowd hit. I didn't think it was particularly great yet absolutely loved it, because it did exactly what it "needed" to do, and it did exactly what I hoped it would do. I have never rewatched it and I wouldn't be surprised if it aged like milk.

      >it's a very British movie which is exactly what Dredd fans wanted.
      >"typical" Dredd story
      Oh frick off.
The original comics are British. This was Americana by someone who watches polarising American political slop 24/7. This was not what I wanted. Stallone is more Dredd than 2012.
There was no comedy. No fun. Nothing.
The only fans of this I know either never read a Dredd or jerk off to gore or only ever read IDW.

        >The only fans of this I know either never read a Dredd or jerk off to gore or only ever read IDW.
As someone who owns a handful of the early Case Files books and has read basically everything from the 80s, I can safely tell that you're full of shit, a homosexual and most likely a huge moron, too.

          Anonymous

As someone who owns a slew of case files, then you're going to have to tell me in which volume the series goes from "lol funny man go splat" and "haha, ironic ending worthy of a Greek play" and "lol, silly look alien is an animal person like Mr Toad from Wind in the Willows!" and "Police-critical people are silly and get killed by criminals in stupid ways!" to "RAPE RAPE RAPE. Gore. Dredd has to be lectured on what the law is. Blacks are oppressed gangstas with zombie knives it dey're kulture. Blacks aren't a minority that barely exist in the comics. We can't have fun anymore. Police um bad sweaty." so I know to stop reading by that point.

If I go to the reviews of the film,
          >The New Statesman's Laura Sneddon noted that Dredd passed the Bechdel test, lacking in sexism or misogyny and positively portraying female characters who are no weaker, more sexualised or shown less than their male counterparts.
Full of shit. Anderson wasn't sexualised in the comics and wasn't a moron. Anderson in the film was a moron who had to be given a special pass when she failed the test and her most memorable scene is a black man trying to rape her before she makes him imagine his boss, a woman, biting his dick off. Wow. Amazing. Genitals don't exist in Dredd's comics.
          >"a clunk-headed action picture"
          >"soullessly gritty"
          >"gray and ugly film"
          >"all tough-guy talk and humorless cynicism"
This is more an actual description of it.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised this is all boomers can create. A deconstruction of good things that makes nothing new and just says "The world's shit. Stop having fun. Be miserable."

So many words for saying nothing, and then quoting some moron review from a moron publication.
You're not arguing in good faith and you most certainly don't own a single Dredd comic.
I don't know why you are like this, probably because the film went against your moron headcanon or something.

              Anonymous

              You might be literally moronic.

So you've never read an old Dredd then?
Flip open your 01 case file. It's a sunbeam gun story.
Go a bit further and you'll find Dredd takes his helmet off several times. He even gets Star Trek style instant plastic surgery to pretend to be someone else.
He gives a free pass to a failed black Cadet because he showed initiative.
The robots are literally slaves because of their programming. There's a panel where someone says "You stupid woman!" because she causes Call me Kenneth to be booted up broken, and that's the last time sexism exists.
He goes to the moon and they're all space cowboys. He quits being a Judge and fakes being a hopeless loser to catch a criminal.

In 02 he goes across the Cursed Earth and if you have the uncensored comics they're making fun of American fast food.
He finds an alien that lost its family to a caricature of a Southern slave owner.

Swastikas are allowed to be portrayed on punk culture characters. Because it's silly, not because it's grim.

Dredd fights lizards from outer space, an unnaturally big tyrannosaurus rex, and werewolves. He becomes a werewolf.

There's a ripoff of the 50 Foot Woman. Of Frankenstein's monster. Of a lot of popular Sci-Fi.

A yokel has a dial in his head and he puts it to 4 when he gets angry so he can make people crumble to dust.

There's a space disease that makes people disappear part by part like it's Looney Tunes.

An entire set of comics seems to be written by someone who's too interested in Italian-American mafia shows.

There's a cult who worships the moon. There's a cult that isn't allowed to speak and their joke is literal navel gazing.

              >tell me in which volume the series goes from [...]
i'm gonna say case files 2 since that has both the cursed earth and the day the law died, or case files 5 that has both block war and the apocalypse war

Which is why I said FROM THE COMIC.

Action siege movies can deliver a really good time. Simple premise, complicated, interesting and engaging characters. Solid action. Horror siege movies are nice as well, like Night of the Living Dead

its almost a cheat code for a good action flick, look at the original assault on precinct 13, hell the remake too, their are so many examples of this, one of my favorites is 30 days of night, such a simple premise and not particularly well done but its an absolute banger, characters are trapped in insert isolated situation and must fight their way out of said situation = kino

Frankly I think with a few tweaks The plot of the Stallone movie would work If you keep Dredd and the other jusges more no nonsense serious.

the best Judge Dredd movie would combine some of the sensibilities of the Stallone one with the new. Keep it gaudy, perhaps toned down, with more functional armor. Keep the attention drawing codpiece. Really just combine both movies blend them and it could be perfect.

For a relatively modern movie that made a change. A well written female character too along with a strong male protagonist.

It was pretty respectful to the source material, gave you a good sense of place and atmosphere and it didn't try to do too much or get too quippy or whatever. Also it didn't have much in the way of overt political grandstanding like literally everything has now.

    Pretty easy actually:
    >simple story (get the villain, get to the roof)
    >villain was evil but believable (abused prostitute taking over drug lords empire)
    >violence was brutal but intentionally so to show the horror of living in MegaCity (cycle of violence endlessly perpetuating)
    >protagonist Dredd was an unapologetic badass. None of this moronic Christopher Nolan morality ("if I kill the bad guy I become just like him!!!" Like batman killing a guy blowing up buses and hospitals full of women children is the same fricking thing lol
    >guns were cool as frick. I think Dredds pistol is way better than 99% of Marvel slop weapons.
    >Olivia Thirlby was a great character and actor. Attractive but not too hot.

We will never see their likes again. Marvel slop has won. Its going to be just one wise-cracking, clownish iffective villain garbage cape movie forever.....

I just want three things to happen before I shuffle off this mortal coil: I want a Big Dave Film, an ABC Warrior film, and a Maniac 5 film.

I did hear long ago that Paramount snapped up the rights to Button Man, though whether anything will become of it, it's hard to say.

      >ABC Warrior
Maybe back in the 90s when it would have been mostly practical effects and studios were still financing weird shit like that (see Tank Girl and Death Machine).
Nowadays you'd get some highly sterilized slop like the Transformers movies.

It's just a good straight action movie where the good guy kills everyone, it's just like that brazilian movie about the Brazilian-FBI force where they kill a lot of "favelados" and its pretty realistic.

It was good because it didn't even have to be a Judge Dredd adaptation. It was a high-octane action thriller set in a confined space where 2 cops have to match wits and bullets against hardened criminals. No PC bullshit, no forced romances. It was just unapologetic violence and law enforcement; something you can't get away in this woke environment.

If it had been made today, Dredd would be crucified as "white supremacist fantasy" in killing poor distressed individuals who are forced to live in overfilled apartments who are just making a living while he serves as the jack-booted thugs for the establishment.
