Ultimately, they are both professionals. They worked together for a long time in spite of the fact they really didn't get along too well. That in itself says a lot for both of them. Honestly I think it added to the show, two completely different approaches to the same problem.

But in the later seasons most of that was dropped and they brought in the other three characters to fill out the show. Jamie was too stoic to carry the show and they needed adams quips but he was too annoying and they had to dilute him with the other build team. Ultimately the formula worked and the show had a great run of over 15 seasons.
