Why? It's literally the only place where it's valid. It's not like reality where some situations are just unwinnable, the Justice League do actually have a good chance of saving everyone if they try, and they know that.

I mean they also readily accepted prior that yeah they'd have to kill them and only go for the "let's cure as many as possible" thin once they A: had a cure and B: had the means to pull it off realistically. It's not like regular zombie-tardation where people with no hope of a cure with no way to distribute/administer one if they even did have a chance of making one are insisting the zombies need to be kept around. One of DCeased's big selling points was that outside of one or two moments or contrivances for the premise, it largely focused on being a superheroes deal with a zombie apocalypse story rather than a moronic Walking Dead plot with superheroes.

But Spider-Man gets his ass beat all the time. It's the standard Spidey story template: he meets a threat, gets beat up, recovers and thinks about what happened, meets the threat again, wins. Spidey's whole thing is rising up from being beat down.

No, I mean it can continue to affect the character through future printing of that character. It colors them to future writers and authors. It's not fanfiction, it's printed material.

See, the notion of canon is applicable to any fictional media. It has nothing to do with comic books. Ordinary books can be ghostwritten, the developers of video games will change hands, the screenwriters of movies will be swapped out project by project.
The "canon gimmick" is universal. It's called licensing. When we're talking about characters being ruined, we're talking about the license being abused. Not the phantasmal concept of the character in our heads being ruined.

                >and it has nothing to do with comic books.
You fell for the "canon" gimmick so you'll buy the books. It's a marketing scheme to give attention to OOC poor character writing and from bad writers.

                Anonymous

See, the notion of canon is applicable to any fictional media. It has nothing to do with comic books. Ordinary books can be ghostwritten, the developers of video games will change hands, the screenwriters of movies will be swapped out project by project.
The "canon gimmick" is universal. It's called licensing. When we're talking about characters being ruined, we're talking about the license being abused. Not the phantasmal concept of the character in our heads being ruined.
This thread is not about psychic warfare, you absolute schizo.

                Anonymous

I would argue the licensing definition is a little too narrow. Because these characters aren't real, anyone can state anything they want about them. "Canon" is the accepted official channels that have authority over the character. It's like how Disney doesn't own Rapunzel, but we still recognize that they have their own Rapunzel franchise with their own internal-canon to that franchise.

Where anon is wrong is that he assumed that writers are dictation to the canon of comic characters. He's wrong. In the case of Batman for example DC owns that canon, and the writers must work under the guidelines of DC's editorial.

What his point ultimately boils down to then is "if these stories are bad I don't count them as canon," which is a textbook headcanon since that dumb schizo isn't DC, and we should stop wasting time trying to explain something so simple to an actual drooling moron.

They aren't canon. You fell for a marketing gimmick. Hence why you're still being scammed out your money for bad fanfiction from writers who can't get work elsewhere.

How are modern comics any different from fanfics other than them being consumed by far less people? Because some corporate entity says so? The original creators are so far removed from their creations that anything written about them could hardly be considered canon. What happens when everything is eventually in the public domain? What's canon and what's fanfic then?

Hi. Casual observer to this whole shitshow. I don't know who that guy is, but your argument is categorically wrong. Okay, but this whole talk is about the perception of a character belonging to a piece of media. Of course the people that care are going to be the people who consume that type of media. You can argue about the general public all you want (though it would be equally fair to say you can do that for any fandom discussion, which makes the point moot), but that's not what OP made the thread about.

the abysmal Batstory going on is changing the concept of Zur-En-Arrh from a cool idea into absolute moronation.

Morrison had the thing going when Bruce had partitioned off a portion of his psyche to be soley Batman; Bruce wasnt an aspect, it was pure and driven Batman. This was done by Bruce to ensure that if "He" were ever attacked and had his miund broken, the Alt Personality would activate allowing it to work to deal with the problem/attaqck. This was accomplished with isolation tank, pyschodelic drugs and the help of Dr Hurt. Unknow to Bruce, Dr Hurt had programed in a key work to activate the Alt personality- Zur-En-Arrh.
This is outlined in BATMAN: RIP.

the fricking moronic homosexual who is writting the books changed it to Bruce finding a mentor (the black guy) that taught him to do this, instead of the drug-induced trips and thought-experiments. The black guy got mad at Bruce or something, so immediately went and found Joker right after he crawled out of the river (as in the Killing Joke) and taught the Joker how to make these alt personalities too.
of course, being the edge-lord Joker is, he made like a ton of alt personalities, which alters the 3 Joker story line.
Its a colossal frick up and as slap in the face of an incredible concept. Zur-En-Arrh was so casually re-introduced and so poorly though out that now i am anger all over again just thinking about it.

