It is, and any time you criticize the prequels in any way they'll autistically bring up Mike as if he was the one who started the backlash. In reality people thought the prequels were decent at best, it's only zoomers and manchild millennials who grew up with the toys and merchandize who think they were regarded as masterpieces upon release.

The prequels vs sequels debate is moronic anyway, it's apples and oranges. They're both terrible in their own ways, but the important thing is I would never sit down and rewatch either one, debating which series is worse is such a waste of time.
Although if I was forced at gunpoint to watch either series again I'd pick the sequels

bottom line is the prequels are better than the sequels, and anyone suggesting disney and the shitty movies and tv shows they produced is somehow an improvement over the george lucas era of lucasfilm, is a fricking homosexual with terrible taste, and is enabling disney to further pump out garbage which is degrading the franchise even more. disney fricking killed the franchise, the directing, writing, music have all consistently been god awful in disney's star wars. all the classic characters have been deconstructed and destroyed, the entire legacy and story of the ot has been destroyed by the sequels, boba fett was suddenly was no longer a badass, now he's randomly a righteous fichter for justice and fairness who relies on an asian woman to be his muscle, obi wan was made into a useless, passive, incompetent twat who failed in the one fricking mission he had by not protecting luke, relying on a trash character like reva to show him mercy. prequels did no where near this kind of damage, the prequels actually had a coherent story, a vision, a through line for the trilogy, characters with flaws and arcs, a quality soundtrack. none of this was in anything disney has made. rlm are fricking morons who thought jj abrams could make great star wars movies.

No, Tatooine was pretty empty prior to the additions. George added crowds in certain scenes but gave it back during establishing shots. Autistics don't understand give and take.

Again, you already had a ton of shots in the original cuts that show off the crowds in Tatooine. As far as "world-building" goes, there's a ton of that especially in the Cantina scene.

                >prequels did no where near this kind of damage
Unironically, the franchise was already destroyed by the prequels when they started making the sequels.
The Force Awakens was so bland and uncreative because it didn't know what Star Wars is anymore, they decided to just copy A New Hope and not touch on anything else. Then TLJ tried to reconcile the two series and that's what totally fricked up the franchise for good.
The whole plotline of Luke turning on the Jedi in TLJ is obviously an idea borrowed from the prequels, it's ironic how people will defend the prequels by saying the Jedi being a moronic bureaucracy was the point and yet get mad when TLJ continues that concept with Luke. Then you have stuff like the entire casino subplot which feels exactly like something you'd find in the prequels.

it's been their feminist dream to remake the OT, just like they are feminizing the MCU. They threw out all of Lucas's scripts and notes and then proceeded to rape the IP, FWIW.

                >Unironically, the franchise was already destroyed by the prequels when they started making the sequels.
It clearly wasn't and that's hysteria from purity-spiraling OT hyperfans.
To directly address your latter points, Darth Vader turning on the Jedi was an idea from the OT and makes absolutely zero sense. The casino scene was only like the Prequels in the superficial sense of showing the wealthy segment of galactic society. It was the exact opposite of them in theme, because the Prequels took a nuanced approach to galactic politics that left morons bored and angry, while TLJ made a lazy twitter-tier commentary on muh rich people muh animals and muh slavery that was insultingly simplistic.

The purists will say the franchise was destroyed by the Prequels, but the fandom, the EU and the merchandise sales stayed healthy during and after the Prequels. This is not the case for the Disney content.
The Prequels were attacked for ruining the character of Darth Vader by showing a shitty origin for him and his downfall, and for ruining Jedi by overexposure and demystification and showing them to be rigid monastics. but the Sequels completely shit on the legacies and achievements of all the OT characters, nor origins or context, outright ruining what they had achieved, ruining the outcome of the OT. The Prequel portrayal of the Jedi, if anything, enhanced Luke's decision to forge a new path in Jedi instead of trying to win by brute force.
The Special Editions had a few jarring instances of primitive CGI pasted over the original scenes and Lucasfilm refused to release the unedited versions... but neither does Disney, and the effects in the new shows and movies suck ass too, outside of maybe Mando.
People like this are homosexuals and their judgement is not to be trusted. Bu this was clear a long time ago, anybody who thinks "The People v. George Lucas" is anything but a display of human dysfunction is a moronic zealot

He made an entire Plinkett video criticizing TLJ though. They didn't need to make one for the RoS because everyone knows the issues with that flick.

                Anonymous

I wish they had made on for RoS, the plinkett reviews aren't meant to be educational videos on how bad the Star Wars movies are, it's about revelling in the disaster. The TLJ review is so much better than TFA because there's so much more shit to make fun of.
But maybe you're right, RoS is such an obvious trainwreck that there isn't so much fun pulling it apart, TLJ at least had some good ideas that are executed terribly and has so much logical inconsistency.

I'm actually shocked that Mike called George Lucas a visionary. In that old HITB about the Lucas documentary he basically said Lucas was a hack who never made anything good.

