Are you even a physicist? Who's to say a magnetic particle field couldn't be used as a shield if you had superconductors and enough energy?

      >Also force fields are a stupid plot device.
What else are you gonna do? If they didn't then the issue would be resolved with sufficient force resulting in humanity being able to put up some fight instead of the situation being presented as hopeless. Yes, Thunder Child is a worse addition to the story since it just means that humanity just needed more of them to survive

      the force Fields were necessary.
HG wells said within 10-20yrs Earths technology would overpower the Martins tri-pods with ease.
and that was written in the 1890s
without the fields, yr 2000+ military would absolutely curbStomp the aliens.

The aliens can travel in lightning bolts but they couldn't win even without shields? They could build much smaller tripods and make them much more agile, while keeping a heat gun. Their aircrafts would be much superior too.
Humans are weak against any alien race that's able to visit us.

It was inspired by Australians/Bongs going into Tasmania and eradicating the native population
Western society was considered highly advanced at the time but dudes were still dropping like flies from Malaria and yellow fever and the like, Wells probably thought it'd be a nice analogy if the aliens did the same

Those ships were buried for thousands of years. It could be possible that the virus or whatever that killed them didn't evolve when they surveyed the planet for invasion. Still a stupid mistake, but a little less stupid.

Reminds me of a story an anon once shared where he recounted a time where he watched Mars Attacks with a group of friends as children. One of them got afraid and ran to hide in the bathroom. Anon’s dad then rattled the doorknob going ACK ACK ACK to mess with him. Fricking funny.

Anyone who was born before 1990 is aware of War of the Worlds being a radio show disguised as a news broadcast that freaked the frick out of everyone, so everyone knows that the aliens were killed by the common cold...
But being a movie, there's absolutely NO indication of this. Not one scene where someone sneezes on an alien and it immediately short circuits and falls over dead.
Granted that might be too obvious, but I swear it literally ends with a caption saying "the common cold killed them all lol"
But am I the only person who thinks that's a fricking terrible way to end a movie? It's literally all tell and no show...

      Anonymous

iirc I haven't read the book or listened to the radio show since I was a kid, but I'm pretty sure that's how it ends too. The narrator telling the audience what happened.

        sage

I'm 99% sure this is how the book ends.
You need to change shit like that for a movie adaptation. It works in a novel, but not in film.

          >Anyone who was born before 1990
No, even after. Thanks to cultural osmosis, WotW is better known nowadays from the radio broadcast and the ensuing panic rather than the original novel. Everyone also knows it just as "invading aliens are killed by bacteria", nothing more, nothing less.

So is it good because it replicates the radio show?
Is it because the radio broadcast was so iconic that it simply gets a pass for doing that?
For being a movie, it's a piss poor way of conveying story.
They legitimately made a movie and finished filming, realized they forgot to throw in a scene showing that the common cold is responsible for killing the aliens, so they just tacked a post-it note before the end credits.

          HOW IS THAT ACCEPTABLE FILM-MAKING?

The worst part is, I try to explain to anybody, they all shrug and go "yeah, it's like the radio play"

BUT THAT'S NOT HOW MOVIES WORK. OR SHOULD.

I honestly felt like I was living in a cuckoo clock.

Second half of this movie where him and Dakota are in the creeps basement sucks. The camera crew should have followed the son over the hill and stuck with his military adventure.

That movie was so bad. It was watching it that I realized Spielberg had lost whatever magic he once had as a director, at least when it comes to sci-fi movies where he can rely on CGI all day without worrying about plot and characters.

Nothing electrical works...except when it does.

Aliens buried underground for millions of years. No one ever finds one mining or after an earthquake or landslide or just in the side of a hill that has eroded away.

Plus why would the aliens bury themselves for millions of years in the first place? They could have taken over Earth long before now and wouldn't have lost to humans, even if they did have to deal with germs.

Never invented the wheel? We're talking about a species with advanced engineering and manufacturing, not fricking Africans and Indians (feathers, not dots).

NYC is destroyed, there's a running battle up the eastern seaboard but Boston looks like they were mildly inconvenienced by the power going out.

Cruise's idiot son running off to watch the battle because of his daddy issues, but it all works out in the end because he managed to get to his mom's before Dad and they yelling machine do.

      >Aliens buried underground for millions of years
This is a rumor tho. It's something some random moron says. It's not something that is discovered or is a plot point.
The aliens could have just teleported or some shit.
      Also this
      >NYC is destroyed, there's a running battle up the eastern seaboard but Boston looks like they were mildly inconvenienced by the power going out.
It's a stupid complaint. Not every settlement was focused at once.
