There’s a bit to it than that.
The films were printed on highly flammable celluloid, which became a major major fire hazard over time, and which could break down requiring extensive work to save the films.
The photographic compound on that celluloid is also made from a silver compound, and in large quantities that silver could be abstracted from the old negatives.
Old films were also not seen as profitable in most cases, sort of like old movie costumes and film props, so they got discarded or sold.
Like the original Star Wars light sabers.

Back around 2008 I was super into keeping Venomous animals. I kept Scorpions, Spiders, Tarantula's and Venomous Snakes. I was young and kinda crazy so I started recording myself getting stung by various animals and uploading it old forums for the hobby and eventually youtube. I made about 8 video's in total but in 2016 I made the mistake of joining a minecraft server run by Cinemaphile and I pissed off the wrong guy and he doxed me. He basically tried to ruin my life by calling my place of employment and family members. After that I scrubbed the internet of my old username and all the accounts with it those video's got deleted and I can never recover them. It almost makes me jealous seeing people like Coyote Peterson because I know how much he hams up the reactions and how popular he is but I knew my editing skill, equipment and production value could never match him.