      Anonymous

His original take on Lucas in the prequel reviews always shit me, I think Lucas truly was a visionary when he made the original Star Wars, he just lost the plot by the time he made the prequels and was too self-absorbed in himself and the going ons of the time (deciding to make a shitty Bush/ Iraq analogy in a series which was originally meant to be a timeless fairy tale/ WW2 story).
He liked to point to some of his dumber ideas like making Han a gilled alien originally but I think it's pretty common for a lot of directors to need a bit of a third perspective in their work, you can see a lot of them tend to get worse later in their careers as they hold greater creative authority in their works and have the power and clout to ignore others as much.
I think Mike has softened on Lucas over time, which is good, he'll sometimes mention in the sequel reviews how Lucas actually did some things better, or quote him from around the 80s when he was doing the OT.

        Anonymous

Lucas is overall pretty smart and has great ideas. If you listen to him talk and what direction he takes it's really good. But he's not a one-man army.
I think if he spent time with a couple of writers and they worked together the prequels could have been just as good as OT

          Anonymous

the issue is lucas can't tolerate any sort of criticism or disagreement.

They’ve actually gone too far this time. Yes I’m an autist. But their dishonestly, their blatant lying, it’s made my blood boil. I genuinely hate them after this. How dare you stare at me and lie. I know where their studio is. It would be like a 5 hour drive but it would be worth it just to see mikes lying little face crumpled and ruined after I fricking best it to a pulp with a baseball bat, fricking begging on his knees pissing himself and admitting that the sequels were a fricking disaster, than JJ sucks, that he was fricking wrong and the whole endeavour has been a soulless hollow piece of shit worse than the prequels. That’s what I want. The little “I’m an apathetic alcoholic!” Act to just fade away under threat of death, under my wrath, and for him to finally be fricking honest for once in his tiny pathetic life. Tears in his eyes as he realises this is what it came to to admit his pathetic online legacy was a farce. I’d fricking beat the frick out of him for everything he did. Im literally in tears writing this the thought is so cathartic. Id just pummel and pummel screaming at him for what he did, for keeping up the fricking lie. And bloodied and broken he’d admit it, he’d admit the prequels were good, he fricking would. I’d lay down in the exhaustion, emotionally drained, we would cry and embrace. The wound would be healed. But he would have to be harmed to the point of destruction fist. And id frick up jay merely for his smug pseudo intellectual manner, his boring insistence on obscure horror shit nobody cares about. I’d wail about how he isn’t interesting, insightful or clever as I smashed his fricking ribs with a hammer, how wrong he had got life, how desperately wrong he has perceived it all in his nihilistic little box. And rich would get possibly the most honest beating, the beating of a man who simply needs to be beaten

    >JAY: They use lightsabers because it was introduced in a cheap sci-fi movie from the 70s
Is he moronic? You'd think that after watching so many old B-movies he would be able to tell difference between cheap movies.
Star Wars budged 11 million, at the time most expensive movie was Cleopatra 31 million
At the moment the most expensive film is Pirates of the Caribean 4 with 378 million budget, so it is like saying any movie with 134 million budget is cheap.
If I'm not mistaken at the time, New Hope was the most expensive sci-fi movie, and was expected to flop hard.

It's hilarious seeing them double down on "prequels bad!!" because Mike fricked up all those years ago. Such a joke that they'd shill for this shit when all three of the prequel movies are infinitely more watchable, enjoyable, and have aged with grace over the years. This show will be forgotten in a month and hopefully RLM will too.

the prequels being arguably better than the sequel trilogy is more due to how shit the latter was though

The popularity of The Clone Wars and other prequel related media contributed sigificantly to the rehabilitation of their components, if not the films themselves.

          Anonymous

that's a fair point, i've only seen a bit of The Clone Wars but they do flesh out the characters somewhat. and the somewhat flat characterisation of the prequels which were character-driven was one of the main issues i had with them.

            Anonymous

I make the point not to disagree with you but just to add another bit of context that is often missed. Well-received supplementary material surrounding the prequels is a big part of why "prequels bad, but they had some good ideas" is a fairly common sentiment these days. And it seems unlikely the sequels will get a similar treatment any time soon.

              Anonymous

without having seen much of clone wars or any other supplementary material, i got the impression this was the case. because it's one thing to watch the prequels and say "these aren't an absolutely irredeemable pile of shit" and quite another thing to say "these are actually good". for the most part i can only imagine people arriving at the latter conclusion if they've been influenced by the supplementary material to fill in the many gaps in character development and plot points in the prequels.

Their hatred of the prequels, right or not, has totally consumed them. All they needed to admit was that NuWars is worse. But because they are so consumed by the seethe they had to lie to themselves and others. That's why everyone is now disgusted by them.

I couldn't care less about what anyone likes or hates, and lets face it the entire Star Wars franchise is fecal matter, but there's nothing worse than liars and shills.
