Nothing else frpm that year captured that "Joie de Vivre" as much as typing "WE GOT A LIVE ONE BOYS", especially after all the Black worshipping of the year before because a feral recidivist overdosed and died while being apprehended.
At first this site used "lol" and "rofl" and "XD" as did anyone in early web 2.0, but then went through a hipster phase where normies bad, so it had to come up with something different that teenage girls weren't sending in their SMS, so it got deformed into lul and lulz.
Lulz got overused all over the internet, then the youtube comment section caught on, 1&2, etc, so it got deformed into "lel". After it turned into lel people realized that they were subconsciously deforming it to distance themselves from the normals so trying to deform it further became a meme on its own and a bunch of forced variations appeared: lyl, lil, lal, wew, and then kek. "Kek" caught on because Cinemaphile began using it after it was settled in a couple of threads trying to find a replacement to lel, because it was most related to video games as it was the orcish "lol" in WoW.
Because Cinemaphile at its peak, in 2014, began using it en masse, everyone else began using it through osmosis, and "kek" became the dominant variant on Cinemaphile. This image , with a shopped "TOP LEL", was popular on Cinemaphile and Cinemaphile, which is where lel was the dominant variant, and then morphed into "TOP WEW" and "wew lad", but as kek pushed either of these away, people shopped it into "TOP KEK".
Then someone posted a turkish pastry that was literally called "topkek" and people for some reason found that funny and like a first manifestation of what would later be called meme magic, so it caught on and everyone began using it. Speaking of meme magic, 2016 would see /misc/ invaded by redditors in a quantity never seen before, either underages or straight up boomers, and these redditors, in their confusion and inability to grasp the culture of this website, began spamming it even more, and then someone posted the Egyptian Kek, so redditors blended both of these into the ultimate redditized mutted neo-culture: "KEK IS HERE MEME MAGIC IS REAL PRAISE KEKISTAN", which then became completely unironic
They started using kek as version of lol most likely because of WoW where kek was the horde version of bur, which players would often repeat when alliance players said bur, which was just their common speak version of lol.
I fondly remember the first day buck breaking exploded on Cinemaphile and nearly every thread on the catalogue was a variant of it. It was hilarious, but, more importantly, it felt organic and unforced, very much unlike -ackposting, even though it does give me a chuckle.
>kek >2016
holy newbies in this thread. kek was popularized on Cinemaphile by [s4s] in 2013 (it was older than that). are you telling me i'm the only homosexual who was here 9 years ago?

Yo that do be bussin tho, fr fr no cap
Kek is far far older than 2016.
Not that kek
2016 was the start of the Egyptian god kek magic shit, but kek goes way back, possibly 2005 if the WoW influence was truly what started it.
Election tourist here -- was "kek" an actual word filter or was it just adopted by the community from the WoW horde-alliance filter?
Kek was what happened when a horde player said bur, which is what alliance players say when they say lol.
It's actually from twitch. People here just forgot to add the W. It's from KEKW
I don't use twitch because I'm not a homosexual, so I don't know what that means.
it was posted in reference to the wow filter until the egyptian god thing got memed and it became a whole other thing
kek is what zerg rushing koreans said on starcraft.