Thanks for dealing with my spelling.

Make canon the fact that he has an in-universe super power of not being able to lose. Not meta, just something part of the character. With all the Batwank that has happened, this would be an interesting evolution.

Alterations to DC's present ripple backward through the past so scientist will see that current truth will coincide with how things have always been. Only characters with a higher sense of awareness will remember that how it always was isn't how it used to be.

      Anonymous

      >no one's posted it yet

The problem is, by the standards of this

No, there are definitely single panels that instantly ruin a character and stick around forever.

, those two don't even come close. Doom is still Doomwanking it around. Cap is still Americaing around. People like to post those panels/pages, but for the actual characters and their stories they basically didn't happen. We went on to business as usual with both.

Hank will ALWAYS get shit on for that backhand. The only way out of it is for it to unmentioned for years, decades maybe, with a consistent, popular stories with him getting people into the character. And with how degenerate comics are, unable to let easy drama go, that'll never happen. It's been too long, they made it his thing.

Now, we kind of can't judge everything by this standard. Dr. Light used to be The Rapist for awhile, but they basically managed to successfully drop that part of him. Same with other characters who looked like they might be ruined but eventually everyone just kind of tacitly agreed to move on. Hanks is the outlier, cause people still can't get over that being his Thing. And even by those standards, neither of the two quoted count. The Doom one is just a meme panel from a meme one shot and never had any impact on the character and the Cap one was the usual event bait that was literally magically removed and then we all moved on, as usual.

Being fair, looking back I think the real reason it wasn't written off like it was for other heroes was because Hank keeps doing other, unrelated but similarly evil or moronic shit over the years that establishes the pattern of behavior that is "Hank Pym is kind of an insecure c**t".

The wife beating thing is just A: something that feels more real to people about that kind of behavior and B: is funny as shit so it ends up basically becoming the go to example that sums up the character. And at this point he's been a wife beater with an inferiority complex longer than he was anything else.

          Anonymous

That's sort of what I'm getting at though. There's a very real feeling that they pull all that stuff with him BECAUSE of the wife beating. "We can keep making him do super villain shit and losing his mind cause he's a deranged wife beater, it just fits." This kind of shit doesn't just keep happening, the character is ruined because of that panel. That's what being ruined means, really. People get mad about dumbshit in comics all the time, but rarely does it fundamentally infect a character in this way.

Again, Hank's pimpslap kind of breaks the scale here. It's kind of hard to think of a character ruined that hard by such a singular thing. Usually stuff eventually gets undone or replaced, but they just can't help themselves with Hank.

Fair enough, I'm not a big Captain America reader. I supposed there's a distinction here: a character can be "ruined" even if, in a vacuum, the character just kind of shrugs it off and the comics kept on going. But the fans are still pissed about it and no longer have the same kind of generosity to the franchise holder as before.

Then there's stuff like Ant-Man/Hank, where the character is fundamentally tainted and the actual stories made by him are basically infected with this cancer that keeps coming back. Completely independent of how the audience itself reacts.

    I don't like the art.
Shit looks worse than a typical low effort web comic.

You can barely see the facial expressions, and it looks super pretentious.

Bro, you should not be calling anyone "mad" when you're throwing tantrums like

Were you born stupid or did something happen to make you this way?
You buy these shitty books. I know you do. And you care because you fell for the canon shitfest scam. No one normal gives a second thought about "canon" from poorly written books because they know it doesn't matter. Only comictards who so emotionally invested in dying fanfiction think it ruined anything.

            .
Everyone is either laughing at your or gave up trying to reach you. You've lost any argument you tried to make and are now babbling like a tard.
I know you're used to people being able to go through your post history on Reddit and want to save face, but nobody can track you here unless you namegay, so there's literally no reason for you to still be here if you're clearly upset.

What kind of projection is this? Are you that pissed over no one reading your dying comicbooks? Sad.

Your comics are dead period. You fell for a scam. Do you sit all night wondering where TDK fits into canon? Because that's people's average view of Batman (you know the audience that matters) not your shit fanfiction.

Okay moron. I'm sure your canon matters so fricking much when this is the Batman that is universally seen as the actual Batman. Not that weird ooc Zur trash.

So you're going to prattle on and on about how canon doesn't matter, it's a scam, it being fake, etc etc, but then unironically defend yourself using terms like "ooc," which is ENTIRELY RELIANT some form of canon? Holy shit, you're not just a clown, you're the entire circus.

No he considers him his only competition for the title of "the Smartest Man on Earth", hence why he was checking if Batman was dead, so that he could say so definitively and unarguably.
