I grew up on it and so did a lot of boys. It's basically half naked 14-15 y. o. girls plus "monster of the week" format. You do the math.

The girls are extremely attractive. One episode in season 1 makes jokes about this when they meet the director of an anime studio who keeps telling his artists to make the exposed thigh more appealing and then sperging and denying he meant "sexy."

If you're going to watch it dubbed then stick with the classic DiC/Cloverway dub. It's just too funny. Plus the new Viz dub they did a few years ago is just so painfully generic. Yeah it's more 'accurate localization' but the voice acting itself is just really really mediocre and they all suffer from samevoice. If you're not looking directly at the mouth flaps it's legitimately difficult to tell who is speaking because most of the girls VAs sound the same. You won't have that problem with the 90's dub, lmao. Or watch the sub, doesn't matter to me.

There's few things more entertaining than 80s/90s slang and dub practices desperately working around the fact that two of the girls are lesbians whenever they're on screen.

In Japan it was probably watched just by girls and otaku, but when it aired here back in the day a lot of boys watched it too, because it was higher quality than the Western action cartoons we were used to.

There's a newer version isn't there? Is the older one a slog compared with the later made one?

      Anonymous

The new one follows the manga closely, the 90's one was full of filler episodes. But the older one was better because the appeal was the girls and the slice of life shit, not the plot.

        Anonymous

So they are different. Is there one that is overall regarded as better taking out nostalgia for the old one or is it down to personal preference? Is there a better entry point in one over the other?

Crystal is almost unanimously regarded as an inferior series to the original anime even if the older one had tons of filler content.

Yeah I don’t know if that’s how the manga is paced or just because they got their episode counts docked but they go through everything really fast.
And then they even lose confidence in themselves and resort to nostalgia pandering by trying to mimic the original anime when the point was to be closer to the manga in both story and art https://youtu.be/lH5-6GTviSY

Season 1 forms a nice tight story and all the major antagonists are directly related to the backstory and the main characters. This was the planned ending, but it proved so popular that they reverted the ending for season 2+ and introduced a long line of new antagonists that didn't have much in common until the time-travel plot gets rolling.

Give it a watch, decide for yourself. I would recommend a more modern sub.

Yeah, they do the best job with the adaptation with the first season.
It’s still a loose adaptation changing things but they kind of continue on with the rest of the series in the monster of the week formula long after it stops making sense.
Infamously structuring the monster of the week format of SuperS around searching random people for a specific thing that the heroes are summoning on the regular to fight them off and never ever really thinking to search them until it’s time for the end of arc drama

I would assume 1>3>2>5>4 is generally how people rank the series of the original anime. It's been a long while since I've watched Supers but I remember being focused far too much on Chibiusa and not particularly good

I'm going to start watching it now. I version I've found has what looks like new looking fansubs because they've put way more effort into it than what cruncyfail appears to.

I recall a thread on here or Cinemaphile a year ago where they said the original version is gone or degraded and it's some typical blu-ray color tinting george lucus shit going on. Anyone remember anything like that?

Do you think there would be any reaction that the original anime changed them from cross dressers to physical gender transformation like Sheik from Zelda and the new series is changing them back to just cross dressers?

      Anonymous

I can't keep up with which is more 'empowering' now. Didn't the DiC dub just make that one villain incredibly gay accidentally as a side effect of the censorship.

        Anonymous

I'm not sure if that's the one you mean, but in the first season two of the villains were gay lovers and they made the twinkier one a girl. Even the Hispanic dub which usually doesn't censor shit pulled that one.

By Sailor Stars they evidentially had enough of all the lesbians so they changed the starlights to be biologically male when they were always female in the manga.

can they really be called cross dressers when they grow actual breasts when in their sailor forms? i would consider it more like a ranma gender transformation. they are men in their regular earth people day to day forms, but full on women when they change into sailor scouts.

It had elements of things in it boys would like. Monster of the week buildup until you got to the final bosses and cool designs for a lot of the characters. And of course, a selection of pretty girls with different looks and different personalities that they could waifu. The story was on-going, so you had something to follow along with every day

I think her intent was literally just "girls wearing pretty dresses" that is all. Theres even some episodes where Sailor Moon literally transforms into a wedding dress.

The creator just liked making magical girls themed comics.

The manga is really girly and frankly, kinda vapid and a brisk pace, but also does have character interaction moments. But there's far less of it than the anime and it's more about pretty visuals and Sailor Moon herself.
The anime was done by men who liked doing cute girls doing cute things and gave it more of an ensemble cast feeling and a serial, laidback feeling. It's more universally appealing overall since even if you aren't much into the plot you can watch for the cast dynamics.

Animu isn't afraid to pander to a specific demographic while American corporate-brained thinking holds you can double your profits if you can make stuff that both men and women like(eg the various new Star Wars projects).

I also feel like if you were a specific age range(younger Gen X to middle Minnenial) that anime exposed you to a lot of stuff that mainstream TV wasn't touching at the time. Sailor Moon for instance had a lesbian couple. Legend of the Galactic Heroes points out how ridiculous Democracy is. Cowboy Bebop killing the hero at the end was mind-blowing at the time, how many American shows go for a bittersweet or sad ending?
