What if you had Harley Quinn and Roxy Rocket in your clutches like caged birds, and you knew there was only one solution for their mania. And you could do it. It would be easy.
Like raping a toothpick
. But the law wouldn't let you.
Wouldn't you feel compelled to take matters into your own hands? Do what the law couldn't, for the good of society?

He fell victim to the same problem as The Elite in "Superman VS The Elite"; the writers were concerned that viewers would agree with the "bad guy(s)", and turned them into a shallow strawman at the last second.

Anonymous

It's a bit different. The Elite wanted to kill anyone who doesn't fit an objective good. Which means anyone starting a war, being in a war, being enlisted in a war. Superman just tried to show that being a bloodthirsty monster isn't what heroes should be, as it inspires people to be just a bloodthirsty, creating chaos. Lyle wanted to punish deserving criminals while The Elite punished anyone who didn’t fit their object sense of right and wrong. It's like if a guy doesn't tip then he deserves jail time. The Elite would agree on him being sentenced while Lyle would rather see him get however much he was supposed to tip taken out of his next paycheck. That being said most every single inmate in Arkham that has ever had an alias deserves either death, life in solitary confinement, or weird and unusual punishment.

Security at Arkham was a joke. Using the compressed timeline of the series, there would have been at least one break out at east week and the average length of time before an inmate broke out would have been a month.

It's weird. The only movie that ever addresses trying to fix Gotham's actual issues is the fucking Lego Batman movie. The reason why people make fun of Batman nowadays is because he has no actual solution for his villain problem.

He saw the joke of the criminal justice system. A revolving door that rapists and murderers go in and out of like it's their own personal carousel. The trush is harsh, lasting consequences that are loud and send a message to the masses are the only way to deter criminal activity long term.

I feel like it would be easy for any competent writer to have Batman finally solve the criminal problem in Gotham once and for all. The problem is that it would mean the franchise would end. If Batman ends, so does everyone's paychecks. Batman is like Spiderman where the writers must write him suffering eternally in order to keep making more stories for more money.

>also ignoring how he was more personally upset at not being able to torture inmates instead of doing his fucking job of restraining them properly
>also ignoring that he was more willing to kidnap actual authority figures out of spite rather than having some legitimate reason
>now that he's locked up (heh) and fucking with inmates on a more personal level he's probably contributing even more to why they want to break out

And even then as Lock-Up he just kidnaps Gordon and other authority figures because he was butthurt, if he actually cared he would've kept a low profile and hunted down criminals

Wasn't Scarecrow crying so much about not being taken back to Arkham that Robin was taken aback by it? Shouldn't that be every villain's reaction to being taken in? Shit, isn't that how every person should look at the prospect of being imprisoned?

It was less of a problem back when BTAS came out, but nowadays if you want to make fun of someone you don't like in your comic/cartoon/movie/whatever, you make absolutely sure to first have them outright state your opposition's opinions and thoughts, THEN have them go off the deep end at some point, just to make sure that:
1. It paints "THEM" as ubervillaindemonmonsters that are unquestionably evil in the long run, with no room for any "and"s or "but"s.
2. "THEY" can't point at individual things that the character did that were reasonable, regardless of how reasonable it might be, because then your fans will point at Villain McBadFace later in the run and go "yeah, but look at what he did? You want to side with THIS guy?"

Like, sure, Villania Evillpus stopped a drag queen reading event for kids and went on a monologue about how "men shouldn't dress as women as that's going against all that women stand for", but then it turned out she only did that so she can harvest the Diamond of Purity from one of the drag queens so she can travel all around the timeline, where she wreaks havoc, stitches and mutates Trump and Jesus into a Human Centipede and then uses them to attack modern day Israel while siding with Hitler and the Muslims, who have all turned into a horde of demons, their true forms.

Lyle's problem is that he's a prison guard in an asylum. and Arkham's problem is that it mixes remorseless criminals such as Poison Ivy or Scarecrow in with those who are suffering and need help like the Ventriloquist, Two-Face, or Maxie Zeus.
The snag is that Lyle doesn't see any difference between the two and treats both just as harshly. His response is sometimes appropriate and sometimes it isn't, but either way it's for the wrong reasons. He's not interested in keeping the peace, he's just mad with power.
This extends to his actions outside of the asylum as well. Even if you agree with what he says, there's this undercurrent that he's not acting on ideology. It's a pretense to settle personal grudges.
Batman isn't against tough-on-crime policies. When he says he was born to fight Lyle's brand of justice, it's not about being strict. He's fighting the brand of justice that's really a cover for, let's face it, domestic terrorism.
Lyle isn't entirely wrong, and there's potential for a more nuanced story there. But not being entirely wrong doesn't mean you're right.

I'm gonna say it, torture can be morally justified depending on the crime. I'm so tired of this cucked morality where heroes are supposed to get the shit beaten out of them and mocked and taunted by the villain, but aren't allowed to act out their own anger or are supposed to be perfect robots who don't even experience anger. No wonder people think villains are cooler when they place such harsh restrictions on what the heroes are allowed to be. You're not gonna become a terrible person just from torturing an unrepentant murderer. They deserve it and it's a good way to vent your frustration. I wish more storylines included such a theme, but we can't have that because muh slippery slope.
