No, you are overthinking the layers. Its a ball of dough that is filled with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni like a tiny stromboli (a calzone would be too messy, you would bite into it and immediately start leaking everywhere). The cheese and tiny amount of pepperoni on top is mostly cosmetic, the real meal is wrapped up on the inside.
